I'm renting a finished and furnished attic of a century old farm house. I installed a portable air conditioner but it, and subsequently the replacement, died. I know that it's the only next option.

I just walked into a Target and went to the Starbucks. I was on the phone with one earbud in so I could hear what was going on around me. About 30 seconds later this old white guy came over and interrupted me and asked me to quiet down as they were having a business meeting. I replied I'm on a work call too. His response was "But we were here first." I reminded him that this is a public space and that if he wanted a quiet and private space, he should have chosen somewhere else.
