Dual 1015

Picked up this Dual 1015 with United Audio plinth for $20 on FB marketplace. It looks incredibly clean - non-smoking, pet-free home.

Most features seem to work, although it’s missing the cartridge sled, so I can’t actually play a record. Plan to order a replacement sled on eBay. So far the only problems I’m aware of are a crack in the plastic cover and I can’t get it to switch from 33-1/3 to 45. The latter issue might be user error on my part. It might not switch to 45 when the tall spindle for LP’s is installed. That’s the only spindle that came with it.

Denon DR-M33HX

Latest addition to my collection. That makes 9 decks so far (2 Denon, 3 SONY, 1 Teac, 1 Sankyo, 1 Aiwa, 1 Harman Kardon). Got this on an auction site for $45 including shipping. Belts are in good shape and so far everything seems to work.

Refurbished Original Large Advents

Finally finished restoring my Original Large Advents (OLA). The cabinets were beat to hell, grille cloth in tatters (see photo), woofers needed re-foamed, and both tweeters dead. I managed to find two original fried egg tweeters, re-capped, re-foamed, new cloth, and patched up the cabinets. Wow, do they sound good! Doing some A-B switching with my Infinity RS-6B's.

Wharfedale W70E "Rosedales"

Just picked up these Wharfedale W70E's on FB Marketplace for $125. I understand these were known as the "Rosedale" in the UK. Cabinets are in excellent shape, including the decorative trim. Just a little dirty and a few minor dings. Drivers appear to be all original, including the purple tweeter. Haven't had a chance to test them yet. Fingers crossed that everything works. Already ordered new caps to replace the original Minerva caps from the early 1970s.

Large Advent project

Pick up a pair of Original Large Advent (OLA) speakers yesterday. Original woofers with masonite surround, original fried egg tweeters. Rev 2 style crossover. I like the fact that the paper labels (even the warranty card) are still intact. Guy wanted $100 but I talked him down to $50 because of the awful condition.

Got lots of work to do. The grill cloths are toast. Some of the vinyl is peeling off and corners are damaged. Woofers need to be refoamed. And the tweeters aren’t working. Hopefully recapping the crossovers will fix that. Or it’s just a dirty tweeter switch.

Bad cap(s) in subwoofer?

Bought a Dayton 12” subwoofer really cheap. Wasn’t able to test it, but for what I paid, I didn’t expect it to be in perfect working condition. Sure enough, when I plug it in, it makes a constant low rumbling noise. It’s not even hooked up to an amp. I opened it up and this big 6800uf cap seems to have a leak like an old battery. It’s hard to see the other cap behind it but it might have a leak too. I assume this could be the source of the problem. Thoughts? Worth replacing?

Silver and wood!

Love the look of silver face with wood enclosures. I posted a pic of the Yamaha CA-810 a few weeks ago, but recently refinished the box. Also just added this SONY STR-7015 and refinished its box too.

Worth fixing? Capacitor suggestions?

Picked up these Eico HFS-3 speakers for practically nothing. One makes a “pop” sound when the amp first turns on, but otherwise plays fine. The other speaker is very crackly (tried a different speaker and I know it’s not the amp). I’ve read that these ancient 1960s caps should probably be replaced. I can read the voltage and microfarad ratings, but not sure what else to be aware of if I replace these caps. Any suggestions for specific brands/types of caps? Don’t want to spend a fortune since I’m not sure the speakers have much value.

Eico HFS-3 speakers

Picked up these bad boys today for my basement system. Don’t know a whole lot about them other than they came in a kit (like Dynaco or Heathkit), 12” woofer, 8” mid, and 3.5” cone tweeter. 16 ohms impedance.

They sound badass. Great soundstage. Wish I could move them farther apart to really appreciate the soundstage, but I’m a bit limited for space.

Latest addition - Yamaha CA-810

Just picked this up from Marketplace for $100. Wood is in great condition. A few small blemishes on the silver face. Sounds awesome. How’d I do? Gonna pair it with a silver face Sankyo tape deck.

Latest addition to my collection. Picked up this Sankyo STD1700 on FB Marketplace for $20. It was in perfect mechanical condition - motor, belts, etc. But it made an awful static/buzzing noise when I played a tape, regardless of whether I used the headphone jack or line out to my amp.

Cleaned the heads three times with 99% isopropyl alcohol, demagged, and sprayed the heck out of every switch with deoxit. Took a while, but it’s back to life. Really amazed at the sound quality. Much clearer than the AIWA AD-R40 sitting on top of it (also a rescue).
