Signed Yoshimi print I got for my birthday!
“I’m pretty!”

“I’m pretty!”
Very psychedelic as well.
I’m hesitant to call the whole thing a noise rock effort, there is a ballad or two along with pop melodies galore. BUT… who’s to say that Big Black never made a love song? One of the main appeals of Dinosaur Jr. is the vocal melodies for Christ’s sake!
Anyway, nearly a perfect album the Lips gave us in 1990. The follow up, Hit To Death In The Future Head is equally spectacular, but Priest Driven Ambulance will always hold a special place in my heart. Unconsciously Screamin, Take Meta Mars, God Walks Among Us Now, and especially Mountain Side may rock more than almost anything ever. Wow. Still blows me away every time.
Do you even know what URL means?
Perfectly fuzzy and awesome from front to back.
Personally, this was quite embarrassing.
This one rules! The Groove, Emily’s guitar flourishes, the stellar build, I’m lovin’ it! Although this opinion is after a few tries, I remember being really excited to see that someone posted the first performance, and being bored and unimpressed. I don’t know what I was thinking! The fucked up, delayed out ending into that crazy almost hardcore finish is my favorite part.
Yes, the two Donahue albums are my favorites. But Ronald Jones was a better guitarist imo
Wow. Just, wow. As a Slint, Squirrel Bait, and Steve Albini worshipper, I can’t believe I haven’t heard this until now!
Just watched the Pitchfork Classics documentary on the Soft Bulletin, and Steven talked about how much they resisted putting loud guitars on the album. Personally, I would enjoy this album more if there was more overdriven Flaming Lips guitar goodness. I know that one of the main reasons they didn’t was the departure of Ronald Jones. He was a true sorcerer of guitar, but I don’t think Wayne or Steven should’ve underestimated their ability to fuzz some fuckin’ faces off. Some of the skronkiest skronks I’ve heard come out of a guitar have been from them. But, in general, I prefer the early pre-second guitar player / Donahue / Jones eras to the later stuff (though I still adore Mystics, Embryonic, and American Head).
What do you think?
What are some of your favorite Wayne or Steven guitar parts / performances?
EDIT: No, I do not think the Soft Bulletin is perfect, even without the remixes. Just my opinion though, please be civil!
For the record, this is an issue of choice being overwhelmed by choice.
This is probably my favorite Lips video. Warning to anyone photosensitive, there are a lot of flashing colors and lights. It sure does work though, especially within the context of the Donahue’d out rocket of a song. They have a lot of dense videos, but this one takes the cake in my opinion. I also love how Ronald and Steven are in it, even though they didn’t play on that record. The video doesn’t have that many views on YouTube, so give it a watch!
What do you think of this video? What’s your favorite video from the Lips? Much love from Lawrence, KS!
Personally, the classic Bilboa (parts 1 & 2) has always been my favorite. The Caprice Classic Tape and Axis Bold As Boognish also rank highly for me.
What are your picks?
Howdy! Looking for bands similar in sound to the first six Lips records (including the debut EP). I’m already pretty into the Butthole Surfers, Hüsker Dü, and Ween, among others. Mercury Rev has been the biggest discovery in my quest for more fun, fuzzy Lips. But I’m still on the hunt for more!
While searching for Priest Driven live bootlegs, I stumbled across a show credited to the Black Halos. Supposedly there are a whole series of names and shows from this time. If anyone knows anything or has audio / video from these sets, please let me know. I am a massive fan of everything before Ronald Jones left, and I had no idea about these! Thanks.
