The chef behind Dorchester’s cult-favorite Italian restaurant is opening a second café and wine bar
FROM THE STORY: Via Cannuccia, a small Italian restaurant in Dorchester, has become one of Boston’s toughest tables, and a favorite among the city’s restaurant industry. Now its chef-owner is betting that there’s room for another Cannuccia, but this time in the form of a bakery, coffee shop, and evening wine bar.
Stefano Quaresima, whose 40-seat trattoria has become a destination for the Roman cooking he grew up with, plans to open Bottega Cannuccia in the former Homestead Cafe space in Fields Corner as soon as December. The 30-seat space will shift gears throughout the day: Italian coffee, pastries and sandwiches during the day, followed by apertivo, wine and small plates by night.
The expansion comes as Boston’s Italian restaurant scene is getting bigger and more corporate, while Quaresima is purposefully small and entirely self funded. The new restaurant is also the product of an unusually community-driven process, with the landlord asking neighbors to weigh in on what should fill a vacant storefront.
“I really want to create a space outside with some tables and chairs, like a small bistro you’d find in Paris. That’s the picture I’ve had in my mind,” said Quaresima in an exclusive interview with the Globe.

‘People are leaving’: Independent restaurants in Boston are at a tipping point - The Boston Globe
google.comYour favorite Boston meals in pictures?
I don't know if the picture does it justice, but I had a sausage pizza yesterday from Union Park Pizza on Newbury Street that made my heart glad. The crust-to-topping ratio was perfection. The moment I saw it, I knew I wanted to take a picture. But as you can see, even though my phone was right next to me, I could not wait another thirty seconds before taking a bite, so the picture had to wait.
People are always swapping restaurant recs here, but I wonder if you guys have had a favorite meal that you can comment on by also posting your picture of it? If you're a home chef, I'd enjoy that too.

Wonder sucks and is the bane of my existence (rant)
Basically the title is my whole post, but I feel like Wonder is slowly taking over the city and it's slowly driving me insane. I've made the mistake of eating there on three different equations (first time on purpose, next two times I was duped), and each time was worse than the last. The food is literally inedible and doesn't even remotely resemble the restaurants they claim to have on the menu.
Worse still, every time I order from a food app, I specifically need to make sure I check that it isn't some Wonder B.S. version of whatever I think I'm ordering. I don't really care about the business of ghost kitchens in general, but the deception of dangling a good restaurant name in front of me and serving me whatever excuse for a meal they have concocted is basically fraudulent.
Also I just moved to the UWS and there is a Wonder a few blocks from me, so now every time I search for food on Google, Wonder magically appears in the results, even if it literally has nothing to do with my search. I was looking for diners in my area, and Wonder popped up. DINERS! I feel like I'm living in the upside down.
I know there are bigger problems in the city (and the world) than Wonder, but I just needed to get that off my chest.
Best pizza in MA
This year’s summer vacation has begun. My family and I are on the hunt for the best pizza in MA. Our goal is to hit up 50 mom and pop shops from the Berkshires to the Cape and Islands. Most will be day trips with some local exploring on our adventures. We have setup a scoring system that we will each use to find our families favorite Massachusetts pizza. We have a list of establishments that we want to hit up but definitely looking for suggestions. Our journey can be followed on IG @tdac.thebestof.eats if you want to follow along.
Today we went into downtown Groton after school let out for summer, and hit up Bruno’s Pizza for a great local pie. This is going to be a delicious summer. Only 49 to go.
We are not selling anything, just trying to have adventurous summer in our great state.
*Edit: Maybe I should have titled the post as “Looking for the Best Pizza in MA”. I am in no way saying Bruno’s is the best, kind of thought the post explained it but maybe not. We are on the hunt for the best. Some will suck, some will be middle of the road, and some will be great.

bostonglobe.comWhat I ate on my two days in Boston.
Took a quick weekend trip to Boston with the wife. Here’s what we ate while we were out there.
- Sunny girl (Sunny girl sandwich add sausage)
- Neptune Oyster (Lobster roll)
- Boston Sail Loft (Clam chowder and tuna sandwich)
- Mike’s (top) & Modern (bottom) - (Vanilla filling w/ chocolate chips)
- Tonino (1.Pizza Bianca all 3 sauces, Countneck Clams , Jersey Asparagus, Pepperoni & Hot Honey, Tallegio
Cappeletti) - Clear Flour bakery (Strawberry jam kouign amann, Chocolate chunk cookie, Muhammara & feta cheese croissant, Ham & cheese croissant, Pistachio almond chocolate croissant)
- Sando Table (Chicken katsu and tamago sando)
- Yume Ga Arukara (Spicy cold niku udon)
- Oasit Sweet (Mango snow & Bi Co Moi)
- Sarma (Brisket Malawach, infamous fried chicken, cauliflower fatteh, black sea cornbread, harissa bbq duck
- Row 34 - (Cheeseburger with fried oyster, cornbread, lobster roll)
We enjoyed just about everything we ate out there. Wish we had more time (and more room to eat) but it’ll have to wait until next time I come back.
A couple things. I really enjoyed my meal at Tonino. It was probably my favorite meal of the trip. Definitely memorable for me. Of the two lobster rolls, I preferred Neptune overall but loved the bread of row 34. I know Mike and Modern are very much touristy but I felt like I had to. It’s a small sample size, but I preferred Mike’s vanilla cream type filling as opposed to Modern vanilla custard. Everything we ate at Sarma we liked, but that black sea cornbread really stood out for me.
The "50 Best Restaurants in North America" - no restaurants in Boston or New England included
The "50 Best Organization" has announced their Top 50 Restaurants in North America, with no entries in New England. I wouldn't read into it too much as there is probably some nefarious money + politics that go into making a list like this, but just an interesting data point.
