Clancy case

this is touchy subject but after watching the trial a few days, I just wonder if collagen/glycine could have been really important in post partum recover. glycine is used for sleep and has been used in high doses for schizophrenia and OCD. it takes a lot of collagen to produce a baby and even recover from tearing or c sections. bone broth was traditionally given in TCM as part of post partum recovery to replenish yin.

im not a doctor but collagen and glycine have really helped my sleep and anxiety and I just wonder how much of post partum anxiety or depression or psychosis is really just symptoms of depletion. obviously drugs will never fix a deficiency and I’m wondering if more traditional medicine practices like TCM actually have a wisdom that we are lacking.

I don’t want to stir the pot and cause controversy , this was just something I was thinking of while watching

eta - I’m not against western medicine, I just think humanity survived for thousands of years and TCM was honed for a couple thousand at least, which isn’t trivial. I just wondered if we should return to traditional methods when western ones don’t work

Collagen

does anyone have an opinion on collagen? after long term keto/carnivore, I’ve found it’s a necessity and don’t know how people survive without it. it makes up 1/3 of our body’s protein so i don’t see how we could get enough without specifically eating it. glycine is a major component of it and is used for sleep and anxiety and I wonder if that’s what ppl are missing who report insomnia on this diet. just curious what others think and if they’ve found they need to sup it (or make bone broth, pork skin, chicken feet, etc on the regular)

Quantity of food

I’ve always been a big eater and I’m tall but I feel like I eat like a tank 😂 I can easily have 3 lbs of ground beef a day or like 30 eggs. I’m 6’0 and like 145 so idk where the food goes… I walk like an hr a day. does anyone else consume what they feel is more than they need? (it’s not a body image/eating disorder thing, I’m just kind of confused 🥲 I just eat until I’m full but when I see how little other ppl eat I wonder…). I’ve been keto for like 8 years and carnivore for 6 so it’s not like I’m “healing” or something…

Postpartum

Seeing the Lindsay Clancy case that’s blowing up in the media made me think about postpartum depression and psychosis... (I know theres a lot of details about the case that need to be sorted).

If its known that childbirth can cause depression and even psychosis, wouldn’t common sense lead us to realize that when our body is physically depleted that mental health suffers? as a woman, you have just drained our own resources of nutrients and energy to create and deliver a human. You obviously need to replenished them or you will become sick. why are we treating nutrient deficiencies with drugs? that’s never going make the deficiency go away… why aren’t we testing post partum mothers with vitamin panels? we know you dont feel yourself from overwork, over training, or malnutrition, so why do we think postpartum psychosis is a mysterious illness or moral failing? what if she had been treated with a better diet, rest, and help with childcare like in traditional culture?

we are so quick to focus on the crime, but what does this show on our culture and support for mothers? obviously this is an extreme case but it’s a spectrum and many women are suffering even if it’s not to this extent.

(again, the details of the case aren’t fully revealed but I’m talking about the general concept)

Beef/chicken liver

I’m gonna sound like a nut, but I’ve been feeling a lot better after eating liver. I usually have a huge appetite , so I was trying to find something nutrient dense that would be satiating. it’s been hard to overeat liver so it’s been good to have when I get ravenous… I remember I used to hate it and now I love it. I guess it’s probably all the vitamins and minerals in it that make your body self regulate and become full bc I could overeat pretty much anything else. I also feel a lot more alert and energized after, almost like a drug or something. ok ya I sound like a total nut, but i guess it’s like taking a multi vitamin?

idk I thought I’d throw it out there for ppl who have trouble w overeating or fatigue. definitely hasn’t been a cure all but did notice benefits

Cgm appreciation

I was recently diagnosed and Im so grateful for this technology. I truely can’t fathom having to constantly check manually or just go without knowing at all. yes, I’m still learning how to not accidentally knock it but oh my gosh I’m just so happy this exists. I feel like I’ve learned so much with how certain foods, temps, moods effect me in such a short time. thats it, just really thankful and feeling empowered 😌

Collagen

since getting sick, my hair and nails stopped growing so I’ve been taking collagen. I’ve read that it can also lower glucose and lipids (there seems to be quite a few studies). has anyone else seen improvement from this? if high sugar levels degrade collagen, it would make sense that diabetics may have a higher requirement.

glycine, one of the main amino acids in collagen has been shown to lower glucose too… https://www.reddit.com/r/Type1Diabetes/comments/1lk58tv/solution_for_dawn_phenomenon/

Secondary carnitine deficiency

does anyone have secondary carnitine deficienc? my blood levels were very low so I have a script for 3g/day. apparently primary carnitine deficiency is a genetic cond where you have to be on it for life but secondary is common in diabete, esp type 1. just curious bc I haven’t heard much talk about it

does anyone have secondary carnitine deficiency? apparently its common with type 1 and I found out though a blood test that was completely not on my radar.

it’s helped me feel a bit better energy wise. my dr gave me a script for 3g/day so I get it through my pharmacy but apparently it’s also an OTC supplement. some people have “primary carnitine deficiency“ which is a genetic disease and they have to be on it for life.

just thought this was interesting bc id never heard of it until my doctor told me about it… I feel like if you are experiencing diabetes burnout, it may be worth getting checked for bc i was extremely deficient and had no energy

please don’t come for me but I’ve been having severe gut pain for years before diagnosis. I was told it was just IBS after extensive testing and my GI recommended Iberogast and peppermint tea. has anyone tried bone broth (homemade) or gelatin or collagen? I don’t really want to buy any powders or supplements so I’ve been making my own. I know it will probably take a while to see a difference but did anyone try this and see any benefits for your gut?

seems to make my skin softer so I’m wondering if its helping the collagen in my gut lining too. I’ve been saving the bones from roasts and also buying beef tendons and pork skin from my local Asian market and experimenting…
