Thank you for sharing this beautiful place with me

I just wanted to share my recent trip to the black hills area. You all were so helpful in planning this trip and it was one of the most amazing experiences.

Feel free to read all or some of this or just enjoy my photos :). I just wanted to share my appreciation for all of the help we got here.

At first I was worried about it. I wasn’t sure if I should go during the sturgis rally because of the crowds. I was worried about the weather as it was forecasted to rain most days. It was a 17 hour drive, and I didn’t want to waste my precious time off. The wonderful people here eased my worries and told me to go for it.

Now a lot of this may seem like small things to those of you who are local, but I got to see so many things I’ve never seen before. I’m so grateful.

First day we spent camping at the boondocks at the badlands. The weather was a bit dreary and wet, but we mostly avoided the rain during the day. It was a wonderful introduction to the trip. We did all the famous hikes and the free hiking was so fun, too! After hiking, we drove around the prairie and it was my first time experiencing prairie wildlife. We saw a couple pronghorns, a badger, a million prairie dogs (I’m obsessed), and a few bison.

Then we headed over to Custer and spent the night at north stockade lake. The crowds from sturgis was not an issue for us at all! We don’t eat out or go to hotels, so that helps. We hiked up to black elk peak, and I think that just might be one of the most beautiful summits I’ve done! The weather was absolutely perfect even through the forecast said it would rain all day lmao (I’ve learned the forecast is wrong more than it is right). We drove needles highway and the wildlife loop and visited the wildlife visitors center where a wonderful lady told up to head across the street to see the entire bison herd. Now, where im from there are no bison’s, and I was pretty amazed by the four or five I saw in the badlands. And here I was, driving past over one thousand of these magnificent creatures! I even got a cute picture of a bison and a prairie dog in the same shot lol!

Once we made dinner and settled down that night, we drove over to Rushmore and enjoyed that at night.

We went back to our campsite and slept in our tent through the ambience of a crazy thunder storm. The rain was less like rain droplets and sounded more like we were under a giant faucet. Super cool, and our gear was super wet haha.

The next day, it was a bit rainy. We walked around sylvan lake and did the Sunday gulch trail. Probably super beautiful, but a bit scary because, while it was beautiful weather when we started, it had torrential downpours on the way back up. It was an adventure, though!

We then drove over to elk mountain campground at wind cave national park. We went to the visitors center, and did some scenic driving where we got to see some more creatures! We saw some bison (playfully?) fighting and a coyote on the hunt.  Before bed, the starry sky was incredible and we got to see a few shooting stars.

On the last day, we did a tour at jewel cave where I was so delighted to see about 10 bats! We even got to watch one chase another for awhile flying about the cave. I was also so amazed to see the sea shells deep within the cave! We then changed all of our clothes (as to not spread disease or microbes) and headed over to wind cave for our tour there. The box work was so detailed, and the mystery of it all is so cool. We learned so much.

After that I took a little nap in the car and then we went on a hike at wind cave. The wild life was so cool and enjoyed all the trees.

We then drove and found a cool spot for dinner and a sunset. As we cooked and ate we watched a bison graze from afar and we enjoyed all of the varied clouds and beautiful colors. A bit later, we saw the most spectacular lightning show. Never in my life have I seen anything like it. It lasted for almost 2 hours. It was probably my favorite part of the trip. \

Now I’m off to drive back home, my motivation being a glorious shower!

Overall, I think we packed all we could in 4 days, but I can’t wait to come back. Thank you for sharing this beautiful area with us. I appreciate all the feedback everyone gave on my first two posts while I was planning this trip, you helped us make the most of it!

Any long distance hikers here?

I’m just looking for some inspirational people to tell me about their adventures. It was my dream to do some thru hikes someday (being on a trail for 6 months at a time). I never got to that point (yet), but had hiked for weeks at a time hiking over 200 miles sometimes. Since being diagnosed a year ago I’ve only done day hiking trips around 10 miles, and it honestly doesn’t feel safe. Even with zero insulin on board I have to eat like the entire time if I’m doing a hard summit. And it feels dangerous because I like hiking in areas where I wouldn’t likely be found in time for an emergency. I’ve resorted to only hiking with other people, and I really miss the solitude and backpacking, but I feel scared and like I’d have to carry so much more food and supplies. Anyway, I want to get over this and be able to do what I love so I would love to hear your experiences! Thank you in advance 🥰

Can I get a replacement pod for user error?

So I knew the day would happen that I would press the big purple next button before I actually put the pod on. Do you think I could get a replacement for this? If not, what would be a believable alternative story? I only get enough pods each month and never have extra so I can’t afford to not get a replacement

Custer during Sturgis

The only week off I have this summer happens to fall on sturgis. I wanted to go to the badlands, custer, and wind caves, but I don’t want to be completely bombarded with people. We plan on just camping, hiking, and eating food that we cook ourselves. I would like to have some peace and quiet at night and not have the trails be super crowded. Should I find a different place to go?

If anyone has some mountainous ideas within 15 hours of west Michigan I’m open to ideas too!

I have 4 days at Badlands help me make the best use of my time :)

So here is my current plan but feel free to criticize, adjust, or tell me to go somewhere else entirely! I recently pivoted our plans because of weather so I’m planning on leaving this coming Tuesday, and I only have a rough plan.

Tuesday: 4pm leave West Michigan and drive to mukwonago WI (I have family there that will let me sleep there).

Wednesday: 6/7am leave WI, drive to Sage Creek campground at Badlands NP around 7/8pm (is it even possible to get a spot this late?) do you think it’s smarter to just plan on a hotel or reserved campsite?

Thursday and Friday: explore Badlands (would love input) we want to hike and see wildlife max hiking for 1 day is about 8-10 miles depending on difficulty. I do want to do some of the famous hikes like notch trail and do some wandering around since it’s open hiking which is super cool!

Saturday: 7am leave for Custer SP arrive there and start hiking Elk Peak (haven’t decided on route yet) around 10 am. Stay in a hotel

Sunday: wind cave national park, do a cage tour and some exploring, then back to hotel.

Monday: head back to WI

Pitty Catahoula?

We rescued this pup a couple years ago from my cousin in South Carolina USA. She was neglected but not actively abused. She’s now 4 years old and 40 pounds. The last picture is who my grandma said her mom is. I do see a resemblance, so I believe her. I think her mom looks predominantly pit bull but I don’t actually know. My grandma said her dad was catahoula, but I have my doubts. Our pup seems too small. She does have interesting markings, though. She is the calmest, most submissive, loving, and stupid dog I’ve ever met. Nothing like any of the pitty mixes we’ve had before. She has zero prey drive. I’d actually love for her to have some so she would play, but she is not playful at all just wants belly rubs lol. What do you guys think? (Also if you have any advice to encourage play or any other mental stimulation for her that would be wonderful- though she’s very happy and spoiled).

Decision making when low

Hey guys! I hope y’all are well. I’ve been diagnosed for a year and I’m in Omnipod and Dexcom G7. Do you have any advice for this?
I’m in university and Today I had a quiz my Dexcom said 130 mg/dl (7.2 mmol/L). I didn’t correct since I didn’t want to go low for the quiz. I couldn’t think or remember anything like I was super confused. I figured I didn’t study enough or something. Pretty sure I failed, but it’s a quiz so not a huge deal.

Then 5-10 mins after the quiz, I noticed I felt a little sick and my Dexcom said 109 mg/dl (6.0 mmol/L) I decided to do a manual finger prick. It was 42 (2.3 mmol/L) . Lowest ever for me.

Then for some reason I felt the need to leave the classroom to eat sugar to treat the low. No logic here just felt like frantically that I had to leave. This is bad because if I needed help theres no one to be there to help.

After I felt better I could think again and I realized all the things I did wrong on the quiz.

So 2 things. A quiz is whatever but what if that happened on an exam?

Also how can I not make stupid decisions when I’m low? I know I should have stayed in the room but my brain told me to leave for some reason. I’m scared I’d do something really dumb like go outside or god forbid get behind the wheel.

I think it got so low because the Dexcoms malfunctioned and the pump kept giving insulin

Clicking even when insulin is suspended?

I always thought the clicking sound was background insulin and it use to only happen when I was higher than target or trending up. I kept going super low today and it would click every 15 minutes or so even though I was low. It made me worried it was giving me insulin. I changed pods (because that one expired) and I’m at 80 rn and trending down and it says insulin is suspended yet I still hear the click. Anyway is it like doing something other than administering insulin?

I am coming off of a high carb, high insulin week (back to my norm now), do you think my algorithm is messed up?

My sister is missing almost half her brain AMA

My F21 sister F22 had a stroke in utero that messed up her brain development. Whenever people ask her diagnosis, we usually say Cerebral Palsy, but she has a bunch of other diagnoses. She uses a wheelchair and a speech device. I’m an open book, and won’t be offended by any questions. You can ask questions for her or my parents, too, and if they’re appropriate I’ll ask them (just might take a bit for a response)

Just finished playing for the first time

This contains spoilers for those who haven’t played!

I really enjoyed DBH! I haven’t really played many video games because my parents didn’t let me as a kid so I’m very new to this.

I am almost happy with my ending except the last chapter I managed to get Kara and Alice killed in the camp. I’m not sure what I missed, but plan to go back and figure it out. North and Luther also ended up dying, and I’m sure other characters but those are the ones I cared about.

Otherwise, I went with a peaceful protest and it ended up good in the end! I went through so many Conner’s though lol I thought it was so funny that they kept bringing him back. At the end, it was a new Conner that used the “emergency exit” in his program to not shoot Markus in the final scene.

I’m horrible at the controls since I haven’t played many games, so I often lost fights or would accidentally pick the wrong thing or it would time out. It honestly made it more interesting.

I think my favorite character was Hank and his dog lol. And Markus was my favorite story line. The protest scenes were just super cool and the music was awesome.

Anyway, I’d love any feedback on what you think I should check out when it comes to interesting things I may have missed! Even if it’s just something small that’s fun. I loved some of the random stuff like playing the piano as Markus.

Additionally, what should be my next game? I really liked “open world” and story telling that this game had. I also played Fire watch and enjoyed that, but this one was so much more sophisticated and deeper. I’m fine with some violence integrated in the game, but don’t want a shooter.

FYI: I’ve been playing on my bfs ps4

Thanks!

What’s your go to dessert that doesn’t destroy your bs?

I’m not talking low carb, but just something that’s fairly easy to dose for.

I love a late night ice cream with a movie, but it ain’t working out lately lol. I weigh it, prebolus 30-40 mins, and dose for 150% the carbs extending the last 50% over 2 hours (on omnipod). Still, end up sitting at 250 most of the night with a ton of corrections. I tired the “carb smart “ice cream and dosed for the full carbs (not net carbs), and that worked pretty well, but almost not worth it. I think I’m gonna make ice cream less frequent of a treat, but would love your suggestions on stuff that might be a bit easier on the blood sugar. It can be low carb or not. Thanks!

OP5 settings help :)

Please remove this if it’s not allowed! I will be discussing any advice with my endo before changing my settings too much.

So my goal is to have super tight control. With MDI I was pretty much 100% TIR 70-180 mg/dl and probably 95% 70-140 mg/dl. I’m still honeymooning I presume btw.

With starting OP5, I’m having a bit harder time keeping good numbers. Noting crazy at all. I’m around 85-90% TIR, so I’m happy, but I have to constantly check and do correction blouses and sometimes overrides (although I try not to since my endo says it messed up the algorithm). I’d really like to be able to bolus and not have to stare at it for the next 6 hours. Since I’m in college, I’ve literally been eating no carbs during the day because I don’t want to be distracted in class, and just eating carbs at night. I’d love to be able to spread that out some more.

The biggest red flag in my data is that I’m usually 70% bolus or more and 30% basal. My endo told me to try to get it down to 50-50 ish, but proceeded to not change any of my settings or tell me how to do that other than reliably count carbs. I’d say I’m good about carb counting super accurately 50% of the time (weighing stuff etc), then kind of by vibes the other half of the time. I do almost always pre bolus 15-20 mins. The only days I get 50/50 are those that I eat super low carb (see picture with the only 50/50 day being 55g of carbs).

I rarely have been going low so that’s been great! I’d go low a couple times a week with MDI. MDI I took 8 units basal, and now with OP5 I’m around 4 units daily.

Let Me know if you have any advice I could bring up with the endo. I attached some images for reference. Thank you so much!

This is 1 year old Gloria she has the most massive block head (pictures don’t do it justice). She was so fun to go on an adventure with! I just had to share because she’s so cute. (I’m in west Michigan if anyone is interested in adoption I can give you the info). She was honestly really well behaved for a puppy!

TLDR: my A1C is always way lower than my GMI from Dexcom- why?

I just got my latest A1C back (4.8!!!🎉). However my Dexcom says over the past 90 days my average blood sugar was 125 mg/dl (which is still great for me!) and a GMI of 6.1%. I do verify regularly with a finger stick.

My A1C has always been way lower than expected and in comparison to my blood sugar readings. When I was first diagnosed idk what my GMI was, but I know I was spending all night around 300-400 mg/dl and the day was usually 150-300 mg/dl and my A1C was only 7.2.

Doctors always are confused that my A1C was only 5.5 when prescribed insulin. My primary care has even tried to tell me I don’t need it. I was given insulin purely based on Dexcom readings.

Anyway do you think my body has a naturally low A1C compared to my blood sugar? Is this common, or do you guys experience this too? It doesn’t really affect my life anymore but I just find it interesting and hoping nothing is causing it that could be an issue!
