Moving to Oakpark

Me and the wife are moving to Oakpark from a Northwest neighborhood of Chicago. My wife is a bit concerned due proximity to Austin, but from what I understand “The Island” part of Austin is decent.

Any thoughts about this area of oak park? Is it safe? We like the proximity to the blue line but just want a vibe check from fellow redditors.

Very Creepy Man at Nordstrom Rack

Hello everyone this happened around 2 weeks ago now and I’ve just been forgetting to post which isn’t good of me but at least I’m posting now.

Anyways, on Thursday August 6th I went to Nordstrom rack in Skokie on Skokie blvd. At this store the women’s shoes are near the kids clothing section. As I was walking to the shoes I kinda clocked this guy hanging around that area and we glanced at each other but I didn’t think anything of it. I start looking through the aisles and in the first 2 aisles I’m really taking my time and there’s other people in the aisles with me. I finally get to the third aisle still taking my time but this time I’m alone in the aisle and I find a pair to try on. No joke as the heel fully gets on my foot, the man pictured above almost runs up on me excitedly and starts rambling.

He starts rambling about how “there’s a ring on his finger that stuck” and that “he’s tried everything to get it off” something about his “jeweler giving some advice” literally just rambling about his stuck ring and he has this really excited yet nervous demeanor. And as he’s talking I’m digging in my purse for some hand cream, I offer him some hand cream and he’s like “no I’ve literally tried EVERYTHING even lotion, lotion doesn’t work” and that he “knows this sounds crazy but a women’s heel would just really work at getting the ring off his finger.” And at this point I already thought he was weird from the very second I saw him in the store, I thought he was weird when he came up to me, so then just to confirm how weird I think this guy is I ask “so you need my foot to be in the heel?” And he confirmed and literally says “yes I just know that would work, a women’s heel to pry the ring off and honestly you might not even be heavy enough for it.” And yeah when he said that it immediately confirmed my suspicion and I told him no because I wasn’t comfortable doing that. After I rejected him his mood changed completely and his face dropped and turned around quickly and left.

I reported him to a manager and the manager reports to asset protection but it seemed like they didn’t have any urgency to catch this guy.

Long story short for the last part lol, I went outside to call my boyfriend I was so so angry because people tend to think I look younger than I am (I’m 21) and who knows how old this creep thought I was. And if he’s ever done this to anyone else before older or younger. I was also pissed because he thought I was dumb enough to fall for this sick trick. Anyways so as I’m outside I catch him LEAVING THE DSW. YES ANOTHER SHOE STORE. I found his car and that’s his license plate. As I’m outside an asset worker comes out the store to talk to me and he even says that that man would come in to another location in Vernon Hills and do the same thing; pretending to record women and girls, tricking them into the weird heel thing, and just being a disgusting creep.

So yeah! Just a heads up for this guy, I made a police report but there’s nothing they can do about it I guess PLEASE BE SAFE and don’t be afraid to cuss a pedo out. 👍

Buying in South burbs

Can someone tell me why it’s so cheap?

I grew up in the NW burbs where I have maybe one or two options in my price range. Bordering counties don’t even have much at affordable prices. Then I look at the south burbs and Redfin is flooded with decently priced options. Is it worth considering?

Please be real with me. This isn’t our forever home, just a starter home so being able to sell in the next 5 years or so is important too.

Flock cameras going up at dispensaries

I frequent Altius dispensary in Orland Hills. Today I popped in to pick up and noticed a new addition. A brand new flock camera on the property of Joey’s Red Hots. This camera is not facing out over 159th street, it is pointed directly at Joeys drive thru and the dispensary parking lot right next door. When I asked the dispensary workers about it, they didn’t even know it went up. I walked out with their manager to show him and saw his unease about it. I also called Joeys. If you live in the area you should too. But any way this is just a warning because it seems posting these up to point at dispensaries is the latest flocking trend. You’re probably being tracked everywhere already but now they are preparing to take notes on what you’re buying too.

Hardwood Refinishing

Does anyone have a company they’d recommend for refinishing/refurbishing hardwood floors? These floors are probably 75+ years old.

I need a full sand and refinish alongside a few repairs to warped and loose planks.

Added bonus would love someone who moves the furniture! Thanks :)

Montessori of Lake Forest families

We’re a family with two kids (3.5 years and 4 months) living on the North Side of Chicago and starting to look at North Shore schools and neighborhoods.

We toured Montessori School of Lake Forest and really loved it. It stood out to us a lot, especially since we’re strong believers in Montessori education.

The challenge is that we originally expected to move closer to Highland Park, not all the way up to Lake Forest. From HP, the commute to MSLF looks like it could be 30–40 minutes each way, which is doable but not ideal given our work schedules. Our current Montessori school is only 5 minutes away, so this would be a big change.

I’d love to hear from MSLF families:
● What has your experience been like at the school (teachers, community, administration)?
● Do many families commute from Highland Park or nearby, or does that get exhausting over time?
● Did you feel it was worth choosing your home location around the school?
● How easy has it been to build community/friendships through MSLF, especially if you didn’t already live in Lake Forest?

We’re trying to figure out whether it makes sense to prioritize the school and move farther north, or stay closer to Highland Park and accept a longer commute.

Any insight would be really appreciated as this is a big decision for us. Thanks!!

Recs for junk yards that have old, working cars?

I just bought a 2003 toyota matrix and I want to get another old car. They are more reliable, and i won't have to make a car payment. Anyways, I want to buy another one to fix up. Maybe fix up and sell, or fix up and sell my toyota. Idk. Just wanted to check out options and such before making a decision. If anyone knows of any junk yards, im in Orland. Thanks!

Fort Sheridan Cemetery help

I’m hoping someone who may be going to the Fort Sheridan cemetery may be willing to help me. I’ve called a few numbers trying to locate information for a specific plot and have yet to get anywhere.

Here’s the situation: Before my mother in law passed she found a letter from her mother and father’s belongings dated 1 March 1951 by the 2d Lt., QMC Supervisor of Mortuary Operations. The letter states that a headstone has been received of this date for your deceased daughter’s grave. Section 12, Row J, Grave 34. Last name Anderson.

If you’re visiting and could get a picture of the headstone my wife would be eternally grateful. She doesn’t know the name of the deceased or age, this would had been her aunt.

Thank you.

P.S.
We live in Florida or we would definitely go ourselves.

UPDATE: I got a call a few hours ago from a nice gentleman that works at the cemetery. He drove to the headstone and took a picture for me.

Special thanks to u/old-uiuc-pictures for getting us the link to the marker. Not sure why the wife and I couldn’t find it through the same site but at least we have it now.

Thanks again to everyone who offered to go there on our behalf. My wife says thank you very much for your willingness to help. Thank you!

Basement Remodel in north burbs?

I live in Glenview and my basement is roughly half-finished, but with veeery dated flooring/walls/drop ceiling. We’re looking to have the above ripped out, put in some luxury vinyl flooring, drywall, and a newer drop ceiling. Roughly 30x20 space.

Can anyone recommend any reputable companies for this, and/or what you paid for it? I’ve heard that the big names in the basement biz are overpriced…

AMA with a township assessor today 12 - 3pm

Hi Reddit! I'm Andrew Richter, the West Deerfield Township Assessor, and I'll be here from 12 PM to 3 PM today answering your questions about property assessments, taxes, exemptions, appeals, and anything else related to the local property tax system.

A little background: I'm a Deerfield native and have worked as a commercial real estate appraiser for the last 25 years. I earned the MAI designation from the Appraisal Institute in 2014 and was elected West Deerfield Township Assessor in 2021. Since taking office in 2022, I've also earned the CIAO designation from the Illinois Property Assessment Institute.

Property taxes can be confusing, and there's often a lot of misunderstanding about how assessments are determined and how they affect your tax bill. My goal today is to answer your questions, clear up misconceptions, and help residents better understand the process.

Ask me anything!

Edit: I'm hosting tax appeal seminars at the Deerfield Public Library this summer. The first one is Monday, August 24 at 7pm. Find more information here

Edit 2: Thank you all for joining me. If you missed the AMA, feel free to message me with any questions you have.
