My Broken Binding “Mortedants Peril” Came!

Been cutting back on buying non-sub special editions but this one was too good to pass up. One of my favorite dust jackets of this year.

Which of these July books sounds good? FL Adult, Illumicrate, Owlcrate Adult

I can only renew one of these this month (or none)— July is kinda expensive for me with other stuff & I also really want to pick up the Everlasting. Anyways, help me decide between the three books! Spoilers for the books/ their synopsis' ahead to be warned!

I hope i can post this here & not in the comparison thread, since this is about the picks and not the boxes themselves.

FL Adult [>!The Winged Game!<]: This book sounds like a sports-romance with a fantasy backdrop. I do like sports romance books, but I've read sooo many this year (due to a certain hockey show) & am a bit burnt out by them. I do think I'd enjoy this pick, but I also think I'd enjoy this on Audio a lot more. I enjoyed this authors other series, but it was a 3-3.5 star read for me. The main reason i'm considering NOT skipping is that I'd rather keep my skips for things I know I won't enjoy rather than for something I know I will enjoy.

Owlcrate Adult [>!These Immortal Truths / Peaches and Honey!< ]: I've heard many good things about this book from back when it was indie published— over 14k on Goodreads. The artists for this book seem super stunning & I've been liking alot of the Owlcrate designs this year. It's being compared to Addie LaRue which I LOVED. The only thing stopping me from getting this book is that this book isn't what I typically read.

Illumicrate [>!A snake among swans!<]: I really enjoyed this authors first trilogy— a bit generic ("classic fantasy") but done really well! The plot for this one also sounds a bit generic but I think >!Hannah Kaner!< is a really talented writer. However, I did see the spoilers for this and I wasn't blown away. It's still a beautiful book, but I was a bit disappointed (especially since the artist has done FL Katabasis and TBB Susanna Clarke). I think I'd enjoy this book but I also don't know if I'd read right away, especially since I just read the Unicorn Hunters which also has a lot of court politics. I do want to pick this book up eventually but I also think I can get it secondhand later.

Or maybe just skip them all? They're all books that I want to read but aren't a must-read, and I have a lot of books on my TBR lol .

Edit: I did not realize how many of us had all three subs (+ TBB lol). Glad to know I'm not the only one whose deciding between the three. I'm gonna see if I can find a preview of the OC Adult book, but I'm leaning towards skipping FL now and getting IC or OC.

Potentially a new iron edition

Neal Shusterman posted this on his TikTok. Doesn’t really confirm anything but it might be implying a redesign. Looks like a good candidate for an iron edition. Looks like a good candidate too considering there are more books in the series now.

Comparing my 3 Editions "Of Blood And Fire" : (OG TBB Special Edition, Inkstone, TBB Press)

Hey all,

My last edition of "Of Blood and Fire" came today. I'm not planning on keeping all three copies of the book (4 if you count my print-on-demand indie that I got from Pango). However, I thought I'd show everyone the difference between the three editions I have.
Some key differences.

  • Dust Jackets: The OG Special Edition of OBAF has a different dust jacket featuring the dragon egg and one of the characters, while the Inkstone and Endless Editions have different colorways of the same cover.
  • Naked Hardcover: All three have foiled hardcovers.I nksone only has foiling on the front.
  • Naked Spines: All three have different spine designs. What irks me on the Endless edition one is that it doesn't have the Series Title/ Number on the spine like the inkstone one.
  • Edges: Inkstone has designed sprayed edges, while the other two have gilded sprayed edges.
  • Book Size: The Inkstone Edition is slightly larger in width than the Endless edition. This means that you probably won't be able to mix-and-match editions in the future since they don't fit flush on the shelf. This is most noticeable on the top-down view of the books.
  • Endpapers: All three books have the map of Epheria on the endpages, however they all have slightly different designs.
  • Tip-ins: Inkstone & the OG Special Edition are signed and numbered, while the Endless edition is just signed
  • Illustrations: The OG Special edition has a mixture of single-page black-and-white illustrations & double page full color illustrations. The Endless Edition has full-color single-page illustrations and chapter headers, and the Inkstone has black-and-white single-page illustrations and chapter headers. The Inkstone and Endless Editions have the same illustrations, while the OG SPecial edition has different illustrations.
  • Page Design: The OG special edition has smaller margins, a special page number, and different page headers than the Inkstone & Endless Edition. The Endless edition has a mild paper-texture effect applied to some pages to make it look like an older book.
  • Slipcase: The OG special edition had an optional slipcase as an add-on. It does fit the other two books, but it is a tight fit since the OG Special edition is a little thinner.

Final Takeaways:

All three editions are beautiful, and you really can't go wrong with any of them. However, because they are slightly different sizes, I would not recommend mixing and matching the Endless Edition with the other editions (Inkstone, Waterstones, US, etc.)

The Inkstone Edition is great for those who need sprayed edges on their books or if numbered books are important to you. However, it is noticeably lower quality than the other two.

The Endless Edition is probably the best edition to go with. Especially if you can find the first print run with the colored illustrations and page headers. I'm not sure if the subsequent print runs will have those features, so it might be worth it to find a first print edition second hand.

The OG Special Edition is the most exclusive of the three, but don't get it unless you're rich lol. It is very similar to the quality of the Endless Edition. If you don't have it, you're not really missing out. It is not worth the $900 dollars (or however much it's going for).

I know the production delays left a bad impression of the endless edition; however, it really is the best balance of cost & quality of the three, as long as you don't care about the exclusivity of it.

Love when authors do this [from A Dance of Burning Blades]

Small recap at the beginning of the book + a more in depth one on her website. Definitely bumped up my TBR because now I don’t have to debate on re-reading the first book!

The Illumicrate edition is beautiful so I’m excited to dig in!
