What are examples of characters who got dumb for comedic effect? Such as Chrissy Snow or Joey Tribbiani?

If the show did not change directions and temporarily move the cast to Hollywood (and later Europe), do you think it would have lasted as long and held the lasting impact it has? I feel that the stories would have started getting tired if they had remained in the New York apartment. Sending them to Hollywood opened a whole door of possibilities and gave them so much more to work with.
