Just what the hell is this matcmaking

I’m not upset to loose vs 2k player and even to loose some mmr after it. But what the hell is wrong with this mmr distribution? Loosing 150 points seems somewhat unfair. Also do you feel like Temple vs Hive is a terrible matchup for Temple? I understand that I had no chances given the difference in mmr and experience with the game, but I genuinely do not understand what can I theoretically do with 90 parasites, 70 locusts, 40 hornets, 20 scorpions and 4 waurms on the first finalka. I would appreciate any advice!

Who are your picks for Dungeon on Sprint?

I feel like it’s nearly impossible not to bleed infiltrators and trogs on Sprint. And as Devir and Typhona are pretty much always banned, I’m wondering who’s your hero of choice on this template? I had some moderate luck with Zakron but he’s a very high maintenance pick. Is it just me or Dungeon is not that good on Sprint?

Cove confirmed , kinda — If you overhear the conversation between two vampires in the campaign, you can find out plans for a new dlc faction

Is Mreowa not a terrible pick after the patch?

I gave her a try in a quick game versus a bot and I’m under impression that she is not so bad of a hero now! Both of her starting perks have a good synergy with Murmuring as +20 mana from the Child of the Woods allows you to use Berserk more often and Heroic Strike is incredibly powerful with Grove heroes thanks to the Burst of Energy. Also an extra crystal every turn isn’t that bad of a deal on Exodus and Harmony and should certainly help building double Quilins before the first battle.

Balance patch is very, very problematic

It's absolutely wild how the balance patch manages to adress ALL the problematic issues of the game but somehow in a wrong way. Basically it doesn't change meta, just makes it weirder

New avatar is now better in PVE (while cannot be as broken in PVP)
Giving buffs to avatar specialists is thus even more crazy (just as buffing Halon (as if the devs are making sure that he'll stay perma-banned))
Hero Strike is still way overpowered
Buffs for Schism for Single Hero mode and no buffs for Classic is just making a problem worse
No nerfs for Dread Knights is insane
Hive not getting any buffs except for being able to build Waurms on 112 is leading to a one-track gameplay which isn't good for anybody -- and it also makes no changes for the Grove build-order even more offensive. At least Hive had a good T5 unit unlike Grove as a compensation for its god-awful buildorder for T6 and T7, while Grove still has to suffer to get T6 or try not to bleed its T1-T4
The reason to add 250 gold to the price of T1 dwellings is completely beyond me

There are definitely some welcome changes that fix minor issues, but the way how the devs approached the major problems is baffling. In my opinion they might as well revert this patch and start from scratch, because any fluctuation from the current course cannot lead to a better result, just to a more complicated one

The core-problem in my opinion is trying to balace all the 3 game modes at the same time. I doubt that it will ever be doable and I would suggest devs to focus on 3 separate balances for the 3 game modes. The game is complex as it is, there is no way to fix every aspect for every mode in such a way, that it works properly for all the game modes simultaneously

Grove Buildorder for Exodus

What is your preferred building order for Grove on Exodus? I’m still learning the faction and can’t yet consider myself an expert on this matter, however, it seems to me that you basically have two options for week one: Rush phoenixes or stack T1-T3 with an addition of T5 if you are playing as a Magic hero.

Currently I’m mostly playing the second option and I’m not even sure if phoenixes are effective to build on week 1. Has anybody tried focusing on building T6? I had one game where I managed to build double t6 by 117 it was a pain but worked like a charm

I did some lore research, and here’s what I found according to the unit descriptions in the game.

  1. Angels that the Temple can recruit as its T7 unit are merely imitations of real angels, created via some semi-magical, semi-scientific rite. This rite is supposedly performed in “heavily protected buildings,” where the highest church officials construct angels, most likely using machinery of the Ancients (i.e., the creators of the planet Enroth, where the story takes place).

  2. From the Archangels’ description, we find out that angels are created by placing a human soul into what is basically a golem or an animatronic construct — the Temple’s angel.

  3. The description of Apotheosis reveals the reasons why angels abandoned the Temple’s cause. They were not as intolerant, bereft of mercy, or zealous as the Temple demanded them to be.

But where did the real angels go?

To find an answer, one has to complete the challenge of clearing a map object called the Point of Balance. After defeating its guard, the player is rewarded with a Sentinel of Glory joining their army. And it seems that they are the real deal!

  1. The Sentinels left the Temple to “serve the balance between the Four Scholars of Magic,” an explanation that doesn’t yet make much sense. However, some information can be found in the Sentinels’ abilities, which are…

  2. Arina’s/Naira’s/Doreath’s/Hksmilla’s Way, which are most likely related to the Daylight, Night, Arcane, and Primal magic scholars. Also, it’s clear from the images that Doreath (the Arcane magic scholar) is connected with dragons, and Hksmilla (the scholar of Primal magic) looks and sounds like something coming from either the Hive or the Grove.

And it seems that the Sentinels serve neither all of these scholars nor any particular one, but rather “the balance between” them. It’s likely that through this balance, they are able to use all four schools of magic at once, achieving some sort of divine equilibrium.

  1. Let’s return to the Point of Balance and to its guardians — the Worldwatchers. Their description claims that Worldwatchers were created by Sentinels to “report to their masters and see if anything needs to be fixed.” If that’s true, it’s reasonable to speculate that Worldwatchers observe instances of imbalance in the world and report them to Sentinels so they can “fix” them. The description of the Point of Balance hints that the Worldwatchers should be spying on the Temple as the Sentinels are “cautious of the Church's expanding influence." Maybe the Sentinels see the Church’s affiliation with the Daylight magic as an instance of imbalance? Because, after all, it’s the balance between the Four Scholars of Magic the Sentinels are serving now. But who are these scholars?

  2. The description of the Temple of Four Scholars, (posted by Unfrozen here https://www.reddit.com/r/OldenEra/s/zMdwTqTL0n) states that they were powerful and creative mortals now revered as gods. That explains why a peasant NPC in the first mission of the campaign refers to Arina as a goddess. But even though the Scholars are mortals, they are not dead yet, because according to the Four Scholars Shrine map object’s description “Arina, Naira, Doreath, and Hksmilla still walk Enroth. And by communing with them, they can guide heroes onto new paths”.

For now, I’m not ready to speculate or come up with major hypotheses about what’s going on with angels, but there are some questions worth investigating:

What are the protected buildings that the Temple uses to create angels?

Which part of Enroth do Scholars still walk? Jadame? Antagarich?

Do the Sentinels follow the Ancients’ orders, obey the Four Scholars or act on their own?

Also, if each Scholar represents a school of magic, shouldn’t there be a fifth Scholar responsible for the neutral magic?

The list of questions goes on. Where else do you think I should search for answers? Artifact descriptions seem like the most logical place to continue!

I think it’s not a coincidence that the penguins living in the Schism’s snow biome resemble the albino-penguins from Howard Lovecraft’s “Mountains of Madness” so much!

Also a bonus picture of mushroom cows that I just adore

To those who have played the classic RPGs, how strong is the resemblance between how factions are represented in OE and M&M 8? Were Temple people as insufferable in the RPG as they are in the OE campaign?

It’s the sword that particularly amazes me. So many beautiful subtle details such as the guard that looks like a leaf and amber drops on the blade. Usually I don’t care for elvish factions in fantasy. But Grove is just a new level. I think it’s the combination of Rampart, Conflux and Sylvan from HoMM V that does the trick

I’m in tears. Never in my life I would have imagined that I’ll see both the rebirth of the HoMM series and of this meme. Praise Enroth and the liquid gold.
