Yellow stuff on gills- what is it? (rescue axolotl)

Hi partypeople! I recently posted about Soap! Our little rescue girl. See my previous posts if you want to know more about her. This one is about her gills:

What on earth is that yellow stuff covering them? Is it an infection? She looks pale because she is in a methylene blue bath atm :) She has a lot of open wounds, so she will get the baths until those wounds are closed completely. So I guess if it is an infection it will get better anyway thanks to the met blue?

She can flick her gills, but the flicks look asymmetric and... bad. I will put a video I took a few days ago in the comments. These injuries happened from being cohabbed with like 8 other axolotl in a tiny tank at our local LFS. she must have already been weaker than the others, they ate her alive :/ She is very active and eating well!

No arm? No problem!

Soap, the axolotl we rescued yesterday, seems so unbothered by her missing arm. And all her injuries. And barely existing gills. Maybe she didnt get the memo that she is sick and injured.

Girl has been swimming around her tank all day and all night: exploring, hunting, prowling. She checked every nook and cranny and looks at us with such curious eyes 🩷

Since this wasnt anticipated we only have our basics from when we had our girls in tubs, but the fans are keeping the temps below 20°C so thats nice!

We will get a tank stand, filter and chiller next month. I anticipate she will be here for half a year maybe? And after that I think I will want to take on another rescue... But first soap is the priority :)

I know I will cry when we rehome her but she deserves a home thats all about her <3

Just rescued this little lady! (TW: missing limb)

Hi everyone! We just went to our local LFS who also has axolotl to buy worms.. He was out of worms so we looked around a little if we wanted a new plant or else... thats when we saw her. As you can see her arm has been bitten off, she is missing some toes, I am not sure if one of her hind legs may be broken (it looks a little twisted to me, but it may just be an injury or and old break. She uses it normally). Also her gills are obviously not well.

She weighs a measly 89 grams, at 25 cm long.

!!!!! In the first pic you can see her in our girls tank! I kinda forgot about quarantine 😭 she is not in there anymore, and insead in a spare 50 l tank we had lying around.

She will NOT become a permanent member in our household, she will be rehomed once she has recovered. This isnt a time sensitive issue for us. She can stay as long as she needs until we find a suitable and loving home.

I do have the knowledge and resources to care for her, but I am always open for opinions/ ideas/ advice! While I know the theoretical part I lack experience in the practical

Hole in cheek?!

Hi everyone, this is Bubbles: our little rescue albino girl!

We had her and her sister for about 2 months soon, so we still notice new things about her every day :) Due to the feeding angle we almost never get to see her from this side while we feed.

I noticed when she opens her mouth a small hole appears below her lips where she has a very light and bumpy pigmentation (it is not from an infection of any kind, that can be ruled out!!). You can see into her mouth through it, as you can see in the first pic.

To her backstory: she is 2,5 years, was blind for most of it due to the extremely bright tank lights of the previous owners. In her time with us her sight came back!! And her gills are getting fluffier by the day. She has lots of scars and had rather sparse gills from being bullied a lot. She also ate a LOT of gravel over there. it was rough and sharp gravel.

So my question is if anyone else has seen something similar? and if there are any measures I can take to help her/ if there is anything I have to do. Also I would like to know how this even happens?!

I didnt put the sick tag, because she is eating, acting, and looking healthy everywhere :)

This is what a cycled filter-sponge looks under a microscope

I was allowed to bring a sample of my filter gunk to the lab today at uni and it was so worth it 💯 also now very grossed out at me touching this stuff with my bare hands. Tank has been cycled for ~2 months now. So not veeery old :)

Btw in the water sample I saw... some algae. Nothing more. Otherwise there would be another post about it but alas.

Who wants to draw our daughters?

Hii 🫶 We recently got a little corkboard to sit on top of our daughters (axolotl) tank. We really want some nice art of them. "nice" can be the silliest sketch or the prettiest painting :) sporadically I have already posted them and gotten two great pictures which will soon go up too 🙏🌼

Their names are Lukara (the spotted girl) and Bubbles (the albino). They are rescues and 2.5 years old! Recently moved into their forever home (60gal tank) <3

We are so looking forward to everything!! And also willing to answer any questions of course :)

Lukara and Bubbles moved into their Forever-Tank <3

Yesterday we finally did it: the big move :) Before that it was two awful days of putting foam in, then removing foam, then putting more foam in. But it was worth it, the new foam floor is looking SO good <3 The girls seemed to really like the foam in their temporary tank and I am so anxious when it comes to them I simply didnt have the courage to put sand in. Also I know Bubbles ate a lot of gravel at the previous owners, so I think theres a good chance she would eat sand as well.

The new tank has a total of 240 l of which ~200 l are usable (according to the max fill line), 160 l are currently filled, so the chiller does its work properly. the floor area is 0.48m³. I think its obvious we kinda ran out of decor on the right side"" for some reason its also the side they love the most.

Both girls went exploring yesterday, after sitting in the corner underneat the filter for an hour. I woke up to several floating plants and a dislodged thermometer today ;) they are now sitting in that corner again, looking very guilty ;)

I can't wait to see them explore more!

I am going to be a grandfather to 50-100 bladder snails!!

my bladder snail, Hannibal, who I rescued from our axolotl tank as it was cycling, laid eggs. Which also means I cannot put off making a tank for her any longer-

They will share that tank with some shrimp soon!!

How to make sure a new tank is safe?

Hi, we got our new Juwel Rio 240 l last week, and we are finally putting it all together next weekend. How can we safely check for leaks? Is it even needed if its a brand new tank? The thing is huge so it's not like we can put it in the shower to fill it and test for leaks...

It may just be my anxiety, but I am so worried that the moment we fill the tank that it will just. explode. water everywhere. Or a massive leak. Is that even possible? I live in Germany and we have some pretty rigid laws on aquarium construction- and I know Juwel is also a big and respected brand. But something in my head just panics when I think about this huge amount of water.

For info: we already have one tank, but we are now its 5th owners and its too small for our two axolotl :) They deserve a palace and we want to give them one. I also had a lot of anxiety when filling our current tank, and guess what it turned out fine!!

I would be very happy for any advice or reassurance you can offer ❤️

DIY tank divider?

Hi everyone :) I want to get a tank divider for our new tank, it would need to be 40x40cm ideally. Its mainly for feedings and for when we are away from home! The girls are absolute cuddlebugs but the moment food enters the tank they try to find it and every feeding (except one) one nips the other. While it is very soft and has never resulted in injury or visible stress I would just like to have them separated while I feed them in the future. They both deserve to chill during feeding time :)

Unfortunately most dividers I see in this size are 30-40€ which is crazy in my opinion for a piece of plastic with suction cups. this is more expensive than our damn filters.

Does anyone know how to get a cheap one? Is there a trick? Or can I maybe make one myself somehow with cheaper materials? All help appreciated 🙏

Lukara sitting on the filter

After pooping miss girl had a lot of energy and decided to sit on the filter for a bit (not more than a minute) it was such a strange sight seeing her peek out of the water <3 I dont think she did this before, as she also seemed a bit confused on how she got there lol.

She then squeezed herself in the space behind the filter (I keep it open because the girls sometimes swim up from under it to chill there), swam in front of the filter output, got spooked by the flow and zoomed all the way to the opposite side of the tank.

I love her so much <3 such a silly girl with so much energy

Bubbles has worm :)

She sat like that for 2 minutes until she remembered she should maaaybe swallow that worm finally

u/LauseRulez — 1 month ago

toebeans!

despite having an entire tank at her disposal, Lukara looooves just sitting in tight spots pressed against the glass. We usually find her sleeping like this in the morning🫶 very silly girl with her chicken legs

She also got a new hide recently and sat in it for an hour. Then she pooped in it and so far has not looked at it again. What a diva!

Maybe on the 74th try she will be able to smush herself into the crevice?

Had to redecorate a little because they will be in that tank a few days longer and I wanted them to have some more walking space. They have been up exploring for an hour now xD Lukara still has trouble grasping the concept of "I can't go this way"
