Designing Fictional Packaging - Design Feedback

I’ve been working on a Fallout-inspired Unreal Engine project set in pre-war America, with a focus on making the world feel like a lived-in place rather than simply recreating the game assets.

This time, I’ve moved on to Buffout. There wasn’t a lot to work with on the original Fallout 4 in-game label, so I had more freedom to develop the packaging. My goal was to create something that feels like it could have genuinely existed within the Fallout universe, while still fitting the visual language of a pre-war pharmaceutical product.

Along with the bottle label, I also designed a retail display box for it.

This is where I’m a little out of my depth. I’m a 3D artist, not a packaging designer, and I’m not sure what kinds of information, markings, legal details, or other elements would typically appear on a pharmaceutical display box.

So I’d really appreciate any feedback from anyone with experience in this realm. What am I missing? Are there details that would make this feel more like a genuine retail package?

Any feedback or ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Adding detail to Mentats packaging

I’m a 3D modeler with a background in video game production. I’ve been out of the industry for many years, but I still enjoy modeling and creating scenes in Unreal Engine.

I’m currently working on a personal project based on the Fallout franchise, and I’ve been redesigning some of the in-universe products to make them feel a little more grounded and believable.

I’d be interested in hearing what I may have overlooked, or any details that stand out as unrealistic or could be improved from a packaging-design perspective.

Iron Golem [OC]

A little while back, someone posted in a different thread about hoping the original Iron Golems from Arena would make a comeback in the new game. I was the artist who modeled and animated them way back then.

I honestly hadn’t thought about that model in a very long time, so it was really nice to see that someone still remembered them fondly.

Several years after Arena, I remodeled the Iron Golems for fun, just for myself. That post reminded me that I still had the revised version tucked away all these years later.

So, here it is. I hope it brings back a few memories and makes everyone smile.

Building Pre-War America - City Press Newsstand

W.I.P. shots from a test in my ongoing personal project exploring Pre-War America in the Fallout universe.

This is a minor update, but I’ve been spending time redesigning the newsstand at the end of the street and giving it more in-universe flair.

The final scene will take place at night, but I’ve included some daytime shots to make the details easier to see. The monitors will eventually feature a GNN newscast, which I’ll be working on further down the road.

I’m having a lot of fun trying to imagine the little details of everyday life in Pre-War America, and the feedback from this community has given me a lot of ideas for the project.

I’d love to hear your thoughts, suggestions, or ideas for things I could add!

Building Pre-War America - A Fallout-inspired Project

Small update to the project.

First, I want to thank everyone who offered feedback on my last post. It gave me a lot of great ideas to work from, and I've already started incorporating some of them into the project. One suggestion was to add more propaganda and military recruitment posters, so I've started working those into the environment as well.

I've started branching out and working on some of the other areas of the scene. The pharmacy has been rebuilt, and I've also relocated the theater.

It isn't visible in these screenshots, but I've also created a new bus stop that blends elements from the designs seen in Fallout 3 and Fallout 4/76.

Still very much a work in progress, but it's slowly starting to feel like a real Pre-War city.

Building Pre-War America - A Fallout inspired project

This is a W.I.P. shot of a test from my ongoing personal project exploring Pre-War America in the Fallout universe. There is still a lot to do, but it is getting closer. I would love any thoughts on how to give the scene a bit more Fallout flavor, as I am hitting a wall. A phone booth, newspaper dispenser, mailbox, various billboards, etc. What would be here on a day-to-day basis?

Update on my Personal Fallout project

First off, thank you all for the encouragement on my last post. It really motivated me to keep pushing this project forward.

I finally took the plunge and started texturing the environment, and I'm glad I did, even if it completely changed my lighting plans. The sea of white placeholder materials is slowly disappearing, and it's finally starting to feel like a real place.

As a quick recap, everything is modeled in 3ds Max, with textures created using a combination of Substance 3D Painter, Photoshop, and Adobe Animate.

One of my favorite parts has been creating original, lore-inspired storefronts and signage to imagine what this city might have looked like before the Great War.

It's still very much a work in progress, but I'd love to hear what you think and, as always, I'm open to any feedback or suggestions.

Thanks again!

Personal Fallout project

Not sure if this is the right place for it, but here are some in‑editor shots from a personal worldbuilding project I’m developing in Unreal. I’ve always been fascinated by Fallout’s depiction of Pre‑War America, and I’m exploring my own interpretation of that retro‑future aesthetic.

All the modeling is done in 3DS Max, then brought into Unreal for material work and lighting passes. At the moment, only the signage and lighting fixtures have anything beyond normal maps; most surfaces are still in the block‑in or early texture stage.

I’d really appreciate any feedback, critiques, or ideas from the community. Anything from workflow tips to aesthetic suggestions is welcome.

GNN Plaza Background Models

I'm working on a Fallout-inspired Unreal Engine 5 short and wanted to get some feedback from fellow wastelanders.

The finished scene will be post-war, but I'm currently blocking everything out in its pre-war state to help establish the layout and overall composition. Because of that, there are no textures yet—just the models and some basic lighting.

I decided to sneak a nod to GNN into the background skyline. It's not meant to be the focus of the shot, but I wanted it to be recognizable to Fallout fans who spot it in the distance. I didn't want to recreate the in-game building exactly, since that would imply a specific location. Instead, I wanted something that felt inspired by GNR while keeping the setting intentionally vague.

What do you think? Does it read as a GNN Plaza, or is there anything you'd change to make it feel more authentic to the Fallout version?

The Cherry Bomb may of been based on this.

This may be old news to some, but I just discovered it today and thought it was too cool not to share.
I suspect that the cherry bomb was inspired by the 1959 Cadillac Cyclone. It was an incredibly innovative concept car for its time. With its futuristic styling, radar-guided safety features, and jet-age aesthetic, the Cyclone feels right at home in the Fallout universe. A very cool car.

Prep work for a Fallout style post-war water marketplace

Starting work on another Fallout idea in Unreal 5. This is me doodling and blocking out buildings for a downtown marketplace set in the Fallout universe with no real plan or layout. This is currently how the pre-war area would have been. The idea, when done, is that it will be flooded after the bombs, and a shanty town-style market will rise around the ruins of these buildings. I will be going for a Neon cyberpunk Tokyo market vibe, set in the destroyed flooded ruins, but Fallout Americana. Working on the pre-war area till I understand how everything will fit into the scene.

The real fun comes when I get to destroy these buildings, showing the aftermath of the bombs.

I am open to any thoughts or ideas on how to improve this idea.
