The Odyssey Soundtrack Analyzed by henrylovesmusic

The Odyssey’s soundtrack is truly incredible, which is why I recommend taking the time to watch a great analysis of it by the up and coming YouTuber henrylovesmusic.

He has done similar videos on the Obsession and Backrooms’ soundtracks, which were also really good. This video hasn’t gotten much attention, which I think is really unfortunate because it is very well done.

I highly recommend!

E.T. was Incredible!!

So about a week ago I decided to watch E.T. for the first time. I’ve always heard high praise for it, and yet for some reason never decided to watch it. I was expecting it to be really good and among Spielberg’s best.

But HOLY SHIT. This was INCREDIBLE! Everything about this film was amazing, ESPECIALLY the score and cinematography. The score. That FUCKING score man!! It belongs in a museum!!!

I never cry for movies. Never. But this got me good. And it wasn’t because I watched as a kid and cried due to nostalgia. It’s just that damn good.

Instant 5⭐️

How do you all feel about it?

The End of Oak Street: Very Underwhelming

2, maybe 2.5/5

Very, very underwhelming and forgettable. None of the “scary” scenes are earned through suspense or tension but instead rely on jumpscares to trick our bodies into thinking we might be scared. The characters are very weak and underwritten to the point where I didn’t care about what happened to them. There are some really bizarre choices in dialogue that neither break the tension (as there is none) and yet still make you go wtf (just lowercase though). There were parts that literally giggled at how bad it was, which I wasn’t expecting.

I will say, the production quality was very good and watching the film in IMAX helped ALOT. The Dinos looked pretty good and not like the CGI slop a lot of modern movies have. Was quite impressed.

I don’t think this movie was made to be a new Jurassic Park, but I couldn’t stop thinking, “I wish I could change the channel and put on the original Jurassic Park.” I instead got the vibe of an attempt to make a fun summer film that you could watch with your family or significant other. I don’t think it accomplished that at all.

All in all, the film is watchable, but I will likely forget about it by Monday and probably will never watch again.

Just saw it again. Holy Shit!

I saw for the first time in normal 70mm, and while I enjoyed it, I wasn’t the biggest fan of the quality. Decided to see it again in 4DX, and the screen and sound at my local theater (Regal Deer Park, NY) was INCREDIBLE.

I already loved the movie before, but this time I got the chance to really appreciate how beautiful it is. This and Project Hail Mary (which I didn’t get to see in theaters but hopefully will get the chance to do so around awards season) are my movies of the year!

11/10

Best Theater to Watch The Odyssey?

What’s the best theater on the Island to see the Odyssey? My local theater is Regal Deer Park, which is pretty good, but I wanted to know if there is any better theaters to see it in.

Favorite scene?

There were a lot of scenes I liked, but the scenes of the Fall of Troy were phenomenal. Especially the part during Odysseus’ monologue, where you can see and hear the destruction and desecration of Troy. The cinematography was incredible, especially the shots where you moved with the soldiers moving through the streets like a tsunami. That scene was the biggest “Wow!” I had for a movie with several.

I also think Nolan did a great job conveying the theme of Xenia, and why it’s important to treat strangers, whether as a host or a guest, with the same respect you’d give to a god. The leveling of Troy caused Zeus to separate the Greek fleet on the way home, leading to the events we see in the movie.

You really felt that a part of Odysseyus, and humanity in general, really lost something after that (I’m aware that was normal for the time). That scene and Damon’s monologue did an incredible job in expressing that, and I can’t wait to see it again on my rewatch.

Obsession on the cusp of passing Sinners to become highest-grossing original live action film of the 2020s

3rd viewing. Worth it, but definitely will be last in theaters.

I enjoyed it, but started to feel a little “obsessioned” out during this viewing. Nothing will replicate the first viewing, which scared the daylights out of me. Still worth it though and I still believe Obsession is among my favorite movies. Will probably watch again on Thursday when it starts streaming, just to see how it is at home.

The suspense built around Nikki was so well done!

Something i noticed upon rewatching Obsession was the early suspense built around the real Nikki and who and what kind of person she is.

The opening scene of Bear spilling his guts on his feelings for Nikki was done really well. Without knowing anything, you find yourself sympathizing with Bear, as we all have felt this way about someone before. The way he describes her also creates an immediate affection for whoever this Nikki character is. We’re told more about her caring nature (I.e. her checking up on Bear after his grandmother died when no one else did) than her good looks (plenty of subject matter there), and so without even meeting her yet, Curry Barker and Micheal Johnston have caused us to fall in love with Nikki and hooked us into the movie.

The subsequent phone call scene does this even further, and the two scenes together establish a foundation for the ‘entrance’ of Nikki during the pub scene. That shot of her face as we finally get to see a full frame of this Nikki character (i couldn’t find the specific one online) who we’ve heard so much about is so well done and completes the affinity we have for Nikki in like less than 10 minutes.

That shot reminded me a lot of the entrance of John Wayne in Stagecoach or Zac Efron in Hairspray. It’s like watching a supernova explode in the sky. You know you’re seeing something special, even if you can’t quite put your thumb on it immediately. BOOM! There’s your next movie star!

I think this opening did a really good job in making us care about Nikki later on, and really helped elevate the movie beyond a typical “careful what you wish for” or “crazy girlfriend” flick that is more appropriate for a Lifetime movie. Just one of many aspects that make this movie so F***ING good.

NY Times | Obsession is a Surprise Blockbuster. Who Gets the Profits? | Gift Article

Interesting read.

I understand that those who buy the rights, distribute the movie, and risk the movie being a box office bomb should get the bulk of the proceeds. I also understand that the artists and individuals who made the money probably deserve more than they were paid

Why did you love the movie?

Given the existence of this sub (which now has hundreds of thousands of members), I think it’s clear that many other people have come to love the movie like I do. I can’t stop thinking about the movie, and I’m curious as to why many of you are in the same boat.

I can’t really put my finger on why I’ve come to love it so much. I love so many of the elements of the film (acting, score, cinematography, writing, hell Inde’s presence lol), but I’m not sure what specifically has really triggered the dopamine hits that I get when thinking about it. It’s almost like they made a wish to make myself (and many of you) to “love Obsession more than anything in the fucking world.”

2nd time watching. Generational Classic

Just finished watching Obsession for the 2nd time. May watch it again, but we’ll see (theater these days ain’t exactly cheap).

Something about this movie man. I can’t really put it in words, which you could argue is the best way to describe it. It wasn’t as scary or creepy the second time (almost felt more like a drama with the occasional jumpscare). I think that aspect allowed to me to really appreciate all of the filmmaking aspects that a layman like me can recognize (I’m no filmmaker).

Everything about this film feels perfect. The acting. The score. The plot. The cinematography. At one moment you’re laughing, and the next you’re scared shitless. I love movies, but I can’t remember feeling the same way about a movie in the theaters like Obsession. It’s like being high on a drug, and all you want to do when you get sober is go back to the theater and experience that euphoria again.

To me, this is a generational movie. Something I’ll be telling my grandkids (that’s if I have any, maybe grand-nephews and nieces). This is Gen-Z’s Blair Witch, and I’m proud that my generation lead the way for this movie to reach the heights it has met (of course there are other generations that love it as well).

I don’t want this experience to end, but unfortunately it will.

Given that a whole subreddit has been made about this movie (I don’t know if that’s common or not), it seems that others agree, which makes me very happy. I’m glad to be part of a community of fellow obsessors, and I hope you all help me appreciate the movie even more than I already do.

Is it true that nuclear power is too expensive, even more so than natural gas? That’s one point made in this article, and wasn’t sure it was true given I’ve often heard the opposite.
