3 Modded Wugouts Progress

A few weeks ago, I posted that I had bought 3 OD green Wugouts from Walmart.com that I had intended to try some new modifications I’ve been curious about, along with some that I’ve enjoyed doing in the past. Three of my closest buddies are knife carriers, but not really knife lovers the way I am so every time we get together they always want to see what I’m carrying. They all carry the same knife to work that they do everywhere else so I grabbed these and put some work into them so that they could have a beater knife that they won’t feel guilty about abusing on the job, but is also something a little different than what everyone else is carrying around.

Here’s what we got at the moment. Kinda scooped out the scales a bit to get to the thumb stud easier. Added the pock-mark/golf ball texture via Dremel. Then I made my own “traction coating” after being such a Topps fan. What y’all think? less

NKD; “Bezubin” (dafuq?) pivot lock?!

Ok guys this whole “budget banger” phenomenon is really starting to feel a little silly. So I’m ADHD scrolling through Amazon’s “You might also like…/Customers who bought this item also bought…/Similar products…”, where sometimes I’ll end up like 20-30 links on down the line and have no way of explaining how the oddest product ever arrives at my door for my wife to find and question me about, when I found this little treasure. I’ve never heard of Bezubin, it’s one of those Chinese brand names that none of the logical pronunciations sound quite right for… and the model itself has no clear name. But I saw “limited time deal”, $20, and pivot button lock. I don’t have a pivot button lock yet, so I snatched it. And it’s just silly how much this knife packs for TWENTY DOLL HAIRS. The action reminds me of my Kizer Sheepdog, it’s got the same large caged bearings and same stiff detent. Perfectly centered, no wiggle open or closed or anywhere in between. D2 blade, which I love for my work knives. There’s some obvious finishing shortcuts that reflect the price, as it’s just not perfectly polished everywhere but I let it slide. The G10 leaves a bit to be desired, I’ll definitely add some texture to fit my taste. But all in all… I mean it’s twenty bucks 🤣.

Some mods to a couple of my budget blades…

The OT Valor is great for a $20 knife, but the edges of those aluminum scales were gnarly as hell lol when I get a fidgety flicker I need to be able to play with it during long drives without it wearing a hole in my hand. Ground the shoulders off, said well I come this far, might as well keep on grindin’ (Forrest Gump voice). Added some texture. Then my Praxis, I love this thing. One of my favorites. Added the no-drill thumb stud, definitely ordering a real one to install. Deleted the flipper tab, opened up the index finger choil. All good moves.

One of Eric McCright’s first knives…

Good friends with Eric, incredible human being. Love that McCright Handmade has done so well.

About to put some TLC into 3 Wugouts to give as gifts…

…after I spend a little more time experimenting with my own Wugouts. Finally found the OD green and black Wug’s on the Walmart app, my amigo’s are going to love them. Messing with blade coatings and texturing the scales without making a mess or ruining these $10 treasures 🤣. I’ll post updates.

Ritche is my favorite budget strap manufacturer.

I think this strap gets my Ritche collection to a dozen, and it’s excellent. Wasn’t really shopping for one, but was cruising Amazon and saw that these silicon (rubber, their ACTUAL silicon straps are much softer and stretchier) straps and their 24mm was on sale for NINE DOLLARS. I ordered this orange and black strap (ever since playing Tom Clancy’s The Division I became a sucker for tool watches with orange accents 🤣) and a grey and black one for one of my Duro’s. Even though those are 22mm lug watches, I knew I could make it work. And it’s excellent, especially for an overbuilt diver. It’s thick and dense and clearly tough, but still very comfortable and looks awesome. If you haven’t given Ritche silicon straps a try, I highly recommend them. Their nato strap pack is meh, but their sailcloth straps are truly unique too.

NKD: Remette Cool Whale

This is the first and only Remette I’ve ever handled, so I’m open to the idea that they’ve probably produced some busts in the past. However, if this knife is reflective of the quality, fit and finish, design, and value of the rest of their line… then I’m about to have SEVERAL of them.

Almost all the knives I buy anymore are in the “budget banger” category (Civivi, QSP, Kizer, Petrified Fish, Tenable, etc.) because I still see them as what they are: tools. So I have dozens of knives that any non-knife obsessed individual would swear cost way more than what I paid for them. THIS ONE, however, is kind of in another league. I ran over to Remette’s website when I got one look at the WD107, but as saw that it was sold out I immediately was attracted to the profile of the Cool Whale and it was $60 so I snagged it. It’s insanely sturdy, overbuilt, heavy duty. Shaving sharp 14c28n. It slaps open and locks out HARD. My only gripe is that some of the edges on this carbon fiber (possibly CF patterned G10?) are unnecessarily sharp; I fidgeted with this thing for my 1.5 hour drive today and it’s definitely worn some tender spots into my hand. I’ll definitely soften those up a bit with the Dremel at some point.

NKD: My first Tenable…

Fenrir with a (beautifully) coated Nitro-V blade and (beautifully) anodized aluminum scales. I’d been praying for an excuse to come along so I could see what the Tenable hype is about. Father’s Day was close enough and my wife is somehow incapable of opening my Amazon wishlist to see what kind of gifts I might actually enjoy receiving so I just beat her to it 🤣.

Initial impressions: for $60, this thing is incredible… I agree with the thousands of others saying the exact same thing. It’s deceptively overbuilt and sturdy. The blade is wicked sharp and pointy right out of the box. The anodized green is so pretty, and this diamond texture is one of those tactile addictions like Civivi’s Qubit where you just can’t stop swirling your fingertip across it. The pivot is a bit stiffer than what I’ve seen in so many videos, opens with a blocky “clank” instead of a clicky “snicht” but hopefully that’ll work itself in. I suppose I’ll be snagging many more Tenable and Kansept knives going forward.

Also had a brand new release from Remette arrive today… this Tenable is awesome, but what Remette put together for $60 doesn’t make sense.

I love these lug adapter kits, they bring together two of my favorite watch elements: G-Shocks and nato straps. I bought the bumper cage because it was cheap to buy one for every G I had in my drawer at the time (they came out to like $2 each), but this is the only one that looked good in my opinion. Huge Batman fan, so I’m always happy with a black and yellow theme. I picked up this particular 9052 on clearance at a Walmart in Port Arthur, TX for $12 🤣. If it’s not on my wrist, it’s in my pack somewhere as a backup.
