The battery life thing...

I've been using a Karoo 3 for 2 years now (bundled with my S-Works). For the most part I really like it, but that battery life thing...let me explain.

Yesterday went on a 124 mile ride with bike spouse. As usual had my K3 charged up to 100%, using my Varia and so on, brightness at 7%.

We'd ridden for about 33 miles (SF Caltrain across Golden Gate Bridge, up Hawk Hill, Rodeo Beach and so on) and I checked the battery when we were at a coffee stop across from Larkspur Ferry Terminal and it had already gone down to 75% which is a pretty steep drop.

Usually I bring a little power pack in my jersey pocket so I can charge it up at lunch or whenever. As it turned out, I forgot to bring it with me yesterday.

I also had to use the map quite a bit.

Anyway by mile 61 (about half way through) we were at the top of Marshall Wall and checked the battery % again and I was down to 44%. OMG. I put it on Battery Save which helped some, but any time a car was behind me the screen would pop back on due to my Varia.

By the time we got to Point Reyes Station I was down to 17%. Again, didn't have my power pack.

I ended up turning the Varia off altogether and that helped a lot, fortunately I had my rear view mirror as a backup.

By the time I got back to the Larkspur Ferry Terminal I was down to 8% and I really needed to use the map because I had lost my way and the other riders were nowhere to be seen (although bike spouse was tracking me on WhatsApp). Ended up calling an Uber and getting a ride to Mikes Bikes in Sausalito where I met up with bike spouse (thankfully the driver had a charging cable so I got the Karoo up to 18% and without using the Varia or the map that was sufficient to make it back to SF Caltrain).

Don't get me wrong, I really love the K3, my eyesight is not the sharpest when it comes to reading and I find the sharpness and clarity of the Karoo screen much easier to read without reading glasses.

But as someone who regularly does mega long rides (125-200+ miles) every week, yesterday really brought home the issue of battery life, basically if I don't remember to bring a power pack with me, I'm screwed.

I googled last night and sure enough, the combination of the Varia + using the map = big battery drain.

Again, love the K3, except for the battery life.

This is mostly just a vent...bike spouse had a Karoo as well, liked it for the same reasons I like it, but got rid of it and got a Garmin 1040 Solar for the same reason I am now considering switching to Garmin.

I'm far from a genius but I'm not sure why Hammerhead, with their great customer service and support, can't make a Karoo Solar or something similar where I can use the features I want to use without having to worry about battery drain.

Fifth Ave, San Mateo

This is my neighborhood so it’s probably a big deal only to me but I was very happy to see that the City of San Mateo is following through on making Fifth Ave ‘bike friendly’ the entire length. West 5th has had designated bike lanes for a few years now and the piece east of Delaware Street is a Bike Boulevard so nice to see that the re-striping and paving project includes bike lanes through the downtown portion.

I know it’s not bollards or anything like that but this road is used pretty frequently by myself and other cyclists.

Note I included a pic of the No Stopping sign because I have personally witnessed the enforcement in action when someone ignored the signs and parked in the bike lane 🤬😅

New Bike Month (and new bling day!)

Wanted to show off my still-new custom build, it's been a month BUT I just added some titanium bling including bolts and a stem cap. No kids + no actual spouse + a little disposable income = spending too much on bikes but ain't she sweet????

ETA:

thank you all!

Forgot to mention that I also invested in shorter crank arms. I’m 5’3” and after bike spouse told me about Jonas V going to short arms, I wanted them. I received a Google notification of an article announcing the new SRAM short cranks, ran to my LBS, and asked Ben if he could order them for me. He hadn’t heard about them yet 🤔😀 but ordered me the 150s. My Aethos came with 165s.

I’ve always had issues trying to keep my cadence up but the shorter crank arms are a game changer! I’d recommend checking them out especially if your legs are on the shorter side. I have them on both my bikes now.

Also not in the photo: the Drive II wheels I got from Elite Wheels in China. They took awhile to get here since I ordered the rainbow finish. Ordered them after buying the frame and used the ROVAL wheels from my Aethos in the meantime. I was amazed at their relatively low price because I’m accustomed to having to buy wheels separately rather than as a pair which would probably have cost $2500 or so. My Drive IIs were a comparative bargain at $1300 for the pair and while researching I came across a review site (I think it’s Cyclists Hub) that had a 15% off code so that knocked the price down to just over $1k for the pair 🙀 shipping, customs, and tariffs included! Worth the wait for sure.

Ben and I sat down and figured out what parts I needed. I’m running SRAM RED with a 10/36 rear cassette, ROVAL Alpinist cockpit, super lightweight S Works side open carbon bottle cages, S Works Power EVO Mirror Saddle. I was making payments for the parts but decided just to go for it because life is too damn short especially at 63.

Oh and I also had the frame wrapped, then ceramic coated using a kit I got from Amazon, which protects the finish even more and makes it easier to clean.

The Slowskys!

Just flashed on these commercials. I know they're not exactly genjones but I like to think they were geared towards us older folks.

How do y’all do it? Bibs without cargo pockets I mean.

For years now, probably since 2018, cargo pockets in my bibs (and before that, shorts) have been on my absolutely must have list.

But the selection is pretty limited.

Where do you put everything?

I do really long rides on the weekends with bike spouse (well over 100 miles - we rode for 12 hours yesterday) and consequently feel the need to carry a lot of stuff - iPhone, snacks and hydration mix (just started using a top tube bag for snacks), wind jacket, second pair of gloves, power pack about the size of a credit card w/charging cable) keys, and probably some items I’m forgetting at the moment.

But most of the really good bibs don’t have pockets so here i am asking 😊

TIA!
