My baby just turned 4 months.
For the first 3 months of his life was able to be put down awake or drowsy and fall asleep. Since starting to try to train him on crib naps, he has never been able to do that during the naps, so I’ve had to rock him to sleep. He wakes up at 30 minutes crying but still tired and refuses to be put back down, so I hold him the rest of the nap. That has trickled over into bedtime now and he wants to be held all the way to sleep at the start of the night.
He used to be going down without a problem at night and now he wants to be held and cuddled all the way to sleep before he’s put down. He’s still sleeping through the night (minus a feeding or two) now which is good.
I feel like I’ve messed up his sleep associations or something but I really don’t know what to do. Listening to him cry is so hard for me but I’m wondering if I need to just let him.
Any advice or tips would help. I just want to do what’s best for his sleep and ours.
When did your baby stop being able to effortlessly just fall asleep on you when they were tired for a nap? He won’t contact nap on me and just drift off when he’s tired anymore I have to practically rock or bounce him to make him nap. I’m scared working so hard on crib naps for him that I created that for my son. He cries every nap time going to sleep in my arms fighting it and I watch wake windows carefully so it’s not that. I just feel like I failed or messed up his ability to be flexible and nap wherever.
This started within the past month and he’s about to turn 4 months on Friday.

My baby is wonderful. He's been a great nighttime sleeper from the start. We can put him down awake and he will go to sleep for the night. He's about to turn 4 months and is sleeping from about 7:-45-7 ish (sometimes wakes between 5:30-6:30 to eat).
Naps are another story. He will crib nap if put down practically asleep. If we try putting him down awake he will cry and scream and is inconsolable or will play until he's extremely overtired and cries. I follow wake windows and sleepy cues and everything for him. I can put him down asleep and if he stirs and I have my hand on him for a minute he will go to sleep sometimes, normally during the first two naps.
BUT without fail every single time, he wakes up at 30 mins. There's been a couple of times where when he stirs if we put our hand on him he can connect the sleep cycle, but mostly he wakes up crying and needs to be held the rest of his nap. It's getting hard spending 3 hours everyday in the dark holding him.
He has not been able to calm himself down from crying independently before.
HELP! Any advice or experiences is welcome. :)
