A 1-page Rules-Lite TTRPG for quick old school top-down dungeon runs!

I owe the LoZ franchise for my love of fantasy. My first foray into TTRPG design was a system based on Breath of the Wild, which I went unfinished as other projects caught my interest.

For Legends of the Dark World, I stripped that concept down to a rules-lite format and wrote a simple template on how to create dungeons in the classic Zelda format.

I would say I owe Zelda a love letter, and the time will come for that. For now, this is my love note!

Which NPC stat block do you prefer?

  1. Layout A
  2. Layout B
  3. Layout C
  4. Layout D
  5. Layout E
  6. Layout F

EDIT: A and C are getting a lot of positive feedback. I have some follow-up questions:

  • Do you see yourself using the trackers at the bottom of the page or not really? My intention is for GM's to print these out or write in the book if they like.
  • Do you prefer the stats displayed as plain text?
  • Do the dice icons do anything for you?
  • Do you like the inclusion of the flavor text?
  • Are there any features of the other layouts you would bring over to your favorite layout?

Some additional context:

These are NPC stat block pages for Arcana: The Pursuit of Mastery

This is about as complicated as NPCs get in my game, so simpler ones will have fewer abilities; some won't have ability points at all, but all of them will have the name, abilities, dice pools, defense, aid modifier, and movement speeds.

Tell me what spell you wish you could cast IRL and I'll tell you how you can craft the spell in Arcana: The Pursuit of Mastery

3 Rules:

- You can only affect what's nearby

- You can only directly affect a handful of people

- The spell lasts just a short time (but there is a butterfly effect)

After 4 years of dev, I got to shoot an actual play 1-shot of my spell crafting RPG!!

I met Brandon Mace while running demos of Arcana at AwesomeCon in D.C. in the spring this year, and he invited me to run the game on his channel, Questionable Experience!!

The game went great, even in the super short format (90 minutes of play edited to about an hour), and they ended up solving the final puzzle (something of a trolley problem) in a way that saved both the treasure and the dude protecting it! Britt, Andrew, and JB were a joy to play with. They jumped into the roles of the pre-made characters perfectly, and all of them made great moments for the session.

In a game where players can craft any spell imaginable with the tools at their disposal, you have to expect the unexpected because it's SURPRISINGLY RARE for a problem to be solved the same way twice!

Anyway, if you're interested in how spell crafting in Arcana: The Pursuit of Mastery works, the first few minutes of the video are a super brief rundown. The game itself gets going at the 8-minute mark!

Check it out on the QXP YouTube channel!

Any tips for writing a quick start adventure?

Extra context: I've been running games for 10+ years, but I never run modules or pre-made adventures. For me, the joy of running the game comes from laying down the train tracks week by week.

The game I've been developing for a little over 4 years now has just been released in early access. I feel the need to get a quick start adventure made to encourage players who have purchased the game and joined the Discord to run the game.

I already have a 4-6 session adventure made, but I'm having some trouble formalizing it and making it into a usable document lol. I'm already at 40 pages in my google doc and it still just feels like my usual scattered notes 😰

Happy to share what I've been working on for feedback, DM me and I'll send a link.
