PSA: don't factory reset during/after jailbreak

From what I've read in this sub, basically factory reset doesn't actually factory reset. It doesn't fully remove the jailbreak, so things might be left in a weird in between state. For example, having the update blocker still on (which is the default for newer jailbreaks) after a "factory reset" and a Kindle that requires checking for updates during setup can cause issues for example.

I see too many people foot gunning themselves:

Fix common manga/comic Humble Bundle PDF conversion problems like margins, slow page turns, and faded blacks. Optimize for your Kindle, Kobo, ReMarkable and other eink ereader devices using KCC

One of the KCC's main features is converting Humble Bundle manga PDFs to native formats for Kindle, Kobo, ReMarkable, and other eink ereader devices for maximum image quality and significantly smaller file size.

The app solves many common problems of using the files directly provided by Humble Bundle like removing margins for smaller screens, better handling of 2 page spreads, fixing gray artwork to be black on eink, and much faster page turn performance.

The app runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux. The app has a Windows code sign. The app has been in continuous development since 2012 and has nearly 500K total downloads.

Fix Kindle manga common mistakes like extra margins, rainbows, gray art, spread handling with KCC

You can use an app like Kindle Comic Converter (KCC) to fix side loaded manga problems like extra margins, rainbows, gray art, and spread handling.

This gives far better results than converting with Calibre.

The native Kindle mobi manga viewer in the latest kindle firmware unfortunately still lacks the virtual panel/4 corner zoom feature removed in 5.19.2. And the full refresh feature was removed in 5.19.3. (Full refresh was also removed for normal AZW3 books in 5.19.3)

If you mod your Kindle to use Koreader to bypass this issue, you can additionally unlock more features like the ability to use better image formats that enable better image quality at half the file size and twice as fast file conversions.

The best source for manga is Humble Bundle, which usually provides print quality PDF files.

Humble Bundle manga PDFs look incredible on my Kindle Scribe running Koreader!

Manga: The Boy I Loved Became the Jade Emperor

Using Humble Bundle manga PDFs converted to CBZ PNG with Kindle Comic Converter. The Kindle Scribe is a 10" device at 1860x2480 300 PPI. (I am the kcc dev)

The image quality is incredible and the file size is way smaller than the original PDF. Page turn performance is great.

Kindle 5.19.6 jailbreak released, why you should jailbreak, and Koreader manga is amazing to read CBZ natively

DO NOT FACTORY RESET during/after jailbreak. It will cause problems if you don't do extra steps beforehand. Ask for help if you are thinking about it.

Avoiding buggy firmware updates and feature removal is the biggest reason to jailbreak

To be completely clear, some of these bugs were fixed in later firmwares, but not all of them, and you may have had to be waiting months for the fixes.

Disabling updates is commonly done as part of the jailbreak process.

DO NOT FACTORY RESET without re-enabling updates or you may have serious problems.

Part 2: More Koreader tips for manga!

* activate bottom menu with a swipe up, not a tap to avoid accidental activations (requires restart of Koreader)

* overlap and lock bottom status progress bar to avoid accidental activations

* disable UI flashes

* sleep screen customizations (show last page read/book cover/book stats/overall koreader stats)

* disable frontlight bottom-left corner tap shortcut to avoid accidental activation of frontlight

* landscape fit to width reading for single pages of manga:

Yes, I accidentally activate a lot of things...

I also use the top/bottom page turn direction so tapping anywhere on the bottom advances forward.

A video of me starting from a clean Koreader install going through every menu changing settings to make CBZ manga look as good as possible.

  • Fit: full not width
  • view mode: page not continuous
  • page crop: none not auto if you used KCC to target the exact resolution already
  • adjustable contrast
  • tap bottom bar to make it fullscreen
  • bottom left corner activates frontlight
  • bottom right activates progress bar, deactivate for fullscreen
  • diagonal short swipe to refresh page
  • hold panel to zoom in
  • change full refresh frequency from every 6 pages to whatever you want even never
  • change page turn tap zones for right to left content
  • tap opposite corners to screenshot
  • hold a setting to set it as the default
  • hold exit button to exit koreader for kindle since you can't usb inside koreader
  • dither: off if you used KCC to dither already
  • set a custom sleep screen

Koreader manga Kindle Comic Converter tips!

A lot of koreader users use KCC to preprocess their CBZ files for huge file size optimizations: https://www.reddit.com/r/koreader/comments/1tsarw7/why_some_koreader_users_still_use_kcc_to_optimize/

So here are some more tips:

View mode: page instead of continuous so you see one page at a time. This should really be the default.

Page crop: none instead of auto. KCC already targets your exact device resolution so additional resizing or cropping can introduce blur. Cropping can also be done in KCC, whether it's the normal side margins or the margins between panels or page numbers.

dithering: off. KCC already dithers when you select PNG or lossless WebP options, there's no need to do it twice. This probably saves some battery.

Koreader tips for manga with Kindle Comic Converter

View mode: page instead of continuous so you see one page at a time.

Page crop: none instead of auto, crop in kcc because additional resizing after KCC output will blur since it was already targeted to your exact device resolution.

dithering: off, dither in kcc by using png option to save battery.

Kindle 5.19.5: Amazon brought back a feature from all the way back from 5.18.5, but virtual panels, full refresh, and %read are still broken in mobi/azw3 mangas

Open Dictionary is back after being removed in 5.18.6

Moral: Amazon is willing to restore features they removed as far back as 5.18.6
Filing official complaints via Kindle settings Help Contact Us Email seems to be working.

No side loaded mobi/azw3 manga fixes
Virtual panel option has been removed from the Aa layout menu (first page) since 5.19.2 for mobi/azw3 mangas
Virtual panel used to become an option if the book doesn’t have explicitly defined Region Magnification metadata for every panel
% read tracker works but doesn’t reach the final “read” state after 100%
Full refresh doesn’t work either

Kindle firmware 5.19.5 is out

As always, update at your own risk. I will update the post with the release notes when they are updated.

--------
Version 5.19.5 – June 2026

Here's what's new:

Story So Far: You can now easily return to books you love without backtracking through chapters by accessing spoiler-free recaps up to where you’ve read. Story So Far is available for thousands of best-selling English language Kindle books you have purchased or borrowed.

Moving sticky notes: Move any sticky note by tapping and holding the icon with your finger, then dragging it around on the page. Or, select the "Move note" action in the 3-dot menu in the sticky note dialog or side panel note.

Structured outlines: You can now draw circles that automatically snap to neatened annotations in eBooks with enhanced typesetting and Word documents.

Bookmarks in Page Flip View: In addition to tapping in the top right corner while reading, you can now create bookmarks by tapping on the bookmark icon in the page thumbnail, in Page Flip View.

Performance improvements, bug fixes, and other general enhancements.

--------

My hopes (quote from email I sent to amazon via Kindle settings > help > contact us > email):

And please fix the relevant bugs with Japanese/German dictionaries, and the battery drain bug caused infinite request retries to *.minerva.devices.a2z.com if a user has a custom DNS set up since that's on a common default blocklist. And the various AZW3 bugs like missing virtual panel in mangas, slightly broken %read tracker, and broken full refresh. I think page turn animation is also broken too for azw3.

I also really miss the Open Dictionary option and the older dedicated bookmarks bar.

And please port some of the fixes to kindles still stuck on 5.19.2 or allow a downgrade.

Kindle Previewer and Kindle Create will stop working in macOS 28 after Rosetta is removed

Unless Amazon releases Apple silicon native versions of the apps. They've had since 2020 to do it and they still haven't.

If you use those apps, maybe consider using the Feedback form directly in the apps. Native versions of the apps would probably run twice as fast.

Or emailing Amazon directly via Kindle settings > Help > Contact Us > email. For US users this takes you to amazon.com/kindle-help

macOS 27 will be the final macOS with Rosetta for Intel apps so you might want to stay on that version as long as possible.

You can get big file size savings by downscaling high res images in illustration heavy EPUBs in KCC

KCC 10.3.0 has a new feature: light novel support!

Light novels and other illustration heavy EPUBs sold from distributors like Humble Bundle and Fanatical often include extremely high quality and high resolution images in EPUBs they sell. In this example, the EPUBs are up to 40 MB each.

By just downscaling to the screen resolution of the Kindle Paperwhite 12th Gen in this example, file sizes can be reduced to as low as 4 MB, so you can fit a lot more of them on your device!

You can also optionally change the JPEG quality factor or force grayscale conversion using the options. All the other option checkboxes are ignored since those are only for fixed layout comics/mangas instead of normal reflowable epub books. The new light novel mode preserves the original file's file structure.

Light novel support, epub input, and more in Kindle Comic Converter 10.3.0

Also, don't forget to complain to Amazon for any current firmware bugs you have like missing virtual panel mode, full refresh, % read bugs!

Kindle settings > Help > contact us > email.

For US users this takes you to https://www.amazon.com/kindle-help

Also, consider complaining that Kindle Previewer and Kindle Create and kindlegen are intel apps and will stop working in macOS 28. Amazon needs to make native Apple silicon versions.

  • EPUB input support and various related bug fixes like fusion
  • macOS 27 optimizations
  • add 1 page centered landscape option
  • scribe landscape profiles
  • fix various cropping bugs with black borders
  • Add invert direction option (spread splitting is RTL but reading is LTR)
  • Vertical 4 panel mode for 4-koma manga
  • EPUB language setting instead of just en-US
  • EBOK option
  • Re-arranged GUI into 4 columns
  • removed unnecessary file copies so KCC is faster
  • support light novels! optimize just images with the kcc engine and preserve text in your normal epubs!
