Moving my childminding business to the Fen area, budget £300k. Which lively towns have the best space vs funding balance?

Hi everyone! I’m currently planning a move up from a mixed area in Kent to the Fenland region (Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, or South Lincolnshire) and would love some local insight on where to look.

I am a registered childminder moving my business with me. I have a fairly fixed budget of £300,000 for a house, and because I work entirely from home, my two absolute biggest priorities are:

  1. Maximum floor space for the money (need plenty of room for minded kids and my own child).

  2. A solid population of working families who need early-years childcare.

I’m trying to avoid "dead-end" or entirely sleepy villages. I’m looking for a town with a bit of life to it, good amenities, and a nice community to raise my kid in. I’m definitely not a snob (coming from Kent, I'm well used to areas having their rough and smooth parts!), so I just want somewhere safe, friendly, and community-minded.

I've researched the local government funding rates for early years and found that Peterborough Council pays the highest rates, followed by Cambridgeshire, with Lincolnshire offering the lowest funding.

Because of this, I'm trying to weigh up whether it's better to get a massive house in a cheaper Lincolnshire town (like Spalding or Holbeach) vs a slightly smaller house in a better-paying Cambridgeshire/Peterborough catchment.

Current places on my radar (but please correct my assumptions!):

Market Deeping / Deeping St James: Lincolnshire, but right on the Peterborough border, does it feel too quiet?

Whittlesey or March: Cambridgeshire/Fenland, how is the family demand here?

Peterborough Suburbs/Towns: Like Yaxley or Whittlesey borders, can I get good floor space for £300k?

Spalding: Cheaper houses, but how is the vibe and the lower LCC funding impact?

If you were in my shoes looking for the best balance of house size, childcare demand, and local community life under £300k, where would you look?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Going camping Thursday and realised I got a 4 man 2 bedroom tent rather than 4 man 1 bedroom, will this be a problem?

Hey all, looking for some wisdom from others who have done it.

My partner and I (and our dog) dipped our toes into camping but suddenly fell pregnant shortly after we bought the gear. Anyways 2 years on and we're trying again with the little one in tow, and we've remembered our old tent was only a 2 man.

We went to decathlon and purchased what we thought was the arpenaz 4.1 but instead picked up a 4.2 someone had put on the wrong rack. We only spotted the mistake when doing a trial run today in our garden.

Before we rush back to decathlon, should we trial run the 2 bedroom set up? Any comments on pros or cons of each? It'll be myself, my partner, a 16 month old, and a spaniel. We're thinking maybe we split sleep and one of us has the dog and the other the kid?

Bonus question, any tips for going camping with a child? 🤣

Thanks all!

Am I crazy for wanting to do this?

Plan:

30mm lowering springs

18" aftermarkets w/ low profile (undecided on colour)

Splitter and skirts to make up the difference in height

Dechrome and tints

I think it's subtle but ultimately turns the car into a nice to look at one. With it being an EV I estimate the wheels and aero changes will lose a few miles or range but it's whatever.

I'm also aware of the wider arches in the AI mockup but I'm ultimately unsure on these as I don't fancy spacers.

Am I crazy for wanting to mod our boring family EV?

Considering a move from Kent to Peterborough (or nearby towns) as childminders, what should we know?

Hi all,

My partner and I are childminders currently based in Kent, and we're seriously considering relocating up to Peterborough or one of the surrounding towns, possibly as far out as Spalding. Looking to pick the brains of people who actually live there before we commit.

A few things we'd love honest opinions on:

  • What's day-to-day life actually like in Peterborough itself vs. the smaller towns around it (Stamford, Market Deeping, Bourne, Spalding, Yaxley, Whittlesey, etc.)? Good, bad, and the stuff nobody tells you until you've moved.
  • As childminders, we're obviously interested in what the childcare landscape looks like from a parent's side too. If you've got young kids, what's been your experience finding childcare? Are childminders in demand, or is it mostly nursery first round here? Anything about waiting lists, or areas where it's genuinely hard to find a spot?
  • Which areas would you actually recommend for a family with young children, and just as usefully, which would you steer us away from? We're not precious about a specific town, just want somewhere decent to live and raise our own kids while we build the business back up.
  • Lastly, this might be a big ask, but if anyone's bought or sold up there recently and had a genuinely good experience with an estate agent (someone straightforward, not pushy, actually knows the area rather than just wanting a quick sale), we'd really appreciate a name. Kent prices have made local agents feel a bit sharp elbowed, so a recommendation for someone honest would go a long way.

Thanks in advance. Really appreciate any first-hand experience, good or bad. We'd rather hear the unvarnished version now than find out the hard way after we've moved.

Effectively lost all my CPDs due to heat, what to do next?

I've been having a hard time keeping the heat down in my tank, and whether it was just the heat, or the breeder had bad inbreeding stock, my population of CDPs have gone from 30 to around 8 over the last month due to wasting disease.

The parameters have always been great and the tank gets a lot of care and attention, and it's not my only one, I've been running the tanks for just over a year now.

I've treated the tank and my other schools and species seem entirely unaffected, I've not had any other losses other than CPDs. I assume the other 8 will go due to stress from small numbers or infection.

The whole tank is a 300L community with 3 main schools of Praecox, Zebra Danio, and Albino Cory's. I also have a strong shrimp and snail community in the tank alongside two rouge female bristlenose I've collected 😂

Now I've very unfortunately had some bioload freed up, would you make use of it if it was your tank, or would you just leave it for a bit?

Need to granny charge until April, is this the best solution to a bad situation or am I overthinking it?

Hey all,

My partner and I recently purchased an EV, but live in flats. We were due to move which is why we had the change in cars, but our move has been pushed back until April due to needing another tax return.

I've read loads of stories about granny charging and whilst we can charge the car using destination charging or charger sharing in the local estate, I was wondering if there was a way for us to make use of our lower electricity rate at home.

Above is a lead and plug rated for EV certification (according to the website, I'm not an electrician). Would this be the safest way to charge at home in the interim or should I just suck it up and charge elsewhere?

Thanks in advance all 👍

Thoughts on the MG5? 61kW original model not the face lift.

Picking mine up Wednesday, I've worked with energy companies and built apps for EV charging but never owned one myself. Anything to know about the model in particular?

As an aside anything to know about EVs in general? As said above I've kinda worked in the industry but never owned one, any shocks I should be prepared for aside from the fuel cost savings 🤣
