Scope options for Alberta | magnification? | price point?

Hello,

I am looking for a scope for a 270win that will eventually be moved to a 6.5creed.

I hunt in areas with dense shrubs, the occasional pushed/driven deer, and a lot of ag land edges.

I'd estimate that I shoot anywhere between 50 or 80yards out to 300-400yards.

I have been looking at the Leupold vx-3hd and vx-4hd lines. I like the sound of the CDS-ZL (that I would wait to use on my personal rifle when I get it).

My big questions are:

Is 3.5 or 4 kinda high for a low-end?

Is the extra $400-$600 worth the step from the 3hd to 4hd? (I've got 20/15 vision with my glasses if that makes any difference)

While I am of the "buy once, cry once" philosophy, I also know there is a point of diminishing return.

When do you get to "thats a really solid scope" and whats the point of "Oh, this is very slightly better"?

Thanks folks!

Savage axis w/accu trigger - 6.5 creed?

I can borrow my FiL's 270Win Xpr, used it last year to take a whitetail.

I've been tossing around the idea in my head of where to start, what to get etc... I have a CZ457 in 22lr, that's my practice and small game rifle.

I saw on an auction site, a Savage axis (I think maybe the II?) 22" stainless with a scope. Now if it goes for like $400-$450 after buyer premium and all, is it worth it?

My other path I could take, (already checked with him if I could do this). Buy a decent scope around the $1k mark, put that on the 270Win for awhile, and then upgrade to a Tikka in a few years?

What is truly the best bang for the buck )all-rounder or) goose gun?

I am mostly looking for a good goose gun, but if it's also an all rounder, great!

My FiL has a 20ga mossberg 500, I've heard that it's not really enough for geese.

I've been going down separate rabbit holes, comparing pros and cons, different price points, etc...

So as much as I love the 'vibe' and simplicity of an O/U, I don't know if it would be quick enough for snow geese. I am relatively flexible with my budget, but I would like to stick around $1000.

I thought about semi-autos, beretta a300 or winchester sx4. Then my main question, the pro and cons of a semi auto vs a pump, is it better to get a good pump shotgun or a semi-automatic?

The main use for this shotgun would be for shooting geese in the farmers field where I live. Mostly Canadian goose, but also the odd straggle group of ross/snow geese.

I'd also be using it for practicing skeet/trap shooting. And maybe using lighter loads for rabbit and hare (which is why I know I'd need to spend more on the semi-auto).

TL;DR: What action, brand, price point- shotgun is the best bang for the buck?

Time to upgrade? I9-10850k rtx2070 ---> RX 9070xt?

Hey,

I am looking at upgrading my current pc and selling my old one but dropping in my GPU.

Selling the old pc for $500 and a really old pc (for my wife to play friendslop games on couples night)

I was looking at getting the above mentioned RX 9070xt (probably the asus prime, or sapphire pure if I can find one for $1000CAD).

I am looking to find out what people's perspectives are on upgrading, and what GPUs are worth it.

I am hoping to spend a bit more now and not have to upgrade till quite a few years down the line (I've had my 2070 for 8-9 years now).

So if I'm only going to get 4-5 years out of a gpu whether I spend $600 or $1000 on it, I'd go with the less expensive one.

GPU Suggestions?: Bang for the Buck. $1000cad

Hello,

I am looking at getting a new GPU when there is a sale.

I've been out of the PC building space since about 2020.

I have an I9-10850K

32g ram

Looking for a GPU upgrade.

I was looking at the 5060ti, 5070, or 5070ti. I think my happy price range is the 5070 area, around $1k canadian.

I haven't looked at the AMD GPUs yet as I don't know how well they work alongside the Intel CPU.

If AMD would be a better option, I am 100% willing to go that way.

Thanks in advance!

City Boy accidentally starting a small homestead.

Hello folks,

I wasn't exactly sure where to put this. But I needed to share some of my thoughts and experiences.

-----Background-----

I was born in a city and lived there for the first 18 years of my life. I trained as a chef for 10 years moving quite a bit usually to a city or a large town.

I always thought that living in a city is what I wanted, I met my now Fiancée around two years ago and that was our plan. Well we ended up moving into an older farm house with her brother (has autisim and has really struggled to live alone) and her dad. All of us split rent.

-----Past two years-----

Well my father in law hunts, and being from a Canadian city; it wasn't really something I ever thought I'd do. As a chef though I had mentioned that being around dead animals for a good portion of my day, I wanted to be a part of the whole thing.

We all went out hunting last November and I tagged my first white tail. Hung it for about a week and a half before butchering. Most incredible meat I have ever eaten.

We also have had chickens for about a year and a bit now. Raising different breeds — started with Lohman Browns, and then my fiancee found more breeds she liked. Recently we got our hands on the chickens that started our interest, Ayam Cemani and Zombie chickens. We have had enough eggs for ourselves and family.

I have decided my longterm project is to 'create' what I want to name the Alberta Cemani chicken — effectively and Ayam Cemani (all black) with a peacomb to avoid frostbite during our hard winters.

My fiancee has taken up hatching turkeys and guinea foul (mostly as pets). With any luck we'll have a breeding pair of each.

My second project is meat rabbits (first step is convincing the fiancee its a good idea). I have heard they are one of the best sources of meat available for the amount of care and money.

We recently expanded to a larger coop. I also have to fix the other side of the building as it is quite sad.

And all of this is done while I am working my way through college at nearly 30.

-----take aways-----

City living is nice for certain things and works for plenty of people. I have found that I don't think it works for me.

And if anyone finds this and is wondering if they could start a homestead. The answer is yes. If I am able to do this, nearly anyone can. The biggest thing I can say, reach out to neighbours on social media to ask for advice for your area. Community helps and often can lead to some really beneficial trading and bartering.

To anyone who's made it through this.

Thank you.

And I hope everyone has a wonderful day!

Experience with Atlantic Pepper Seeds?

Hello,

--------------background (can skip)----------

I have been learning the art of gardening for a few years now — I specifically love peppers!

I started growing peppers when I was living in Ontario a few years ago. A couple years ago I moved back to Alberta and have had less success (Specifically around the Olds/Sundre area)

My wife and I bought a greenhouse for our tomatoes and peppers this year — we both struggled with our most wanted crops (though she did better with her tomeatoes 🍅 than I did with my peppers 🌶)

------------------ Question -------------------

I know it can be important to get seeds for places closer to your climate. So mckenzie seeds is one of our go-tos.

But Mckenzie doesn't have the best selection of peppers. I grew APS seeds in Ontario with great success.

I am wondering if anyone has any experience growing these seeds in Alberta and if they are worth going with?

Thank you so much!

Have a great day!
