German vs Italian

I remade the post to be more specific. Do you prefer the gothic German style of armour or the Italian one? I’m referring to the armours of the late XV century. I’ll use two pictures to give an examples but you can use other examples if you want. We are taking about aesthetics not wich one is superior function wise (it wouldn’t be a fair argument because of how and when they were used and for what functions). The illustration where made by Graham Turner.

Strange wrapper…

Hey there. I went to Mantua to check the beautiful Italian armours there. I noticed this detail after visiting the place 2 times😅. This Armet here has a wrapper, but it only covers the throat, it doesn’t extend up until the nose. I was really surprised to see it, I invialo didn’t notice it was there. What do you think? The armour looks like your “standard” Italian one, so focused on usage on horseback.

Maximilian and non togheter?

Hey there! I was this doubt about armours in the early XVI. I know that Maximilian armour was widely used in the Italian wars period but I don’t understand if everyone was using it as their style or if it still was a regional thing. For example, Francis I is shown wearing a Maximilian armour in the Leeds reconstruction of it. Was there a French style without fluting at the time or not? I’ll show you a picture of a macoliamo and a non maximilian so you can understand better the kind of armour I mean when I say not Maximilian (might get the period wrong, if I do please tell me).

Style?

Hey there! Quick question. Does anyone know what armour should be worn with this bicoque armet? (can I call it an armet? The side plates are a bit weird…). My first quest was a kastenbrust harness, but I’m not sure.

Gothic armour from?

Hey there! I found these images on Pinterest and I really like the armours (especially that backplate). To me they look like German armours, but I can’t find the source. Does anyone know where they’re from? Thanks!

Mail+Greathelm Info’s:

Hey there! I’m studying armour form the late XV and I think I have a pretty good knowledge of it! A friend of mine would like to get a kit that gives you that iconic look with the great helm. So basically an armour dated from 1250-1320. Now, I know that generally speaking, the hole body is protected by mail, and you would wear a cervellier/open faced bascinet under your greathelm (and over the mail covering your head, coiffe? Can’t remember how it’s written). He sent me this picture for reference, he said it’s dated 1320. Has anyone got some infos/sources that talk about how these knight were armed, he’s also curious about heraldry, so tell me if you know any cool surcoat (again sorry I don’t know the exact term for this period). Thanks! 🙃

Hey! I’m studying the late XV century and I’m curious to know this: is a crossbow more powerful than a longbow? Ignoring the rate of fire, training exc. I don’t know any type of crossbow specifically, so I’d say something a crossbow men with a pavise would use. Is there a big difference “damage” wise? To a armored opponent ideally? Thanks
