Do I do anything with the dial?

Last year I got a little deeper into watches and for some reason wanted a small vintage piece I could wear as a dress watch. Really enjoying reruns of Dragnet as a kid I hit the google box to try and find what Jack Webb wore during those days and some suggested a Seamaster De Ville. I found and purchased a 1962 model. The images didn’t show the dial well and frankly I did worry much about the originality as much as the watch running well, which it does.

In the images you can see a paint touch up and obvious other age and wear marks. The question is, do I do anything with it?

MACV SOG Homage?

I did a quick search on a few subs but no luck.Anyone doing MACV SOG Seiko builds with off the shelf/AliEx parts and not a new SNK build?

Have a parts list?

I’ve not found dials, just folks taking a new SNK, adding white day/date dials and maybe removing the “5” from them.

I’m eating an alternator about every six months. I’m fortunate that the first one I bought was a Carquest with a lifetime warranty but after 5 or 6 I know there has to be something specific with the Excursion. I’ve replaced the pigtail and batteries as well but still have issues. The last one went in the second week of December and this morning the low charging indicator light came on for the first time. I’ll have a couple weeks, based on past experience, before it completely craps out.

Edit to add, the light is not illuminating at idle, it will come on at about 2200 RPM and stay on as you decelerate to about 1500 RPM then go out.

Looking for places to look, things to try or others who have had the same problem and found real solutions.

Or is it really plausible that all those alternators were trash and I need to drop some coin on a different brand?

Popped into a shop at Las Vegas airport this morning on the way through and brought home a new Shinola.

I was in Vegas and visited a few of the shops at Ceasar’s Forum. Swatch, IWC, Bucherer Jeweler and Panerai. Frankly, the Panerai boutique was not what I anticipated. I had a much more frank and enjoyable conversation about Panerai in Bucherer and I think they had more on display (all pre-owned) than the boutique.

I explained to both that I’m early in my shopping for something late in the year to celebrate my 20th anniversary and that I’m likely stuck with 40mm as I’ve lost some weight and my larger watches seem disproportionately large now. The salesman at Bucherer offered to open cases and let try things on… etc. I didn’t but he offered. The salesman at the boutique wasn’t necessarily rude but was dismissive and disinterested. Frankly, had I been a buyer that day I’d bought secondhand at Bucherer…

Just my experience and genuinely hope others have had and continue to have wonderful experiences with boutiques.

Be worth looking for Shinola Canfields in stores… snagged one at an airport store. Tag still said $795 though Shinola has upped the MSRP to $895 online and the store scanner reflected that. They honored the tag price and added a veterans discount.

I’m calling it the Craig Connery. TMI/Seiko NH34 GMT base, Seamaster style case, Topographical bezel, WOE 007 strap.

It’s important to me that there is no branding when I do something like this. We all know what it’s not so why try to pass it off. I like putting together my own thing.

NH34 GMT build. Seamaster style case, WOE 007 strap, topo bezel ring.

The dial was not a GMT dial so I used diamond jewelers files to open the center hole.

Very happy with the look.

Been spending a small fortune with my watch maker. Last week I picked up my Vietnam era Zodiac Hermetic and an Elgin engraved with name and service number dating to just before Korea. Today I dropped of my Waltham Ordnance Dept watch to be serviced and the barrel replaced and picked up my WWI trench watch. On a freshly died and oiled, homemade bund strap and keeping great time. Once the Waltham and a Seiko 7548 are done my 10 watch military sub collection will be done. Few weeks and I’ll post them all together.
