Well, now that the grayscale is done I can’t figure out how to color it properly

Hello again! I come back with looking for advice on going from grayscale to color. I use procreate and have tried different layer modes such as color and overlay but they all come out muddy or wash out the contrast as seen in image two.

I’ve also tried to do gradient maps but I have the same issues of it washing out the contrast and values.

Am I doing something wrong?? Any help is appreciated thank you!
