City Council Circle Jerk

Galway City Council have entered their parking app into the eGovernment Awards 2026

I don't know which is worse, the hubris of the council in thinking there is anything good about their app, or the judges willingness to accept such dross.

Inflated for 4 months, and counting

I'm too dull to have regular parties. These balloons were put up over 4 months ago. I'll take them down when they have completed their life cycle, which could be a few more months.

Some kind of broomrape

The only thing worth parasitising here are roses. Broomrapes gotta live too, so I'll just leave it be.

The headquarter of Budapest's public transportation company has a parking lot by its entrance, blocking most of the sidewalk.

Bonus: there is a multi-level car park in the next building, and there are two metro lines and many bus/tram lines within 100 meters. https://maps.app.goo.gl/QyeQtSVqw78muc2FA

I stole 2000 hours of time from my employer without getting caught

For many years I was in charge of the time and attendance system, and other IT systems, in my workplace of 1500 employees.

I developed a small intranet app to make it easy for everyone to see who was clocked in, out, out on business, vacation, etc. That info was available in the main system but it was a pain to access from there, so everyone relied on my system instead.

What they didn't know is that I placed some code in the system, to always show me clocked out after 4pm. I'd go home at 4 every day, complete a 60 minute commute, then actually clock out from there. This gave me 5 extra hours each week.

If someone had checked I'd have been fired, but I figured people are lazy and tend to trust what they see on screens like that.

I ran that scam for about 8 years. Week in, week out. A rough estimate is 2000 man/hours stolen.

Ballcock balls-up, but that's not the problem - help!

Trying to replace this ballcock in the small tank in the attic. All feeds are shut off but there is water trickling in from the outlet, well below the valved feed and overflow.

I thought water could only drain out that hole. Why is it filling up the tank?

Honestly, I don't think the ballcock was ever the issue. Now that I see this water flowing in here, it explains why I had a drip from the overflow which is now a trickle.

My major concern is... Where does the water coming in this hole come from? Should it be coming in from there?

My secondary concern is, since I have a new ballcock and the old one is a bit corroded... How do I get the old one off when the threads seem knackered?

Planting for the pollinators

Plant for the bees they said, everyone needs bees. Well, after a few decades of doing just that, I can say the bees are well and truly attracted to my garden. I've now 2 native honey bee hives in old growth Ash trees in my garden, about 20m apart.

I also seem to be acquiring an allergy to bee stings. It feels like I'm being punished for doing the right thing.

This plant in Galway (old Dublin Rd.) has a really tall flower stem, 2m-4m high. The image is from Google Street View, taken last summer, after the flower stem disappeared.

It is flowering now. I drove past it earlier today but I didn't get a photo. The flower head is kinda like a skunky grass plant, but not bushy. Just one big stem per... group of leaves. I dunno what you call them.

Anyway, what is it? I'd love one in my garden, and it clearly survives some battering by the winds.
