Damp wall in bedroom

Damp wall in bedroom

I've lived in the same place for 15 years without any big damp issues, the house was built around 2001. I came back after 10 days away and found the wall behind my bed wet to touch. The humidity levels are the same as before and while there probably isn't great air flow behind the bed, I've never seen anything like this.

If I look at the outside, it's difficult to tell exactly where the bed would be, but it seems dry. Anyone know what might have caused this?

New Carpet Fitted Badly

New carpet just fitted - 2.3k worth - company claims bar is needed against bannister frame as carpet will tear without.
However left with no bar on other sides of banister frame. Bar that is fitted isn’t even flush with the corners. Any carpet fitters could advise if this is standard. It looks absolutely awful

How to fix this transom window

We're renovating our house and we have 3 of these transom windows that need to be fixed. The windows have moved down and there's a gap above them.

Anyone know how I can get them out?

The pictures are from the hallway and bedroom of the same window

Thermostat wires

I have an thermostat in my kitchen for an old electric storage heater that I'm removing.

I'd like to use the wire for an small extraction fan which is quite close.

The wiring is a bit strange though. There's one double wire, black and red, and a single wire, black, going into it.

Can I just wire in the fan with the t and e? it's 2.5mm.

Best way to fix this terrible plastering?

I've just bought my first house (very excited!) but now getting into fixing the terrible DIY work of the previous owners. There's a lot of half-assed plasterwork like this with exposed mesh.

What's the best approach here? Sanding back and re plastering over? Plasterboard on top? Scrapping it right back to the wall? Any and all suggestions welcome.

It's a 1950's former Dublin Corporation house with mass concrete walls.

170bar enough to power wash a house?

Hi all, looking to power wash and paint the house and came across this ryobi power washer. Will 170bar do the job to paint it or is a petrol one necessary? Thanks!

Recommendations for shelving/ floating shelves

Does anyone here have a recommendation for shelving in Dublin/ Ireland, preferably floating shelves?

I'm looking at closing out a small project in my house, and the only results I can find online link to the likes of Etsy, which I'm a wee bit sceptical of. Happy to buy direct from an Irish provider.

Ruling out the likes of Woodies/B&Q, due to quality issues.

Any advice for buying and installing a water filter on an electric shower?

It runs off the mains (no tank) but i don't think that matters.

Reason: skin issues, and want to make sure anything that could be irritating my skin is removed from the mains water

Has anyone had similar issues or success with certain brand or type of filtering product?

Is this something I can install myself?

Help - Replacing vanity, waste trap is too short

Hey everyone! After getting some advice from my previous post, I decided to replace my bathroom vanity myself.

I could use some help though. The waste trap on both vanities is too short. What’s the best way to fix this? I don’t mind replacing the whole trap if that’s easier than trying to extend the existing one.

If anyone could point me in the right direction, I’d really appreciate it. Even better if you could send me links from Woodie’s or B&Q for the parts I need.
I also need to extend the tap supply hoses for one of the vanities. Any advice on what I should buy for that would be great too!

Bosch Boiler Loosing Pressure Every Few Days

Every couple of days I'm having to top up the water in the system. Doing some research suggests the expansion vessel has failed or needs to be recharged. Could also be the pressure release valve. The picture above shows water collected on the copper pipe outside the house after 24 hours and x2 1 hour cycles of water heating. How DIY is this or do I need to call the professionals...assuming my diagnosis is even right!

Concrete window sill - salvageable or full repair?

Had windows installed, and the already cracking window sill came off during installation. Doubt there's any salvaging the pieces that came off.

Any point in pursuing a partial repair here? Rest of the remaining sill is sturdy, takes my full weight without budging. But the reinforcing bar's rusted, probably cause of the deterioration in the first place.

Any tips or advice much appreciated, TIA folks

Taking out window and flipping around

Had a window installed but we wanted it with the opening facing the flat roof. My thinking is removing it and turn it upside down. Plug up the draining holes and drill new ones... Should be alright?

What Sand to use with cement for laying porcelain tile in garden.

Hi everyone! I’m planning to build a 20mm outdoor porcelain tile patio in my garden.

I know I need to mix a semi-dry mortar bed with cement (using slurry primer on the tiles), but I’m really confused about what sand to buy here in Ireland.

At Chadwicks, they only seem to list Plastering Sand, Mortar Sand, and Paving Sand. There is no standard "Sharp Sand" on the list.

Which one of these is the correct gritty equivalent to use for a porcelain mortar bed so it doesn't shrink or hold water? Or is there another name I should be asking for at the yard?

Thanks a mill for any advice!

A fine start to the day

Woke up to a stressed out dog. Checked on him to find he'd pooed in his bed. Then I looked up to see what had frightened him.

4 year old door, glass spontaneously shattered in the middle of the night. Inner pane smashed so nothing hit it from outside.
