Obsession (2026) if it was made in the 90's
Ben Stiller as Bear
Itatí Cantoral as Nikki
Ming Na Wen as Sara
Jack Black as Ian
What do my (non problematic) crushes say about me (33m)
Not a defense of Bear but...
Let's all agree that Bear is an entitled creep whose decision to not kill Nikki doesn't come from love or altruism but of ego. Agreed? Agreed
But what the fuck was he supposed to do?!! If he were to kill Nikki, what would be his alibi for murdering a young woman?
So he was left with 3 shitty options
1.be forever trapped in a relationship with a monster who will kill anyone in her path.
2.kill an innocent woman and face jail time and alienate everyone in his life.
3.Kill himself
And all because the wishing willow chose the WORST interpretation of his wish so this isn't a Breaking bad or an uncut gems situation where the protagonist was given an easy out multiple times but dismissed it because of their pride and greed.
While we should not aspire to be or admire Bear,I believe the wishing willow is the real villain because what part of "I wish Nikki loved me more than anyone else" implies that Nikki should give up her bodily autonomy, become a monster and have no real personality,if Nikki already loved him like a brother then why not enhance that similarly when Ian made the million dollar wish, why couldn't the money magically appear in his bank account instead of his house, where it looks hella suspicious.
So yes,Bear is an asshole but he wasn't given a rock and a hard place but a harder place,a worse place and eternal pain.
If the show wasn't built around Will Smith, Alfonso Ribeiro would have been the breakout star
He's funnier than Will Smith, more talented and in my opinion, his dramatic scenes were effective without feeling forced but because the show was built around Will Smith,Will Smith was able to branch off into movies while Alfonso Ribeiro always be known as Carlton Banks.
