Kaleido owners – finally clicked that these aren’t “real” drum roasters (and it’s changing how I’m approaching profiles)

Hey everyone,

I’ve been roasting on a Kaleido M1 Lite for a bit now and it finally sank in (though it should have been obvious from the start): Kaleido roasters are not full-throated traditional drum roasters. The stainless mesh/perforated drum is deliberately designed to let a lot of direct radiant + convective heat through the slots in addition to whatever conductive heat the thin drum itself is carrying. Result is lower thermal mass and a much more hybrid character than a solid, heavy drum. They just don’t behave the same way a classic drum does, especially in how heat transfers and how the bean mass responds once you’re past the drying phase.

Because of that, a lot of the classic drum-roaster intuition (charge temps, power curves, how you expect RoR to settle through Maillard, etc.) needs adjustment.

I’m still pretty new to roasting and I’m trying to get a cleaner grip on these 150 g batches this weekend. Right now, on average natural-process Brazil I’ve been charging around 155 °C / 310 °F with an initial burner setting of 50–55%. The RoR through Maillard has been a bit of a struggle to keep smooth, and I’m still getting the classic crash + flick right at or just after first crack.

Would love to hear from other Kaleido (especially M1/M1 Lite) users:

  • What charge temperatures are you actually landing on for similar density/natural Brazils (or other origins)?
  • What initial burner percentages are you starting with, and how aggressively do you step the heat once the beans are in?
  • How are you managing power and airflow to keep the smoothest possible RoR through Maillard and into development without the crash/flick?

Any profiles, power curves, or “this is what finally worked for me on the mesh drum” notes would be hugely appreciated. Trying to dial these in before the weekend roasts.

Thanks in advance.

Decaf Roast Curve - Thoughts on Improvements?

Happy Sunday, beautiful people!

So apparently I’m bas-akwards… because roasting decaf come much easier to me than roasting regular coffee!

Outside of my pour‑overs, I’m basically running on half‑caff at most… usually around 75% decaf because I’m a heavy‑volume coffee drinker and I’d like my heart to stay inside my chest.

I’ve dropped one of my decaf roast curves from Artisan from yesterday here, so by all means, go ahead and critique away and suggest what you’d do differently to make the roast as dialed in as it can be…

If you’re wondering which decaf beans I roasted, they’re from Happy Mug and their name is displayed within the curve.

If you’ve got real decaf experience, I’d love your feedback on this.

[Seeking Advice] First decent roast curve on my Kaleido M1 Lite – Colombia Cauca Maria Rosa Oidor [150g]

Hi everyone,

I’ve attached my roast curve for 150g of Colombia Cauca Maria Rosa Oidor beans from Happy Mug. I realize I’m nowhere near a great roast yet (I’m only two weekends into learning how to roast coffee beans) but I’m really excited about the progress this far (only 14 roasts in).

I’m using a new Kaleido M1 Lite with Artisan software and overall I like the roaster a lot, even with some break-in complications I’m having with the temperature probes. The BT probe seems to always read around 10C shy of actually FC temperatures.

This is my best curve so far. It’s the first time I was able to hit a solid ~5-minute dry phase. I had to drop my charge temperature all the way down to 145°C to make it happen (I know that’s lower than usual, but my roaster seems to run a bit hotter than most).

I’d love some feedback! My next goal is to extend the browning / Maillard phase to at least 3 minutes. How would you approach that on a machine like this?

Any tips on power/fan settings or curve shape to stretch that phase without messing up the rest of the roast?

Thanks in advance and super grateful for any advice from the more experienced folks here!

Thoughts on Roast Curves

This is the best result from three consecutive roasts of Sweet Maria’s Moka Java SWP Decaf Blend.

I’d really value any experienced feedback. I realized afterward that I skipped the soak from charge to TP, which probably didn’t help.

Roasting decaf is absolutely trickier than working with regular beans.

Genuine Origin - Green Coffee Beans Supplier?

Hi everyone...

I’m looking at Genuine Origin as another bean supplier option.

Has anyone used them regularly? How’s the quality, consistency, and shipping?

Thanks in advance for any experienced input.

First (ever) roast on Kaleido M1 Lite with Brazil Dry Process — went way too fast, looking for advice

Good morning/afternoon, everyone,

I just got my Kaleido M1 Lite and did my very first roast last night with 180g of Brazil Dry Process Felipe Gonçalves from Sweet Maria’s.

I seasoned the roaster empty for 20 minutes the night before just to burn off any lingering oils, etc. and used the same seasoning process to at least get an initial feel using Artisan.

My first roast was a mess in terms of speed:

• Dry end at 3:42
• First crack at 5:43
• Drop at 7:42

Clearly my first roast as rushed.

I preheated the M1 Lite to 165°C, and raised the SV to 220°C immediately after charging the beans, along with switching the burner to 70% after charging. Same as Mike did from Virtual Coffee Lab on YouTube.

I’m trying to dial in a medium roast with good chocolate, nutty notes, and body to mimic Lavazza Crema e Aroma style (espresso and mokas)…

I highly suspect I had the SV/heat too high after charging, but I’d love some advice on:

• How to better control speed on the M1 Lite (especially fan and SV usage after charging)
• What a good target timeline looks like for a medium roast at 180g
• Any beginner tips for this bean or common mistakes with Dry Process Brazilians

Thanks in advance!

Looking for real‑world Kaleido M1 Lite + HiBean app experiences on iPhone

With my Kaleido M1 Lite arriving today… I’m digging into the Kaleido ecosystem and want to hear from people who roast on the M1 Lite while using the HiBean app on an iPhone.

Specifically interested in:

• Milestone marking accuracy (dry end, yellowing, first crack, etc.)

• Profile saving + syncing — does it store your edits consistently?

• Profile repeatability… can you reliably run the same curve for the same beans?

• Any quirks, bugs, or workarounds you’ve discovered?

Trying to understand whether the iOS app is stable enough for consistent roasting or if people are running into issues.

Advice Needed - Kitchen Range Ventilation Adequacy - Kaleido M1 Lite

Hoping to get some insight from folks experienced with the Kaleido M1 Lite or generally roasting beans with similar roasters inside. I snapped this photo of the ventilation over our kitchen range, and I’m optimistic it’ll be sufficient for roasting directly beneath it. The ventilation is fairly powerful.

Thoughts and advice?

Kaleido M1 Lite Is Officially on the Way — Roasting Newbie Reporting In!

I’m an avid home barista who’s been deep in the espresso and brewing rabbit hole for a while now… but I’ve never roasted a single coffee bean in my life.

That’s about to change.

I just ordered a Kaleido M1 Lite, and it’s currently making its way to me. I’m equal parts excited and humbled because I understand roasting is its own universe with a steep learning curve.

I’d love to tap into the experience in this community. If you have any beginner‑friendly resources, please drop them… things like:

• Roasting guides
• YouTube channels
• Blogs or written tutorials
• Charge temp / development basics
• Anything you wish you knew on day one

And if you’re a seasoned roaster, I’d really appreciate any insight you think a total beginner should hear before firing up the drum for the first time.

Looking forward to learning from all of you and hopefully contributing back once I get some batches under my belt.

Advanced Sleep Phase Disorder (ASPD) ruining my nights since January + anxiety about losing sleep

Question is, how does someone actually address the anxiety of losing sleep at night?

I believe I’ve been dealing with a brutal case of Advanced Sleep Phase Disorder (ASPD) since January. Before that, I was consistently getting 7+ solid hours and could actually rely on my alarm to wake up. Now my circadian rhythm yanks me awake between 2:30 and 3:30 AM every morning without fail. That alarm? Completely useless now!

I’ve thrown almost everything at this: sleep hygiene, the works. I even bought a pair of Luminette 3 light therapy glasses and wear them every night like a good patient. Still waking up stupid early with that creeping anxiety about not getting enough sleep.

Anyone else fighting ASPD or early morning awakenings? What actually moved the needle for you?

Dropping a clip of my morning moka…

I’ve been dialing in my workflow and want a reality check from people who’ve been doing this longer than I have.
Give it a score and hit me with any pro‑level adjustments you’d recommend (grind, heat, timing, whatever stands out).

▲ 1 r/sleep

Last night I decided to bump my DSIP dose from 300 mcg to 400 mcg after a bit of frustration had settled in with my recent sleep quality.

And... oh… my… goodness.

The difference was immediately noticeable. Much higher quality and deeper sleep and I woke up actually feeling rested instead of groggy or half-baked. It was easily the best sleep I’ve had since December last year.

My plan is to run 400 mcg again tonight, and depending on how it performs, possibly titrate up to 500 mcg to see if there’s any additional benefit or if I’ve already hit the sweet spot.

I’d really love to hear anecdotal input from others here who runs DSIP:

  • What dose are you running?
  • How long did it take before you noticed meaningful improvements?
  • Any titration strategies that worked (or didn’t)?
  • Any struggles or unexpected effects while using DSIP to improve sleep quality?

I’m experimenting carefully and logging everything, but hearing real-world experiences from others would be incredibly helpful as I try to establish consistently better sleep sessions.

(Obviously not medical advice—just sharing personal experience and looking to learn from the community.)

Looking forward to your thoughts and experiences.
