25M, only earning member of my family — looking for some guidance and validation on my financial situation

Hey everyone, this is probably my first post here. I’m 25M, working in a private company, and I just wanted to share my financial situation and get some honest opinions on whether I’m on the right track.

A bit of background first, since my financial journey has been heavily shaped by my family situation.

My dad passed away when I was around 2 years old. We left our paternal home about 14 years ago due to family conflicts and have been living in my maternal grandfather’s house since then with my uncle’s family. There have been conflicts there too, but we haven’t really had the option to move out.

Growing up, my mom supported us by giving tuitions and doing freelance work. We’ve never really had a financial safety net or any inheritance to rely on.

After graduating in 2022, I started working with a salary of ₹12k/month. I switched companies after about 7 months and have been in my current company since then.

My salary progression has been:

- 2022: ₹12k/month

- 2023: ₹26k/month

- 2024: ₹42k/month

- 2025: ₹44k/month

- 2026: ₹56k/month

Since it’s a private company job, there’s always some uncertainty — today there’s a job, tomorrow there might not be.

I do have ₹3 lakh health insurance coverage through my employer, though I know I shouldn’t fully depend on employer-provided insurance.

Current financial situation

I’m the only earning member in my family.

When I started working, our bank balance was around ₹4 lakh.

Over the last few years, I’ve tried to keep my expenses low and save as much as I can. I’ve definitely cut back on personal spending quite a bit, apart from essentials.

Currently:

- Total corpus: ~₹15.5 lakh

- Mutual funds: ~₹3.6 lakh

- ~65% liquid/debt-oriented

- ~35% equity

- Overall MF return is around 7.92% (obviously this keeps changing with the market)

- Remaining corpus is mostly in bank/safe instruments

- No loans or EMIs

- CIBIL score: ~762

- I use two credit cards, mainly for personal expenses, and always pay them off on time

My monthly expenses are around ₹10k–12k for basics like groceries, food, and bills. On top of that, I spend another ₹4k–5k on clothes, lifestyle, and misc stuff.

So overall my expenses are still pretty low since I don’t currently pay rent.

Over the last four years, I’ve only received about ₹85k in total bonuses, so I haven’t really depended on bonuses for saving.

Inheritance / property situation

There’s not much I can realistically expect here.

On my father’s side, there’s very little property, and I don’t expect much due to family dynamics.

On my mother’s side, there is some property, but it’s far from the main road and not very valuable right now. My uncles aren’t greedy or anything, but they’re also unlikely to sell it. And honestly, we don’t really want to depend on or live with them either because conflicts happen quite often over small things.

So practically speaking, I consider my inheritance to be almost zero and I’m planning my life assuming I won’t receive anything.

What I’m planning

My main goal right now is to get a place of our own.

I’m thinking of buying a 2BHK in the ₹20–25 lakh range within the next 2 years.

Marriage isn’t really on my immediate radar. Maybe after 30.

The main thing I want is financial stability for me and my mom. I don’t want to repeat the kind of uncertainty we’ve grown up with.

At the same time, I’m not sure if buying a house that soon is actually the right move or if I should just keep building my corpus for a few more years.

I’m also not very deep into investing. I don’t really get time after work to actively track stocks, which is why most of my mutual fund allocation is on the conservative side and only about 35% is in equity.

What I’m looking for

I just wanted some honest guidance and validation from people who are more experienced with personal finance.

Given my age, income, family responsibilities, ₹15.5L corpus, low expenses, and the fact that I’m the only earner:

  1. Am I on the right track financially?

  2. Is a ₹20–25L 2BHK in the next 2 years realistic/sensible or move to a 1bhk in 10-12L range?

  3. How big should my emergency fund be, considering I’m the only earning member and work in a private company?

  4. Should I increase my equity exposure or stay conservative for now?

  5. Should I prioritize buying the house or keep building my corpus for a few more years?

  6. Am I missing anything obvious in my financial planning?

I know ₹15.5L isn’t a huge amount, especially since I’m responsible for my mom as well, but given where I started, I’m honestly pretty proud I’ve reached this at 25.

Would really appreciate honest feedback — both on what I’m doing right and where I might be going wrong.

Looking for switch in different domains

Hey all, I've been looking for a domain change rn with a better pay and exposure. I'm currently in AML compliance domain with QA experience working for a BPO company (not calling/chatting we work with global financial institutions to support their compliance operations) I am currently holding around 4 yoe. But the pay and the exposure is on lower side. I'm currently having INR 52k pm ($530 appx) monthly, and the exposures is really nil cause client service works have 0 exposures these days and due less payments I'm not expecting much from the domain. I need opinions which domain could be better for me I'm mostly looking for roles in financial/banking services. But up for opinions.

***Also these days I'm trying to applying for different domains but got no callbacks.

4yoe, Aml Compliance Quality assurance

Hey all, I have been working for last 4 years in this domain got experience in aml kyc compliance, Quality assurance, Team training. But rn I'm having no luck for getting interview calls. I've applied around 100+ jobs only in AML. But got only 5 calls 3 interviews 1 offer which is way below the market standards. I'm kinda stuck with the bpo tag (not calling/chatting obvio) I'm looking for multiple options like shift to Consulting, aml Compliance in GCC, IA or whatever which atleast pay me well and I've a good learning about the overall industry not sticking with aml work of a client. Though I had chance to work with global FinTech and banking client but in managed services you know how frustrating this is..... I'm looking for the experienced folks to have a look at my resume and give their opinions.

Looking opinions to move abroad

Hello all, I am almost 25 years old average person who did b.com in 2022 then doing a job and almost have 4 yoe. I'm in a banking compliance outsourcing company. Actually my father expired while I was around 4. Then my mother somehow struggled and paid for my studies. I was an average student. About my financial background I have no owned home, the house which my Father has it was grabbed by my uncles and cousins. I'm living for almost 14 years in my maternal grandfather house but due to property issues and all my they always try to fight with us everytime due to this I always have anxiety. And due to my mother's ageing she is getting more depressed and having mental issues (not mad or something but she getting angry, anxious and cry sometimes) by seeing this I'm also getting sad and depressed. I started working in 2022 then till now increased my monthly take home from 12k tp 52k monthly. But for last few years I'm seeing the changes in the market job are getting shrinked, vacancies are freezed. I'm not in that condition to start studying for CA/CS or prepare for govt exams. I know car driving, repairing small electrical items or lil plumbing pr cooking. I am saying these because if it might help to let you all know my skill other than the corporate ones. Maybe not now but in the distant future around 40s or 50s I'm seeing myself getting trapped as a failure. Recent times I'm trying hard to get a better salary by staying in my domain as the other domains are not even giving me chances to enter or move to aborad to work n earn by how atleast I can keep my mother mentally better in her own flat/house to live peacefully. Not thinking about marriage because it's costly these day from getting marry to have kids. Atleast to live the life in a vetter conditions I'm looking for all the possible options. I need everyones advices.

**** See you might see my other post where I might seek opinions for different scenarios don't take me as wrong. I'm really confused about my life these days that's why I choose this platform to get opinions or suggestions. My background or the scenarios are all true. If you have any suggestions feel free to join the discussions. I am also trying my best to help the community with my experiences if anyone seek for any help. Based on your experience if you have any story to share I'm also looking forward to hear that. 😊

24.5 M CTC

I'm 24.5M with around 4 years of experience, from a commerce background and currently working in a non-tech role. My current CTC is ₹7.6 LPA (₹7.2 fixed). Lately I've been wondering how people around my age and experience level are progressing in their careers, especially given how difficult the market feels right now. Between layoffs, hiring freezes, increasing competition, and salaries not growing the way they used to, it seems like a lot of people are rethinking their plans.

I know everyone's situation is different and comparisons aren't always useful, but I'm curious to hear from others. Where are you in your career right now? What decisions helped you move forward, and what would you do differently if you could start over? Are you focusing on switching jobs, upskilling, certifications, business, higher studies, or just staying put and riding out the market?

Would be interesting to hear real experiences from people in the private sector, non-tech roles, tech, finance, business, or anywhere else. Maybe we can all learn something from each other's journeys.

24, Finance Graduate, 3.9 YOE in AML/Compliance – Looking for Career Direction and Honest Feedback

Hi everyone,

I'm 24 years old, based in India, and come from a lower middle-class family, sole earner. I graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Accounting & Finance and currently have 3 years and 9 months of experience in the AML/ Banking Compliance domain.

Over the last few years, I've worked across insurance, banking, and fintech projects. My experience includes KYC, CDD, EDD, high-risk customer reviews, transaction monitoring, merchant onboarding, and SAR quality control. Currently, I work for a managed services company, supporting high-risk SAR teams across multiple regions.

My current CTC is ₹7.6 LPA (Approx $7900 yearly). Recently, I cleared interviews for a role at PwC, but the maximum offer being discussed is around ₹8.3 LPA (Approx $8600 yearly), which doesn't feel like a meaningful step forward considering my experience and current compensation.

For the past few months, I've felt that my career growth and earning potential have started to plateau. I'm not unhappy with compliance as a field, but I'm trying to understand what the best long-term path looks like from here.

Some options I'm considering:

- Moving to foreign banks or large MNCs with stronger AML/compliance functions.

- Transitioning into financial crime, fraud risk, sanctions, forensic investigations, or related areas.

- Exploring entirely different domains (Audit, Consulting, Risk) if they offer better growth, learning opportunities, and compensation.

- Upskilling through certifications or additional education if it genuinely improves career prospects.

I don't have an MBA from a top institution, and I understand that may limit some opportunities. However, I'm willing to put in the work, learn new skills, and invest time if there's a realistic path forward.

I'd appreciate honest feedback from professionals in AML, risk, consulting, banking, finance, data, or any other relevant field:

- What would you do if you were in my position?

- Are my salary expectations unrealistic for my experience level?

- Which career paths would offer the best combination of growth, stability, and compensation over the next 5–10 years?

- What skills or certifications would make the biggest difference?

I'm looking for practical advice, not validation. If you think I'm overlooking something or making a mistake, I'd genuinely like to hear it.

Thanks in advance.
