Training Recommendations

39 y/o M novice. Primarily race cruiser

I prefer racing cruiser because it rolls more easily and feels more stable for someone who has logged a single digit number of races, but when I am training and working on honing skills (weight distribution, pumping, etc.) is it more beneficial for me to spend more time training on my class bike because it is less forgiving, or more beneficial to devote more time doing those practice reps on the same setup I race on?

It’s an upgrade for me, at least

I’m guessing this would represent a step backwards to many but this was a game changer for me.

GHP Pro 24 cruiser frame, redline wheelset (Rhyno Lite + RL hubs), speedline stem + DK bars

It took some getting used to last night (I have been running a DK Cygnus cruiser geared 33/15 and a good 10 lbs heavier at least with much shorter bars) but by the end of the night I felt like I was FLYING.

So Cal Flyers?

For context - I bought a used Cygnus cruiser complete for basically nothing earlier this summer. I repacked the rear hubs and am swapping it to a 48T hollow core spindle since it already needed new cranks and a new BB. This was intended to be my neighborhood cruiser that I could also take to the pump track. I am a 39 y/o novice who is not even sniffing making it to mains at local track events, for reference.

My dilemma is my son has more or less appropriated the bike 😂, so now I’m back at square one if both of us are out riding.

Seems like So Cal Flyers are kind of the gold standard for “do it all” cruisers - does anyone here actually run one on the track? If I want to do so vs buying a tooler and a racer for cruiser (I have a Proline class bike already and am looking at adding an Intense Podium so another son and I aren’t sharing bikes when he wants to come to the track and I want to run class), recommendations on swaps you made to make it more suitable? The one I’m looking at again needs a BB replacement so I may just go through and do a full crankset upgrade while I’m at it.

Replacing rear wheel bearings

Mid school entry level cruiser - I felt some knocking and weird friction with my rear wheel so I took it apart. Rear bearings and compartment were completely grimy with a seeming random mishmash of bearing sizes and varying amounts of wear on the bearings.

Do I have to clean this out and repack loose with fresh bearings and grease or can I use sealed bearing cartridges in here? I do take this to the track but I don’t know that I would describe what I do as competitive racing.

Rear Wheel Bearings

Rear wheel on a mid-school BMX cruiser - this had loose bearings for the rear axle. I was feeling a lot of drag and jangling/knocking so I took the wheel apart and found the axle and bearings were full of grime, what looked like multiple random sizes of loose ball bearings, and many of the bearings were looking beat up.

Does this have to be replaced with loose ball and repacked or can I use sealed bearings? This is mostly a tooling around bike but I do take it on the pump track (I’m a nearly 40 y/o novice - not sure I’d describe what I do as competitive racing)

“Walk Your Wheels” zones

First, I get that bikes shouldn’t ride on the sidewalk and that this is more to combat e-bikes, e-scooters, etc., but maybe we can work on making Oregon and Ohio streets less of a death trap for cyclists instead of penalizing people for choosing a healthier and more environmentally friendly form of commuting?

There is no reason for the main south side corridor roads to not have bike lanes - Knapp is specifically posted that bikes can use the full lane, but I have had people try to run me off the road for daring to actually get in the road on Oregon st.

Newbie question - drivetrain replacements

So, I have a DK Cygnus cruiser that needs a new BB, and I want to swap for a larger chainring while I’m at it. ETA - It still has the stock crankset and I am open to swapping these too if needed

What can I and can’t I do? Knowing this is not a high end bike and diminishing returns, what is my best bang for my buck in terms of improvement? I am a back of pack 39 year old class novice right now who wants a neighborhood tool rounder that I can take to the track.

Huffy Axilus or HX?

EDIT - thanks all for the great advice. We found a proper class mini.

I’ve heard good stuff about the Primus but curious if anyone has tried/test rode the Axilus or HX Comp?

I am having a beast of a time trying to find a mini for my daughter (7 y/o, 45” tall, 1 race under her belt) and according to Huffy’s website she falls in the height/age recs for the Axilus, but I can’t find any specs like assembled weight, top tube size, etc. or reviews from people who have raced them compared to, say, an 18” freestyle.

She did her first race on a department store 16 inch BMX shaped object and just missed podium so this seems like a sensible upgrade without breaking the bank.

My first “bigger” blowout

12” x 12” wood panel - Phthalo blue, blue-teal, magenta, and metallic gold with a white base + black CA.

Morning Therapy

Started with a blowout and when the paint wasn’t moving well with the base I used a big drywall knife to stretch it out.
