I'm basically carrying a screaming child through nursery for drop off at this point

Not a rant, more just a WTF? I know it's a phase but it's so awkward. My son is 19mo and it's not even just when I dropped him off, this morning he clearly didn't want to go to nursery. Unhappy the moment I opened the front door, frustration, body stiffening until he went in the car seat. I often give him car snacks which today he didn't want to eat until we were at nursery so then more frustration because he cant go in with them. To get to his room you go through the bigger rooms and he was so frustrated the whole way through, you could probably ghear him through the whole nursery. Then the drop off, throwing himself about everywhere.

Ah now it's 8am and you must go to work, the joys!

I feel terrible too as the last two mornings I haven't even been able to get his tshirt that he slept in off. I've done teeth, face, trousers, shoes, nappy but that top isn't coming off without the biggest meltdown. Is there ever things you miss that you think that seems like you're not providing? You dont need to share what it is but just the knowledge that this does happen would be appreciated, or maybe I do just need a big "no, you need to change the top, no questions".

He just started saying no in the last couple weeks and I think thats the phase. I always try to make sure we're never rushing in the morning but I do need to go to work at some point.

Any good tips for decompressing after intense nursery drop offs?

Scotland: Nursery fees

Where's everyone at with this in your minds? Obviously England has funding from 9months plus, we don't until 3 years unless you qualify from 2 years.

I'm a single income household and the £1400 a month just floors me. My son is 19 months now and the idea that this is going to be for another approx 1.5 years is soul destroying. Mostly I try to just put it in a box and not think about it but surely I can't be the only one feeling this weight? I moved out of Edinburgh because nursery fees were even crazier.

I emailed my MSP a couple months ago because it was in the SNP manifesto for this term but the response i got was just a very polite brush off, no sense of we are looking at this, I'll raise it.

Do I just keep it in the box or is there something else that can be done? I could create a petition on parliament website but would other parents sign it? Thats it guess what im trying to understand.

Not everyone pays the same

Just spent ages looking for reasonably priced pair of trainers for my son that have a wide toe box and whilst I found some it's just getting to me. Everyone talks about costs like we're all paying the same but we're not.

If you can't breastfeed you need formula and that stuff is expensive £1-200pm. Then yes there are some great store brands but if your child has chunky legs you're going to need to buy pampers (believe me i tried other brands, throughout). Some toddlers eat an insane amount of food (and obviously I'm grateful but ££). Then the shoes, start rite are all "we sell shoes from £20"... no you do that for standard fit, not wide fit, those start from £40+.

Just a reminder and a bit of frustration, sorry! that not all kids have the same costs. Oh and if you're looking for a wide toe box, clarks have some doodles shoes in a G left at £9 only a few though.

High protein intake in toddler, links to obesity later in life

Perhaps a stupid question but I was reflecting how much protein my son was eating the other day and then thought I better check what a normal amount of protein is for toddlers (18mo) and then seen something about high protein intake in early childhood being linked to obesity

>there is probably a causal relationship between a high-protein intake in early childhood (≤ 18 months) – particularly protein of animal origin – and higher BMI later in childhood,

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8861858/

I was just curious how accurate this might be and if I need to change up his diet.

For reference, I try to do rainbow plates, he often eats salad and high fibre diet. He poops twice a day usually like clockwork, a bit off atm but I suspect thats his teething and he still poops once a day so he's not constipated. He does drink loads of water, perhaps the protein is why.

He's quite easily over 20g a day though, nursery days I dont know the exact portions of meals but he still has 500ml+ of milk and a chicken snack on the way to and from nursery. On a non nursery day, he'll definitely have nearer 30g.

The boy can eat but I don't want to do anything that might contribute to obesity later on. Is this a legit study? Am I reading it right? Any other links to dull my spiral?

Much appreciated

Favourite parks in and around Central belt Scotland for small toddlers (1.5-2 years)

I'm fed up of going to a park and it not being suitable for my child, he'll go on the bigger toddler apparatus but he gets overloaded by the bigger kids running about. I've been taking him earlier/ later so he can gain confidence when kids aren't around but it'd be good to know of good parks we can visit that are suitable for him now.

We live in Stirling, there's lots of paid things that have suitable apparatus for his age such as briarlands but struggling to find free play parks.

I was on Google maps last night but you dont always get pictures and then reviews of good park could be for 5yo. Things like mugdock park looks amazing but looks to be for older kids?

Would also appreciate good trails/ parks/ walks in and around this area suitable for that age.

Looking to hear experiences where the lack of sleep/ exhaustion subsides as a parent

Try not to laugh. Does that happen? I know it won't for everyone but I'd appreciate some hearing for some it has if possible?

My son is 18mo, he's hasn't slept great since all the developments at 5mo but a baby with lack of sleep is different to a fearless toddler with lack of sleep and FT work. He also seems to have developed a refusal to go to sleep until between 10pm-12am and a refusal to wake up (he does wake up at night for water). I feel like I have a baby and a teenager all at once! I've been dressing him for nursery whilst asleep because I need to get to work but this week even though he's asleep when I try to put his shoes/ sandals on he's wriggles about, whilst still sleeping.

I've tried capping naps, it didn't work, I try letting him fall asleep while doing heartbeat taps, it doesn't work and I've really tried, 2-3 hours bedtimes, he will only go to sleep by being rocked. So I'm assuming this is just a phase and I can accept that.

But honestly I wonder the impact this is going to have on me long term, I'm exhausted, this week I've felt physically hungover and I ain't drank alcohol in years.

So I was just looking for some knowledge that it does get a little bit easier?

Refusal to sit on potty- ideas?

My son is showing lots of signs he's nearly ready for potty training, he's pulling his trousers down, holding his nappy when peeing and kind of pulling at it, he has long gaps between pees, he always does of to a corner to do a poop, he tried to wipe himself yesterday after a nappy change without any demonstration from me . His words are starting to come in and nursery said to me that they're happy to support him but he needs to be ble to talk first, so I'm mostly just waiting on language to build.

But the one big barrier he has is the potty, he will not sit on it. He started sitting unaided just before 4 months and for various reasons I did elimination communication training with him, within a week he was pooping in the potty every week and he was quite happy about it. Around 8 month mark he was able to stand and he was just too busy to sit on the potty anymore, there was a world to explore, so after a while continuing to try i let him poop in his nappy, thinking once he had gotten used to the standing he'd calm down a bit.

I have tried intermittently since, he's now 18m, he's had numerous poop accidents on the floor. Because the moment I try to get him to sit on the potty, he wants to run off, he cannot sit still. I've tried leaving it out for familiarisation, but he just deconstructs the thing or tries to stand in it.

I'm at a loss and need advice on things I can try as I'm thinking in the next couple months he'll be ready but not with this potty thing. Would a different potty help? I have this one or should I try the toilet with that thing with the steps? His potty is is in the livingroom as toilet is upstairs and it was always easier, should I put it in the bathroom? It's quite a small bathroom.

Advice appreciated.

Edit: to say i really do think this is about the struggle be still. Boy hasn't done a nappy change lying down with me since atleast 6 months. But who knows.

Ways to make money stretch

Thought it might be useful to talk about how to make money stretch because we're busy parents and we dont have time to muddle through bureaucracy.

You can increase your pension contributions and you may be better off as a result.

Child benefit is based on earning less than 60k but if you earn slightly over that you miss out. Increasing you pension contributions is before tax, it's your taxable income that gets counted, so you'd be getting more money longer term as it's not getting taxed, you might even reduce your tax rate depending on how much you earn/ increase contributions and you'll be eligible for CB.

Take home pay calculator for figuring out what take home would look like if you reduced your salary.

Then (Especially my fellow SINGLE PARENTS) if you're entitled to UC for your child, the amount again is based on taxable income. So let's say you currently earn 3k/pm increasing your contributions by 500pm might reduce your salary to 2600pm but will increase your UC payment, potentially cover the loss depending on how much you pay for childcare.

Edit: Hope this makes sense, I'm not the best on this stuff and it's been a rough night for sleep haha!

Hope this helps someone. What things do you do to make the money stretch?

Sander recommendations

I'm looking to sand/ prep (excuse poor terminology) cabinets (these ones) before painting and I was thinking that buying a sander would probably save me a lot of time. Looking online there's so many different types of sanders, does anyone have any tips for deciding? Im definitely just getting started with DIY and really enjoying it so far, so I do think I will tackle bigger jobs as time goes on. For example, I have a room with woodchip wallpaper which makes me think the wall might need some sanding if I do tackle it on but should I just settle for a basic sander right now? Something like this?

All advice appreciated. Oh and I take it you do need to degrease even new cabinets as part of the prep process?

Teeth brushing tips for a defiant 18mo

I've been brushing my sons teeth since he was about 6 months, there's been the occasional bad day where its not gone to plan but we've always gotten past it. But the last 2 weeks have been a nightmare, I can get in and brush his back teeth, his bottom teeth but the top teeth he will scream blue murder, I have tried pinning him down, doing it in his sleep, tv, even giving him my phone but those top front teeth are a no go. Would you go to the dentist? His dentist is private so they would give him a checkup if I pay which I'm not against.

Earlier when I dropped him off at nursery he let me lift his top lip when he was in the car seat so im going to try that at pickup (I'm desperate) but does anyone have any other thoughts/ tips/ suggestions?

Best way to deal nettles growing from next door

My neighbour has put down sheets on our border fence to keep down weeds. As a result a few different plants are coming up in my garden. Most I can handle but there's a nettle weed growing. Now admittedly I'm too busy atm for gardening due to having a small toddler, I just spent the entire morning clearing it out but im conscious its just going to grow back... whats the best way to deal with it?

My border, is filled with stones from the last owner, do I just lift them up and put my own sheeting down?

Novice, help me decide which approach to take

Looking to build some cabinets in the livingroom in the alcoves next to the chimney breast as per picture (sizing in picture not to scale), right now its just plain wallpaper across and empty alcoves, I've had someone remove the old electric fire and put fireboard in the fireplace alcove, so i think i can just paint that according to Google.

I'm currently debating how I should do the cabinets at the bottom,

  1. B&M has cabinets in 2nd pic, that match the depth and would fit and then I can tidy up later on with mdf around to encase it. The cost for cabinets is £40 each and is a level of DIY I'm comfortable with. I would need to get 5 in total so £200.

  1. Or, do I do shaker style with mdf panelling custom built. Beatsons has sheet mdf at £20 2400x1200x12mm, so if I got that cut, it would seem it might be £40-60 and then obviously I'd need to paint but I'd need to do that on option 1 anyway. I don't have tools, just a have a rolson drill, maybe some other odd bits, eg tape measure etc. So I'd need to buy a nail gun, what else am I missing? Beatsons cut mdf, so if I measure it all out today I could ask them to do this week at some point hopefully. If I did this do I overlap the cupboard, or make it flush with chimney?

I feel like option 2 is the optimal solution but I'm filled with fear, which I do hate and makes me want to do it more but I'm also a single mum with, a FT job and a whole lot of house to sort. Option1, feels a LOT less stressful, I'll have all the tools. I think if i just knew what i was in for a little more I could give it a go, so that's why I need your advice. I've taken a week off to sort out the livingroom and do the garden.

My budget is tight, so I do need to keep costs low. Also plan to sell house in a couple of years so minimal effort/cost for premium look preferred (the dream eh?).

Any tips on materials for shelving would also be appreciated, i was going to get tongue and groove panelling and paint for behind the shelves.

17mo, new bedtime of 10pm

This seems late to me just wanted to see if anyone else has such a late bedtime because it seems to be working for him but means he's only getting 8-9 hours at night as he wakes between 6-7 with one wakeup.

Nursery are capping his naps with him waking at 1.30pm, so he'll generally get 1.5 hours in the day.

He was previously going to bed at 7/8 but waking multiple times a night, so this seems to be working better but it just seems late.

I've never been a big sleeper until I had a kid so there is that lovely genetic trait i might've passed on. He's always been early on dropping a nap but 17mo seems too young for no nap and whilst sometimes he does push his nap at home, he wouldn't last the whole day consistently.

Any thoughts?

Kids viruses seem pre-historic

As I lay here unable to sleep from the pain and temperature flux I'm invisaging some Jurassic Park or 12 monkeys situation whereby nurseries go and dig out frozen mosquitos and release whatever prehistoric "viral infection" was around. Sorry nursery folk, it's not personal. And honestly viral infection why does that sound so insignificant?!

I knew we'd get sick but this feels like I'm in a game of darwinism, all whilst tending to a very energetic child who from the moment he wakes up is on his scooter.

Mostly just a rant as im feeling sorry for myself but does everyone else get knocked for six with these? Wondering if i do actually need to get healthier (although I'm the healthiest I've ever been- no alcohol/ cigarettes, pizza, fresh food always made from scratch, very active. What else could i be missing? ) Im currently doing a shot of triple ginger day and night, tesco lozenges, multi vitamin, vitamin D, tesco cold/ flu capsules, trying to rest but like I say my temp flexing is quite disturbing and then when I wake my throat is in agony.

Also do the infections get less intense as the kid gets older?

For those with no village, what's your plan in emergencies if you're not able to parent?

I've been really sick this weekend to the point I've been worried about sepsis, managed to drive me and bug to the local hospital to get antibiotics yesterday. But more than the illness it left me thinking- if i was in hospital or dead what would happen to my son?

I need to make a will because my mum whom I think would technically be my next of kin was abusive and we're NC but I honestly don't know who my son would go to instead, I do have a friend couple who are stable but we dont see them often ? And I've no idea if they'd do it.

Then what happens if you're in hospital? My friend couple are in another city and ultimately no one i had in my phone was able to help when we had norovirus so I dont even know where he'd go. Do hospital allow kids at some point to stay with you?

Any practical advice appreciated

Who knew? I've been using la roche posay but the application of a roll on to a energetic toddler is insane!

Had to share this finding for the heatwave.
