Rainy Sunday: Billy Meier: Episode 239

The run of pretty days finally has ended in NYC, so I’m doing some Advanced Lounging and going back to some of my favorite older eps. I found myself shooting LOL’ing on a few different occasions during Billy Meier, the man, the myth, the MO-lehste. Super tight episode with all three hosts really on it during this one. The agonizing bouts of alien pronunciations really do make this one a must-review.

Twilight Zone Apex Mountain?

It’s a lazy Saturday late evening and I’m staying in. So I’m turning back the clock and rocking some Twilight Zone and then later I’ll fall asleep to a Mystery Science Theater 3000. I randomly decided to pick a stretch in season 2 and bang out 5 episodes. Anyway, we’ve been getting some incredible Rewatchables lately, including my absolute delight that Bill had 1968’s 2001 Space Odyssey on the queue, not to mention that they had Spielberg on! Well, Spielberg has paid a ton of homage to Rod Serling, creator of the sci fi and fantasy episodes that laid the groundwork for Kubrick when it aired from 1959-64. I hope that Bill continues to delve into the classics and also opens his mind to fantasy a little more. In the spirit of trying my TV version of the Rewatchables, I thought I’d try to see if I could make a case for an Apex Mountain for Rod Serling in the Twilight Zone.

I started with episode 3 of season 2 - “Nervous Man in a Four-Dollar Room”, a tour de force by Joe Mantell in what is essentially a one-man s
Next up is the first Twilight Zone episode I ever saw, “A Thing About Machines” (season 2, episode 4). I still remember how vaguely criminal I felt when I tuned this in on WPIX in NYC. Richard Haydn stars as a hugely prissy food critic who has some tech issues around his house. A little bit of a lull then with “The Howling Man.” It’s one of Serling’s greatest lessons about perspective. But it’s more of a 7/10 than the 10s surrounding it.

Then, we finish with two all timers — “Eye of the Beholder” (s2 e6) has us spending a half-hour with a woman who is about so see if her last-chance medical procedure has remedied her hideous facial deformity . Probably the best reveal in the series and a famous lesson imparted. Then we end with my favorite episode, “Nick of Time.” William Shatner is a young newlywed heading cross country with his lovely bride, Patricia Breslin. After they have a bit of car trouble, they soon discover that they’ve located a mechanic that sits on the city limits of the Twilight Zone.

Man, season 2 of Twilight Zone is just straight classic after classic. I can’t believe this show is 60 years old. Just wild.

I think season 2 has to be Serling’s Apex Mountain. It doesn’t have my personal favorite episode — A Passage for Trumpet starring Jack Klugman aired right at the end of season 1, but it has zero bad eps, in my mind and has classics like Art Carney in “The Night of the Meek” in its midst. Anyway, I just was peacefully bored on a Saturday night and figured I’d see if there any other Twilight Zone fans on this sub.

Witness to Murder (1954)

I just watched this nifty little suspense gem and thought I’d pass on my enthusiastic recommendation. Barbara Stanwyck stars as a career gal who is grinding away trying to get ahead. Seems a pretty work-sleep-repeat type situation — until murder intrudes!

Looking out her apartment window one evening, Stanwyck has a front row seat to her neighbor murdering a young woman! Of course Stanwyck freaks and calls the cops, but by the time they make it over to interrogate George Sanders, all evidence of the murder is hidden.

Following the murder, we are left with only one hell of a conflict. George Sanders is,so creepy and so menacing and so good as the “denazified” ex-German military officer while Stanwyck is as nuanced and strong as can be as she feels like in a way she has no choice but to doubt her sanity. It’s a brisk 92 minutes full of gaslighting, counter-moves and a very strong moral about the word of a woman in 1954: no matter what progress people claimed they still took the word of a nazi over a woman.

One fun note - I thought I heard the Star Trek (original series) theme about 30 minutes in, and as it turns out, Joseph Mullendore, who did orchestration on this film, also worked on 1966’s Star Trek. I guess he liked that one hook!

Fun movie overall — George Sanders is just so good as a villain and Stanwyck has got the chops to go toe to toe. I’m giving it 7.5/10.

OH! Almost forgot. This little gem had the misfortune to be released within the same month as Rear Window. Obviously Hitchcock won the Battle of Voyeurs to Murder, but tWitness to Murder still cooks. Interesting that two major studios went after this narrative in the same time. I wonder what vibe they were reacting to!

Red 3x Champ Hat

My June order from Mitchell & Ness has started to trickle in. I usually get only retro gear from M&N, as their quality can be sus on modern stuff. But I needed this red hat (and a sweet Wu York Knicks x Wu Tang shirt) and this hat is as excellent as advertised. So much “2x Champs” merch was released in May/June and immediately became obsolete. So I was pleasantly surprised to see a 3x in my favorite color. Sometimes I just got to go beyond the official Knicks color ways and this is going to get such a lot of play. It’s a SnapBack and is overall good quality.

Met the author of Halloween (1978) novelization

I met Richard Curtis on Friday evening at dinner. He’s a literary agent who used to rep someone I know. He is in his 80s now and he really lit up when I went super fanboy on him. He said he is having a 50th anniversary of the book coming out and said he would send me an essay on the book and give me a copy. I asked him if could take him for a drink or lunch in August and he was happy to do that. He mentioned that he had come up with the Samhain idea about the Irish curse that opens his novel and had no idea they were going to work it into the film in any version. Anyway, he was thrilled to know there is a whole group of us lunatics still talking about the movie and even the novel. So if anyone has any questions for him, let me know and I;l be sure to ask him when I see him next month.

Salary Cap Situation Before Draft

Given all the talk about the second apron, I wanted to make a thread that has the basic information on our current cap sheet.

Right now, we have 8 players signed. We are committed to about $201 million in salary for 8 players. Alvarado has an option at 4.6mm that he will decide on by the end of Friday

Right now we are about $21 million under the second apron with 6 players left (or 5 + Alvarado) to sign. Last year, the rookie minimum was $1.2 million and vet minimum $2 million. Those will go up slightly I’m sure. But the idea is that the least we can spend to fill out the 14-man minimum roster is like &.5 million dollars — if they are all rookies.

We have got to trade Dadiet I think, to get a little more space.

Just good to know where we are as the Mitch debate goes on

Very useful stretch

Came across an interesting video done for trail runners dealing with PF. One of the techniques she used has been really helpful with just a few tries. It starts right around 4 minutes into this video. As the creator says, it does feel a bit odd, like shaking hands with your foot. But I found it really relieving. Hope it helps if you try it!

JIME JOMES WAS BAD!

Legend has it that he was very bad! But, this movie is pretty good if you are looking for some 70s based-on-a-true-story action!
