"Neutral oils" for baking?

Which ones?

For quickbreads and muffins.

I read avocado oil on one thread; I used it, it doesn't taste neutral to me at all. I just tasted it straight from the bottle, doesn't taste neutral. My olive oil tastes more neutral than that.

I see safflower oil mentioned, I can't find that at all.

What else is neutral? I try to avoid canola oil, do I have to go back to that?

Thanks.

Encouraging growth in my scindapsus cutting?

I was given a rooted scindapsus cutting in mid May, potted in a tall plastic cup (with drainage).

It has done absolutely nothing. It had 2 leaves then, it has 2 leaves now. Are they just slow?

A few days ago I visited the Aroid Greenhouse at Garfield Park Conservatory in Chicago. That lush tropical greenhouse was slathered in various scindapsus crawling all over the place. It was inspirational to me.

Mine looks healthy to me, though I know nothing about these, nor their needs. I don't know the cultivar.

Should I repot it (in what?), or wait for something more to happen? I don't see any roots through the plastic. EDIT: I just saw a root coming out of one of the drainage holes.

I have it next to a west facing window in my kitchen. I put it there just to keep an eye on it. I can move it to a location with a plant light.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Are magazines acceptable donations?

I get some good magazines, like Smithsonian. Are these acceptable to give to local Little Free Libraries?

Or would they just be considered waste paper?

Thanks.

Free swimming in the N or NW suburbs?

I'm in Buffalo Grove. I like to swim for exercise, but not in pools. The chlorine makes my eyes burn.

I grew up swimming in an inland lake, so that's what I like best. Warmer than Lake Michigan, and not as rough.

When I googled, several of the places listed no longer permit swimming (like Diamond Lake Beach and Independence Grove forest preserve.

Any hidden gems out there? Thanks.

Katherine Grey and Edward Seymour: really married, or not?

I always thought both of them had to be really hopelessly disorganized to "lose" their marriage certificate (not to mention have only one witness to their wedding, and that person seriously ill).

I know Elizabeth claimed they were not married, and thus their 2 sons illegitimate. Making Katherine guilty of moral turpitude and unworthy to be Elizabeth's heir, and the sons ineligible as heirs due to their illegitimacy.

But then, it was in Elizabeth's interests to claim there was no valid marriage. With Elizabeth's spy network, it wouldn't be that hard to have someone search out the certificate among their possessions at court, and either conceal it or destroy it, before Katherine and Edward got wind that the Queen suspected them (and Katherine's pregnancy).

Therefore, I wonder what historians think about this.

Also - Katherine, as the sister of extreme Protestant Jane Grey, and descended from Henry VIII's younger sister Mary (his choice of line named in his will after his own children), apparently had a lot of support in Parliament to be named as heir.

I wonder why Elizabeth was so dead set against her? Was it just the choice of a Seymour as husband? One would think ANY Protestant heir descended from Henry VII would be preferable to a Catholic one like Mary Queen of Scots or Margaret Douglas.

THanks!

Abysmal table manners for an 8 year old

We kept thinking it would get better, but it hasn't.

She was a picky eater who had to be virtually force fed until a year ago. Then she discovered that she liked some foods (pasta and rice, mac and cheese). She's still underweight and inches shorter than her classmates, but so was I at that age, and I was not picky.

If it's a food she likes, she shovels it in like she's been on a desert island. She chews while still adding more, until her mouth is stuffed to overflowing. She wants all her food in a bowl versus on a plate, so she can spoon it in faster.

She drinks water in huge gulps, swallowing air, then burps loudly. This gulp and burp will happen at least 5 times during a meal.

Our son was not like this - so this is a new experience. All he did was drop his fork on the floor 5 or 6 times, knock his glass over, and want his food items kept separate. That was a snap.

We've tried explaining that it's not a race, to slow down, she can have all she wants: but she ignores us.

She's not rushing off to do anything after dinner. When she's had enough she pushes her bowl away, then has a normal dinner time conversation.

How can we gently start correcting this? This is an age when other kids at school are teasing. She already has some personal habits that draw negative attention.

Thanks.

I'm rewatching for perhaps the third time. Currently in season 7. Barnabas is asking Julia to release Willie from Windcliffe Sanatorium so he can assist Dr. Lang.

I missed Willie! His frantic energy. His persistence in protecting Barnabas from his worst impulses.

My favorite character. Why was he gone for so long? Did John Karlen have another commitment? Was Willie extraneous to the storyline right before and after the 1780's segment?

Thanks!
