Slides for bad knees

Hi, this is my first post here. Looking for slides that don’t have too much cushion, and also not a rubber footbed. I see the Oofos/Adidas Foams etc recommended most places, but I need less cushion/more support/stability.
I currently wear NB-1540’s and they’re so far the best tennis shoe I’ve worn since my knees wore out-( 1 recently replaced, other in the future). If it helps, last shoes were Hoka Gaviota and had way too much heel compression/squish, and zero support.
Prefer leather/natural footbed (Birks) but not really wanting Birks.
Amy help would be greatly appreciated. Tia
Btw, cushion is ok, just cannot feel like I’m sinking 1–1.5” thru the shoe like the Hokas did.

Waterproof walking boots recommendations for a big guy

Hi everyone

I was hoping someone in here may be able to help me with some recommendations. Until recently, I wore walking boots a lot as that's all I had that would support me and not break easily. However, after buying a pair of FitVille walking trainers (on the back of recommendations I saw being made to others), I no longer use those walking boots daily.

I took the walking boots to have the hooks replaced but both cobblers in my town advised the hook types are specialist and they don't have the tools to do it. One of them, part of a larger company, advised even their central stores and repair shop don't have them. There is only only specialist in the northeast of England that may have these and they're a train and a bus away.

Anyway, so I'm now in the game for some new walking boots. I have time to save a little for these and don't really need them until late this year or early next. What I need is a pair good for wide feet, that are heavy duty, easily repairable, and are waterproof, in case the festival I go to every May is wet next year. I also want them to be ankle high.

I'm a size 14 with a bit of a wide instep and toe box (I don't know the exact figures as I've never had these bits measured and can't right now as my legs and feet are bandaged up, yay!)

Tldr: wide foot, UK size 14, seeks repairable and hard wearing waterproof walking boots that go to my ankle for long walks playing Pokémon Go and enjoying music together.

Yes, that was meant to sound the way it did.

Altra Recommendations

Hi, new to the sub and have seen quite a few recommendations for Altra shoes. I am looking at trying them out and as I normally wear 10 4e I am wondering how I should order from there site. I wish I could try them on somewhere as I can't just curious how I should order both in normal and their wide model.

Thanks

Review: Sai Otsukare

After a full week of use I thought I’d offer a review of this shoe. It first came to my attention on Reddit and I was intrigued to find these unorthodox, super-wide shoes, and decided to look into it. Although the website(saifootwear.co.jp) is in Japanese I was able to pretty easily navigate it with my browser’s built-in translation tool and Google Translate. The site offers one style of shoe in either black or white. I’d describe the shoe as a casual sneaker rather than an athletic sneaker and, stylistically, in the same ballpark as Allbirds.

The key feature of this shoe is the super generous toe box. Unlike the majority of brands, the Sai not only accommodates the big toe, but also remembers the pinkie! In the accompanying pics you can see that the toe box is very wide, spreads on both sides of each foot, and accommodates high volume feet. I have high arched, high volume feet and I found these shoes to be extremely comfortable with absolutely no rubbing or pinching.

The construction, materials and finishing are top notch. These are not light, flimsy shoes and I anticipate they will hold up well for regular use. The uppers are nylon weave and, while breathable, are not ‘open’ or see-through. The soles are zero drop, which I find perfect but people who need to insert an orthotic insole are unlikely to have a problem doing so due to the high volume of the shoe. The soles are very much for urban wear rather than trails as they don’t have heavy duty tread. That said, they are fine for walking around town in rain without any slipping.

I’d like to point out one feature: the tongue. Many shoes skimp on the tongue. No such issue with the Otsukare. The tongue is both wide enough and padded - I appreciate that.

In terms of sizing, the website uses the Japanese scale, which is based on the length of the foot in centimetres. But a few seconds on Google found conversion charts that allowed me to check the fitting against the US and EU shoes I already own. Don’t size down as the length of the shoe is true - and the length measures the insole not the outer sole. A couple of other measurements may be helpful. I’m short and fit US9/EU42/JP27; the insoles of my Sai are approx 120mm/4.7” at the widest part of the toe box. The soles are 18mm/0.71” thick without the cork insole, and 22mm/0.87” thick with the insole.

Even using translation tools, ordering was pretty easy, and the shoes arrived in New Zealand from Japan in 10 days - which is better than most deliveries to us here at the end of the world!

Finally, cost. Sai shoes are very competitively priced. When I converted ¥8000 and discovered it is approximately US$50 / NZ$87 I was astonished. Even with postage from Japan the total cost is significantly better than I’m used to when buying online. The spare cork insoles and the cotton tote bag (with zip) that the shoes are packaged in were delightful bonuses to the already excellent value.

And on top of that I received fantastic customer service including an email to ensure I had selected the correct size before the shoes were dispatched!

In summary, I recommend these well made, comfortable and roomy shoes. And just to be clear, this is not sponsored and I paid for the shoes myself.

Question about Topo shoes

I see Topos recommended here often. I thought I would try a pair - seems like the brand itself lends itself to a wide toe box, but no arch support?

I need a little support, not a lot, but some - so would they not work for me?

Thanks

Shoe Recommendation Help

I am looking to upgrade from my New Balance 608v5 trainers. I love the physical dimensions and underfoot geometry of the 608v5, but I need something lighter and more breathable (no heavy leather).

I tried HOKA Bondi 9, and my knees are in pain. My feet wobble trying to find stability using Hoka Bondi 9.

Here are my exact requirements:

  • Size/Fit: 4E Extra Wide. I need a wide toe box and high overall instep/midfoot volume.
  • Heel Stack Height: Around 31mm to 33mm.
  • Heel-to-Toe Drop: Right around 10mm
  • Cushioning: Firm, stable, or responsive. I want a supportive feel underfoot, not a super mushy, max-plush, or ultra-squishy foam that sinks in.
  • Weight: Lightweight (breathable engineered mesh/knit style uppers).

I appreciate any recommendations.

[REQ/VENT] Wide fit isn't wide enough... help?

I'm really struggling to find shoes that fit me. At this point I've accepted that they probably won't be pretty because I'm apparently gargantuan, but I'd just love a pair that don't hurt while I'm wearing them and won't wait until I take them off before they start hurting.

So far I've tried:

Men's Nike (regular)

Men's New Balance (4E wide)

Men's Skechers (extra wide)

Women's Hoka (wide fit)

I got the Hokas today and was so excited because I'd seen them recommended so much in this sub. They were actually pretty too, which feels like a miracle for wide-fit shoes.

Lo and behold... they were still ridiculously narrow.

One pair was the Transporter 2s, and my feet looked like hooves. I was bursting out through the laces. I never even thought I had particularly high-volume feet, but I guess I have a new foot related complex now.

I'm honestly at a loss for how to find shoes now. I can't trust websites that say "wide fit" because every brand seems to have a completely different idea of what "wide" means, and I can't seem to find anyone on this sub whose feet are wide in the same way as mine.

Does anyone have recommendations for shoes that are actually wide? Bonus if they're available for women, but at this point I'll wear whatever doesn't make my feet feel like they're being shrink-wrapped.

Also... how is there not one universally agreed-upon "actually wide" shoe brand? Surely I can't be the only person out here built like a Hobbit.

Any advice for other really fat guys who might have found a shoe that actually fits them and helps?

I'm like 550 pounds and have insanely swollen wide feet and legs. For the life of me, I can't find a shoe that actually fits right. I need something that opens up on the top/front and back if possible, or at the very least the top with no strings to tie or anything. I recently went to a foot doctor, but of course, the $150 shoes he ordered from some catalog doesn't fit.

Now he wants me to wait two weeks for another appointment with him to try and figure out re ordering shoes. I don't know if I want to wait that long and am trying to look online for something myself again. Problem is the last 5 shoes I've ordered from online don't fit me, either too big or too small or I can't get them on my feet. They did x-rays and said I have a heel spur, plantar fasciitis, and heel pad atrophy, so some kind of shoe that also focuses on heel pain relief and support.

I'm desperate for any help. They need to preferably be 10.5 wide men's black for work too. Thanks in advance

Wide shoe for ultra

I’m thinking about my first trail ultra (66km with 1600m ish elevation) and I need help to find a suitable trail shoes.
My feet are annoyingly shaped due to being very wide everywhere except the heel I quite normal. I tried Altra experience wild 3+ which was ok from the toe box but too narrow from the midfoot.

My biggest issue is that all shoes tend to be too narrow from the midfoot and all wide shoes Altra for example seems to be wide only in the toe box. I use Nb 1080v15 4E in road running which still isn’t perfect fit, but the midsole is forgiving because it’s very soft. It’s still bit too narrow.

I walk 90% of the time with barefoot shoes but I have never run in 0 drop shoes so I’m bit scared to try anything 0 drop.

Any suggestions?

Wide Hot Feet - Sandal / Slide Recs.

I’ve got very wide flat feet and have all my life, never had an arch and have feet shaped like bricks. My feet thankfully don’t cause me any pain, apart from trying to find shoes.

My feet are 30cm long and 12cm wide at the toebox AND 12cm wide midfoot.

On top of that my feet run hot, I’ve tried on Crocs and similar moulded clogs but they make my feet hot and sweaty even with lightweight merino wool socks. My daily drivers are Brooks Beast Size 13(UK) 4E.

My feet are too wide for Birkenstocks and the spill out over Teva Universal.

Any recommendations for a sandal or slide that’d fit my feet would be great appreciated.

Hiking Boots Men's Size 6 US Wide EE Recommendations?

Finding width EE hiking/backpacking boots in men's size 6 is notoriously hard to find. All the well regarded boots either don't offer sizes below 7 or don't offer wide widths below size 7. Women's boots are no good either since a wide women's is equivalent to a normal men's width D. I'd like good quality boots, but can't find any that accommodate my size/width. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Should I downsize Tevas?

I got pretty wide feet so usually wear 43 or 44 with other shoes. Width EE.

So got size EU 43/US 10, despite my feet being almost 27 cm. I like the look of Teva's tho

Hoka Gaviota 6 - Re-engineered is a win.

Quick impression of Hoka's reengineered Gaviota 6:

I've always liked the rolling transition in Hoka's but they've never offered shoes that fit me well or handled slight overpronation. Last Gaviota I tried was 3-4 years ago, too narrow and too much fabric/pieces/parts...just felt kludgy. Gemini Pro said that I should try them again because they'd been reengineered and whew man, have they.

I've just done comparison across Saucony, ASICS, Skechers and these new Hokas are the winner.

Gaviota 6:
Best toe box room: I can wiggle my toes.
Lacing: Fantastic feel, no lace bite or doming, its like a cloud on top.
Great Shape: Finally shoes that don't feel like I've strapped Kayaks to my feet (looking at you ASICS GT 14 series)
Rolling Motion: Finally get to see what all the hype is about, feels good around the house during break in.

Looking forward to putting 2-300 miles on these in the next 6 months.

I'm coming from last 3 pair were GT-2000s v12, they clomped more than I'd like until they broke in but were generally ok. I don't know what ASICs was thinking with their new v14, they just feel weird.

My journey so far.

Over the last 18-24 months I’ve decided to go on a full on boot journey to try to find something that actually works with my feet. Spoiler alert: I’m still looking.

I wanted to dedicate legitimate time to each boot to see how it would actually do with my feet. For context, my foot is:

10.8” long
4.75” straight across the ball
5” diagonal from base of the big toe to base of the little toe. (11.5” around)

11.5” around the instep/ arch area

15.5” around the heel wrapping up around the top of the foot where it meets my leg.

Pes cavus feet, hammer toes, tailor’s bunion, high rigid arch.
Footwear I’ve tried:

Keen Cincinnati carbon toe (13 wide (they were like $50 cheaper and I couldn’t pass up the savings for only being slightly too big)
I ended up in these most of the time because the soft outsole. Carbon toe rubbed my big toe quite a bit.

Keen Gibson carbon toe 11.5 wide spent a decent amount of time in these, comfortable outsole, but on the narrow side. Carbon toe rubbed my big toe.

Hoss Stomp aluminum toe 11.5 4E
These are my #2 most used after the Cincinnati. They fit pretty well, being 4E width and more anatomically shaped. Aluminum toe still rubs my big toe. Feet feel fatigued after 8 hours in these

Thorogood Genesis nano carbon toe 11.5 2E
I had high hopes for these, they’re built on a more anatomical last, but definitely not suitable for extra wide feet. I actually use these for hiking just as much as working. All of the squish in these comes from the insole (which I think is fantastic). The outsole seems to be very hard. If they could figure out how to actually make a true extra wide boot, these would be fantastic. Can’t feel the safety toe at all

Thorogood heritage round steel toe 12 3E
These were my Father’s Day present last year. I really love an 8” unlined boot and these have potential to be great. If they would just broaden the toe box a little I could make these work just fine. I love the insole, My feet don’t feel fatigued at the end of the day, But boy am I ready to get them off and actually splay my toes. I can’t feel the steel toe at all in these, which I love. I’ve spent a decent amount of time in these.

And finally my Lems waterproof Chelsea. Size 12. The only insole that comes close to actually being shaped like my foot.

I didn’t spend a specific amount of time in each boot, most days I would switch at lunch when my foot pain was too much and I needed something to rub my feet somewhere new.

I’ll try to include pictures of the boots, as well as pictures of their insoles over a tracing of my foot to show width comparisons.

Hopefully this can help someone in their footwear journey.

Looking for all-white leather walking sneakers for very wide feet (available in Germany)

Hi everyone,

I've been lurking on this sub for a while and have learned a lot, so I was hoping to get some recommendations.

I have a wide feet and need an all-white leather sneaker that I can wear every day. Comfort is my top priority because I typically walk around 15,000 steps a day and spend most of the day standing at work.

For reference: I usually wear Skechers Extra Wide (4E), EU 41.5 or Brooks 2E, EU 43

After reading many posts here, I had pretty much settled on:

-New Balance 928v3

-New Balance 577v1

-Brooks Addiction Walker 2

^^^ this should give you an idea on what type of style I am looking for.

Unfortunately, none of these seem to be available here in Germany, or they're impossible to find in my size.

My budget is €100–150 max.

Does anyone have recommendations for similar shoes that:

- Come in all white

- Have a leather upper

- Are suitable for very wide feet

- Are comfortable for 15k+ steps/day and standing all day

- Are available in Germany or elsewhere in Europe

Thanks in advance!

Edit: fixed the spacing between the lines.

Wide or Xtra wide recs for UK trip with great slip resistance

I wear a womens 9XW/mens 8W/XE and will probably size up for thick wool socks and swelling. Headed to Scottish Highlands/Edinburgh/London so will likely encounter rain and slippery cobblestone streets. My biggest concern is comfort and not wiping out on slick ground. I live in Florida so will be ordering online since stores carry very little in this category. I can research all day but need some real life input especially regarding the slippery experiences. I do have very sensitive feet so not confident in the comfort of the more rigid styles offered by Keen and Merrell, I will try them again but in the past they have felt too molded and hard on my soles.

Anyone tried the Jim Green AnatomX rangers?

Hi all -

Just wondering if any of you have tried these boots and if they worked for you.

In my case, for reference, I’ve only had true fit success with WYDE brand shoes, as I have toes that are 12cm across and my foot is fan shaped (a nightmare for shoe shopping)

Thanks!
