Beetlejuice The Musical at Prince Edward Theatre West End Review

The iconic musical has finally hit the big time in London!

Beetlejuice The Musical first premiered on Broadway in 2019. The show is based on the classic Tim Burton film of the same name and has become a beloved movie. Similarly, the show became popular through its catchy songs, which are still often listen too by theatre kids of today. The story follows Lydia whose mom has recently passed away. With grief driving her actions, she attempts to connect with her father who is not ready to talk about his wife. Here she meets Beetlejuice, a demon from hell who is eager to live and be seen: leading to a chaotic and unpredictable adventure. The parallel between Beetlejuice and Lydia’s drive to be seen is the heart of the show, empowered by the supporting cast.

The sets in this production are well developed and allow for the ghostly appearance. Alongside this, projection is used effectively to create more complex images on stage, though at times this felt overused. The soundtrack is mixed at times, with some strong songs such as ‘Dead Mom’ and ‘Home’ being highlights of the production. Similarly, the lighting was great with the use of greens and purples, helping to create an eerie but uplifting atmosphere.

The entire ensemble and supporting roles had lots of opportunities to explore their characters, through innovative choreography and creative costuming. Aimee Atkinson as Delia brings his enthusiasm to her role and is a brilliant contrast against Lydia. Alasdair Harvey as Charles Deetz is able to capture the grief of his wife well throughout his role. Similarly, Chelsey Halfpenny and David Hunter as Barbara Maitland and Adam Maitland were a fantastic duo, with chemistry that came effortlessly off the stage.

Hannah Nordberg as Lydia and David Flynn as Beetlejuice are the heart of this production and story. Nordberg’s performance is grounded, real and emotional which is additionally supported by phenomenal vocals. Specifically, Nordberg get to sing the fan-favourite song ‘Dead Mom’ and was beautifully able to capture this. Alongside Nordberg, Flynn gets to play the charismatic ‘dead guy’, Beetlejuice, perfectly on stage. With a slightly different take on the voice, Flynn gets to explore the character is a unique way which makes his Beetlejuice a joy to watch. Changes to the script also allow for new references (such as some to Paddington) which brings the life to the piece.

Beetlejuice continues to play till next year. Book your tickets now!

Theatre Enthusiasts Group

Hi all!

We run Rhombus Rota. Unfortunately we are unable to get to the Cambridgeshire county as often as possible. Therefore we are looking for someone to join the group. If you want more information please message. Here is our vision page:

‘At Rhombus Rota, we aim to support the arts. We are passionate about all types of theatre, local, amateur and professional: often visiting multiple venues across the UK.

Theatre offers a unique, diverse and engaging experience for both audience members and cast/crew. It allows for an outlet for expression, whatever art form it takes. Seeing a variety from across the UK opens up new possibilities and shows a great love for theatre. Theatre should be accessible for everyone regardless of their identity and they should be celebrated as individuals. Here at Rhombus Rota, we pride ourselves in advocating for positivity within the arts, recognising the work behind a production and promoting brilliance.

As avid lovers of theatre, we are always open to reviewing and discussing shows with the intention of increasing audience participation.’

Thank you :)
