Has anyone here switched from a hard-shell to an inflatable for kayak camping?
I used to think inflatable kayaks were basically pool toys, but storing a full size hard shell in an apartment started killing my motivation to paddle. Roof racks, carrying it up and down, finding space for it every weekend trip felt like way more effort than it should.
A few months ago I started looking into better inflatable/drop stitch options, mostly for lakes, calm rivers, and occasional overnight camping trips. I was honestly surprised by how much better the nicer inflatables feel compared to cheap ones. They seem way more rigid, track better than I expected, and setup isn’t too bad once you get used to it.
The biggest advantage for me is spontaneity. I can throw the bag in the trunk with my camping gear and head out without turning it into a whole logistics project.
For ppl here who use inflatable kayaks for kayak camping, how have they held up over multiple seasons? Any issues with durability, drying/packing, carrying camping gear, or feeling limited compared to a hard-shell?
