Does engaging with online hate speech and racism, or even acknowledging it, serve only to strengthen it and validate it?
I'm hoping I used the correct flair for this question here. I've been having multiple discussions in other places, other subs and through some Facebook messages and texts between friends, about what is happening in online spaces these days. Things have been bothering me, for various reasons, and some of it is because I'm admittedly diagnosed autistic. While not always, sometimes I view social interactions as you might through glasses that aren't your prescription. I kind of know what's going on but the finer details escape me. This is especially where I am personally concerned as I don't feel truly connected or a part of things so I feel like an outsider or someone reading a book(just text, devoid of emotion except for what's explicitly stated).
So I want to learn, and the recent conversations have made me concerned that I'm contributing to the spread of racism, hate speech, and general online malignancy just by acknowledging it exists. I'm not saying that the solution is to ignore it; you should absolutely not ignore hate speech or threats in online spaces. What I'm saying is that by downvoting it here on Reddit, or engaging with it on Twitter, or acknowledging it by publicly sharing it and increasing it's validity might be serving to strengthen it.
The example I will use is actually probably my fault, and I think I might be contributing to strengthening online hate speech by mocking it. The example is that of actor Idris Elba. I think he's absolutely fantastic on screen with an amazing presence, and I do honestly think that if he had the role of James Bond he would absolutely nail it. Someone elsewhere suggested it previously and it stuck in my mind because I can imagine him putting his own spin on the character, because he's good at his damn job as an actor. However, I know fan-casting him publicly in certain roles leads to people flipping out based on his skin color. And knowing that, now, makes me very concerned that my actions in public spaces are only serving to make those same online spaces more dangerous for people.
I'm not sure where to go with this beyond what I've stated but I'm considering deactivating or deleting all social media, not to free me from it but to free it from me. If my actions are serving to hurt the black community generally or specifically, please help me to understand and see how I can still be in those online spaces without contributing to the hatred. Thank you, all of you.
Tim Travers and the Time Traveler's Paradox, just some thoughts
I really don't know where to start with this movie because I don't really want to share spoilers but I know that's likely to end up happening anyways.
I randomly decided to watch this because I really enjoy time travel movies and recently re-watched Frequently Asked Questions About Time Travel so I was already in the mood. I expected something dealing with paradoxes based on the title, obviously, but what I ended up watching was some really weird shit. Once the movie got started in earnest I had no clue what was going to happen next.
As each odd event happened or theory presented I tried thinking about it but couldn't finish before the next oddity happened. The pacing was just perfect, or so it felt, and the absurdity of the whole thing just kept snowballing. And then Keith David showed up. No, seriously, he did. It was awesome.
I really suggest people watch this but don't go in expecting a movie with high production values or that tries to seriously tackle the subject; it's an absurd comedy that honestly looks like it was probably incredibly fun to make because it was fun to watch.
Juggernaut versus Mjolnir
Not Juggs versus Thor but just the hammer. Let’s say Thor places the hammer on Juggernaut’s chest, maybe while Juggernaut is trying to get up or something. From what I recall, Juggernaut is empowered by Cyttorak and he’s considered stronger than Odin so would the enchantment hold up? Is Juggernaut more of an Unstoppable Object than Mjolnir is an Immovable Force?
Does life increase entropy?
I’m hoping this is an acceptable question. Comparing a theoretical universe without biological or metabolic life(not sure if that’s actually a thing) and ours, is ours going to “end sooner” due to heat death because of the presence and activity of life?
How long could digital storage last with near no loss?
I had an idea for a short story where a human being’s mind is digitized into a storage medium and ends up very far in the future. I intend to gloss over some details because it is fiction, however I was curious how long information could stay stored without loss. I’m assuming that the threshold for loss is very slim because a human mind would be complicated, so I want to use the longest lasting current storage medium where it stays 99.9999% intact as long as possible.
Is that even doable on a longer timescale like thousands of years?
Clean Up The Wasteland
Look, with Meat Week upon us I know you're all excited to expend countless amounts of ammunition turning poor critters into chunks but there's a problem. That problem is litter, and it's because you're not looting your corpses. When you don't loot your corpses the game despawns the corpses eventually but seems to toss all the contained loot onto the ground. This has been leaving piles of loot all around these Primal Cuts locations and quite frankly it's getting out of hand. Just a little bit ago I was busy trying to get some prime meat for the cook out and we had just seen a sheepsquatch appear when I saw these little piles of garbage all around from previous encounters. Well, that just couldn't stand and I threw a few shells into old spiky and then began to clean up the mess.
I was so engrossed in my cleanup efforts that despite my joy at finding multiple piles of quills to make shards with, I didn't notice Bigfoot spawn in until he was right behind me. Bigfoot! And what could grab my attention like that, that I wouldn't notice the danger? Well my friends, it was Med-X. Med-X, that's right, the needle thingy.
Come on, what if a kid found it and instead of becoming a promising future scientist he descends into a spiral of addiction and loss where his slight glimmer of hope repeatedly gets re-lit and then snuffed out by the realities of life? Or he might've gotten tetanus, who knows?
I think we need to clean up the wasteland folks and make sure that our future progeny have the best chance to pass along their decaying genetics.
Looking for suggestions on chili crisp without beans in it.
I've recently fallen in love with this stuff and have tried three different brands. The first one had no spice, the second was Lao Gan Ma, and the third was the normal Fly By Jing. I liked them all but the last two weren't visually appealing to me. I know, how pedantic right? I'm neutral on beans in general but love mukimame, however there's just something about the sauce having whole beans that I don't like.
Don't get me wrong, I'll still buy and enjoy ones with the beans because I love new flavors but I'm looking for general suggestions on flavorful chili crisps that don't have full beans in them. I'm ok with them using fermented beans in their creation because I'm sure that natto flavor is yummy but I just don't like the beans.
If anyone has any suggestions for a good chili crisp, hopefully traditional and with varying degrees of spice, without beans I'd be happy to hear them. Thanks in advance!
[TOMT]Live action movie or tv show, probably horror or science fiction, where the protagonist is stuck in a time loop where he, an Asian student, keeps getting beat up by classmates until he memorizes and wins every fight.
