Map of the Caribbean in 2245: The Vacation Wasteland

In the decades preceding that fateful day in 2077, Latin America — and especially the Caribbean Islands — became a game board between the United States and China for who could control the region.

When that fateful day did come, however, the game came to a draw as both players were bathed in atomic hellfire and left the pieces to fend for themselves.

168 years later, the Caribbean Islands, now dubbed the “Vacation Wasteland”, is the heart of yet another conflict. Now, between the Cartels and the Flotilla.

Before the war, the United States funded and supplied various drug cartels in exchange for destabilizing their own governments to allow for greater American influence and control. Now, these same cartels and their descendants hold a tight grip on the wasteland; offering safety, wealth, slaves and chems to those who ally with them in their endless struggle against those who oppose them.

Founded shorty after the war by remnants of the United States Coast Guard and Navy, the Flotilla is the title of the massive fleet of ships that patrol the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico as one. Their goal is to maintain order, and wipe out any raiders, pirates or smugglers unfortunate enough to enter their line of fire.

This conflict came to a head five years ago, when an alliance of Cartels, pirates and various others with grudges against the Flotilla trapped the Flotilla within the Windward Passage and attacked from all fronts. The following battle would devastate both sides, killing off various powerful leaders, greatly reducing their numbers and leaving both limping and bleeding.

Now, after both parties have had time to regather their strength and learn from their mistakes, many see signs of a fast approaching Second Battle of Windward Passage (or something to that effect) — and it is unlikely to end in a draw.

Valyrian Culture vs. Westerosi Culture?

I want to write a fic set right before the Doom of Valyria set in, well, Valyria. But, the thing is, the Seven Kingdoms that we're all used to are a whole hell of a lot different from the way Valyria did things. So, I'd like to have a comprehensive list on how the Freehold differs from the Sunset Kingdoms.

Differences I already know:

  • No monarchy/royal family/etc. The Valyrian Freehold is ran in council by land-owning "lords freeholder", who are de jure equal but de facto some are more powerful than others. (i.e., the Dragonlords, lords freeholder who raise and ride dragons.)
  • Slavery. Like, so much slavery.
  • Brothers are married to sisters "by custom" (I'll get back to this one later.)
  • Also polygamy.
  • An obvious one, but Valyria has their own pantheon distinct from the Faith of the Seven and all it entails (i.e., knighthood, septons and septas, septs. But it's more than likely that Valyria had its own equivalent priests, priestesses and temples. Unsure if there's anything analogous to knights and/or knighthood.)
  • No family heraldry, but individuals can use personal arms/military banners.
  • Did I mention slavery?
  • Common use of blood magic, and everything that's associated with that.
  • Wanton disregard for human decency.
  • At times of need, the lords freeholder can elect an Archon which (I presume) acts as a temporary leader of all Valyria until they get booted out when they're not needed anymore. (Like the Roman dictator system before Julius Caesar made himself dictator for life and then died.)
  • Ruling class is a lot more ethnically homogenous than in Westeros.
  • Lots of magic in general. And. Y'know. Human sacrifice.
  • Also lots of sacrificing slaves for magic.
  • Valyrian Freehold was a whole hell of a lot bigger than the holdings of the Iron Throne.
  • More that I'm probably forgetting.

Okay, so that was a lot more differences than I thought I'd have listed out.

Anyways, onto the stuff I'm less certain about:

  • How fervent was the whole "sibling marriage" thing? Like, among regular lords freeholder, I'm sure they had plenty of marriages between them alongside the sibling marriages. The principle of "marrying someone from a different house builds a bond between their house and mine" doesn't change between Essos and Westeros, I'm sure. But, the main way the Dragonlords control their dragons is dictated via bloodlines. (i.e., a Targaryen couldn't control a Belaerys dragon, and vice versa.) So, that's incentive for Dragonlord houses to "keep it in the family", as it were. So, really it's a choice between marriage alliances and dragons. (Although, it's more than likely that a happy medium was kept to get the benefits of "we have solid control of our dragons" and "we have friends who have solid control of their dragons", and I'm just making a false dichotomy. Either way, I'd like to get a second opinion.)
  • How ethnically diverse was the ruling class of the Freehold, anyways? Were they all silver-haired purple-eyed pureblooded Valyrians, or were there some Rhoynar or Ghiscari that managed to wrangle their way up the hierarchy?
  • Was there any organisations analogous to the Night's Watch, Maesters, Silent Sisters, etc.? Not just for the purpose of "we don't want to deal with your children, go say a vow that you won't have any more or else you'll die" or "join the club or be beheaded for your crimes". I would imagine that there would be some manner of scholarly or religious order around Valyria. (Actually, I have a feeling all of those niches would be fulfilled by enslavement somehow, so this might be a moot point.)
  • How much do we even know about the Valyrian Pantheon, anyways? We know, like, four of their names and not much else. (Balerion, Vhagar, Meraxes and Syrax.) What domains did each of them control? What real world mythos is it most similar to? How were they worshipped? (Okay, probably blood sacrifices.) Who were the most valued gods? Was there a top god? All this and more in "Stuff GRRM has barely thought about in the slightest."
  • Did the Freehold have Small Council type titles for certain lords? Probably, right? I mean, not 1:1, of course, but something analogous to it I'll bet.
  • Was the Sea of Sighs always called that? Feels like a post-Doom renaming to me, but you never know.
  • What parts of Valyria were considered backwater shitholes? This is a bit of an unserious question, but there's always somewhere.

Alright, so most of these have no canon answers. That's kind of on purpose, I like reading the answers that people on here make up. Don't feel pressured to answer all of these if you don't want to, hell you could pose your own questions in the comments if you like. Really, this is mostly just stream of consciousness typed out onto a Reddit post.

Anyways, hope y'all have fun making up 90% of the answers because we know diddly squat about pre-Doom Valyria.

Got bored and made this LBP logo design

Not much to say here, just messing around in Procreate (art program I use) and ended up with this.

Thought I’d post it here because why not. Also got some alt. color variants, in case anyone was interested.
