Cleaning out flooded basement by
Yesterday my parent’s basement flooded with about 3 feet of water. They are on high ground and there’s storm drain in the back yard so normally it’s ok. Sometimes during heavy rain a small “river” forms on the backyard but the water kept rising. It eventually got to the window wells and just poured in. This never happened before.
Im going to see them today and assess the damage in person. Fortunately everyone is OK and this is just stuff but I’m totally at a loss about what to do or even where to begin.
Like many people the basement is a a storage area. My parent’s life was down there. A lot of my life was down there.
There was an oven and second refrigerator and chest freezer, both were floating on their side, door open spilling contents everywhere. Books, photos, Christmas tree and holiday decorations. Shelves were knocked over and stuff was just floating around.
Can anything be salvaged? How do you do it?
Do you get a giant dumpster and just throw everything away?
