For those who have come to realize they have a child who will never live on their own…

When did you realize it? Did you feel despair, grief, something else? And if so, how did you come to accept it and move on? How has your life been with an adult child living at home? Has planning for retirement looked different from the usual? Any advice for others facing a similar future?

I thought this community might like to see these photos of processing flax and drop-spinning 115 years ago in Russia. From the book in the last photo.

I have tried using a drop-spindle in the past, but only with wool. Does anyone know about the stand next to the spinner that is holding her fibers (which also look to me like flax)? It does make sense that some sort of thing like that would be needed to hold flax fibers and keep them straight for spinning, unlike when I was spinning with wool roving and could just pinch it off the larger mass. The stand in the photo doesn’t look easy to use, though, with the fibers being tied down, but maybe I’m missing something. Anyway, I thought the photos were cool!

How do we feel about this dress for a work conference?

The pro is that it’s really comfy and I already own it. My concerns are the busy print, the shapelessness of it and the way that really doesn’t flatter my body, and how short it is. It hits above my knee, and I am a short person. I’m also in my late 40s now, so I’m not sure I should be showing thigh, especially in a professional setting. I would iron it before wearing it, of course, which I didn’t do before I took these pictures.

It’s weird that, after all this, Graham Platner is just going to be, like, a guy we happen to see at Hannaford or WalMart and think “hey isn’t that…?”

Instead of feeling defeated and giving up, hope that all the trans girl athletes go and sign up for their supports in alignment with the sex assigned at their birth.

Let them start competing against boys and beating the pants off them at their own games. Nothing will roll the red carpet out for trans women in women’s sports like the fragile male ego.

Can anyone tell me what this forked needle is used for?

It’s hard to photograph, but hopefully you can see it. This needle is forked at the top. At first I thought it just had a broken eye, but the eye is below the fork, with thread through it. Any ideas?

I got my hands on some local cornmeal, so I chose a recipe from one of my old cookbooks to try it out.

I used raspberry jam. The batter was very stiff, and the resulting muffins were quite dry, but pretty tasty!

I think this stone is so beautiful. The colors in the stone and the carving and the shape… so pretty.

I committed a small, victimless crime this morning

I’ve been planning it for a while. It involved a property right on the main road in our small town. I figured going at 5:45 on a rainy Memorial Day morning was a good plan, as pretty much no one would be up and about. Two cars went by as I was doing the deed, and one was a cop car. They didn’t stop, but they may have noticed my car there where it didn’t belong. The buildings around there probably have cameras, and I have a very prominent vanity license plate. The stolen goods have been incorporated into my landscaping successfully. I assume I have gotten away with it.

Is a player on the Portland Sea Dogs a full-time job? Or do these guys have other “real” jobs? I have no idea what kind of money they make. Anyone know?

I see a lot of posts about whether or not getting an MPA is worth it; this may help some decide. Bachelor’s degree in 2000, master’s in 2007. Eleven different jobs since 2000. Entire career spent in Maine.
