So, 1st impressions!

Absolutely a worthwhile purchase.

I think because I’m quite late to the eGPU party, a lot of the kinks have been patched.

It was pretty straightforward setting it up but had I not been reading about them for a while now, there’s definitely a few things that would have made it difficult had I not investigated beforehand.

Anyway, something I come away with is, despite the huge increase in gpu performance, it is still a Z2 Extreme mobile cpu in there. And so for games that are cpu bound you do need to temper your expectations.

For instance, i mostly got the eGPU so I could have a better experience with Company of Heroes 3. What I find though is, instead of 30fps 1% lows 22-24 fps with everything on the lowest settings and looking like absolute garbage… Now I’m getting 30fps 1% lows 25-26fps but with a mix of High and Medium settings (3440x1440) looking stunning!

Halo Campaign Evolved I was very curious about. Let’s face it, it runs like garbage on the XAX, even with everything at the lowest settings at 1080p.

With the eGPU I’m getting around 57-60fps with a mix of Med and a few high settings. 3440x1440 (using DLSS of course). This can increase using Frame Generation but to be honest I’d happily lower things a touch to just get consistent 60fps.

I grew up on games that were constantly dipping well below 30fps. I don’t have the same need for crazy fps most people seem to want these days lol

I also tested a few games I’m not likely to play on the XAX but I was curious.

CoD Warzone. A bit disappointing but I think I just needed to mess around with the settings a bit more. Was getting around 57fps.

Indiana Jones. I was able to put settings up to Ultra but I think because of DLSS being set to Performance I was getting between 60-70fps but the image was pretty blurry. But, I reckon it’s the sort of game that 30fps is livable so I’d be tempted to try again with DLSS at quality.

I have reading for weeks about what my options are for pairing a gpu with my Xbox Ally X and decided on the Gigabyte Ai Box but they were never in stock. Then a couple of days ago I saw Amazon UK had 12.

Thought ok, this weekend I’m getting one. Then only 6, then today when I checked whilst I was out I saw there were only 3!

So I got home and there was 1 left but I got it!! 😃

Now the price has gone waaaaay up so I got really lucky!! 😮

Hey, soo i totally get that in the PC market (Which the Ally is more aligned with) people love tinkering with settings

But, i have felt recently that I’m just constantly changing settings, benchmark testing and then repeating when using my Ally.

I’m not like that with my Switch 2 or PS5. Granted, they don’t have that kind of customisation but in the end… do I care? I do not.

I’ve been gaming long enough to remember games that would dip well below 20fps (GoldenEye, Perfect Dark) but none of us cared. We still had a blast.

Times and technology have moved on of course but I can’t help feel like the Industry/Market has just done a really good job of making us care about 5, 10, 15 fps differences.

I think I’m going to turn off all the overlay stats for a while and see if I can just enjoy playing the games on my Ally X instead of tweaking them 🙏🏻

Title says it all really 😊 Seems only the Legion Go S has the fully supported version whereas for Ally/x’s it’s still just beta.

Any clues as to long it could be until the beta is fully supported?

I have had the Ally for about two months now but only just thought to install GTAV to how well it performed and I was blown away tbh!

60fps with pretty reasonable settings and long shadow distances!

Even with ray tracing on it hovered around 40-49 fps (which was fun to try but I prefer higher fps.

Textures on ultra too! Looks super crisp!

So, this isn’t a money is no expense hypothetical.

You could get the XG mobile (5070 ti version) but you’d have to sell some stuff, maybe pick up some extra shifts or… you could save a lot of money and go the Aoostar route and accept if you were to ever travel with the Ally you’d always be on the Z2 chip only…

What’s your choice?

It’s a beast of a device. Some of the older games perform amazingly well on it, like insanely high fps on Dirt 3 😂 Halo MCC I thought would be a little bit better but it’s still amazing.

I’m finding it quite difficult to get settings that work for me on Company of Heroes 3 which I know is a pretty demanding game.
