back then when widescreen formats like 70mm were new, projection booths were located way up high in the rear of the theater and the formats demand a deeply curved screen, so the print itself has the image distorted to accommodate for the high angle so it would un-distort itself when it hits the screen

it had somehow barely occured to me that this was a problem back then
