Lichen is 10 months old. We've had him since 10 weeks.
He does NOT like hats. He gets very Pyr protective mode if someone approaches wearing a hat or hoodie. It took me a while to separate this from the fact that he does not like black men. Women and children are fine, as long as they don't have a hat, but men he just doesn't like.
I thought at first it was the hairstyle he was responding to, but after more careful observation it seems to be both.
I can't really desensitize him because I would never ask someone to put themselves in that position, even if I could think of a way to phrase it that isn't racist.
Anyone have any advice? We've been working on hats by letting him see them, smell them, we put them on then hand to him right away to see it's just a hat. But I'm honestly stumped. There are two black men at the dog park and he's accepted them as extended pack, and just ignores them like he ignores 95% of the humans at the dog park.
He's never charged anyone, just raises all his fur, spaces his front legs out and lowers his head while growling. It's quite impressive to see, and I imagine terrifying for the poor unsuspecting guys.
