Why does this room look so bad?

Why does this room look so bad?

So, I'm working on a test version of the game I want to make to experiment with some stuff, and I can't shake off the feeling that the first scene in the game feels flat and unappealing. I am quite happy with the props I made for the room, but it's like when they're all together it doesn't work out (I know there are still some stuff missing, like the top of the walls in the area where the couch and fireplace are).

One of the reasons why I think that's happening is the floor. I think if I make a wood plank floor instead of the basic wooden quare one I'm using, there will be more details, and then the whole place might look better.

I also noticed my shelves have a very dull wood colour in comparison to the rest of the room's colors, and that the books I made are too big in comparison to the rest of the props.

Lastly, I really dislike the bright green carpet lol. I think it's too saturated in comparison to the rest of the room, and it's too much green, when most of the palette is red, brown and gold.

Any advice is much appreciated!

How can I make this walking animation better?

I'm currently working on fixing my character's design perspective to match my top down game, but I've been unsatisfied with her animation since I finished it, so I want to take this opportunity to make it better.

I do see some of the mistakes I made, like how the red fabric on the skirt moves weirdly sometimes, especially in the back view, how the profile walk cycle has a different pace than the front and back, and how her head looks ginormous from the back. Other than that, what else could I improve?

My character's sketchy design vs the pixelart version

This is a comparison of Nadia's turnaround that I made a while ago vs her game design >:)

I still want to do some fixing on her design and animations (for example, I don't rly like the back of her head much, and I'll probably make her feet a bit bigger on the side view). Is there anything else you guys think I should change?

What do you think it's the biggest issue with Eastward?

I started developing an indie pixelart game a couple of months ago, and I wasn't fully sure what the genre of my game was until I found out about Eastward today. I felt like my game was a big mix of a bunch of stuff (top down pixel art, with metroidvania style maps, a cooking mechanic to replenish mana, abilities you can gain to keep accessing new areas of the map, heavily story based etc.), and I was scared maybe it was too much information for one game, but then I found Eastward and I thought it was very similar to the kind of game I want ot make.

My story is completely different, inspired by Slavic mythology with a hint of cozy horror, but still, a lot of the mechanics I decided to add to my game are also in Eastward.

The thing is, once I realized all that, I decided to look more into the game to understand if that style worked out well, but I found out that a lot of people disliked it, and many players got very disappointed with some parts of the game.

So I wanted to ask the people here what you think are the best and worst things about Eastward. From what I've seen, the game looks incredibly beautiful and seems very interesting, but I'd like to understand better what mistakes they made that kept it from being as popular as it could've been.

I'm developing a top down pixelart metroidvania game, is that a bad idea?

Hi everyone! I'm currently in the process of developing a pixelart metroidvania game, but I was doing some research on the subject and I realized it's quite rare to have this kind of game in a top down style. I understand that there are some mechanics that are not easy to implement in a pixelart top down metroidvania, like grappling hooks, climbable walls, etc, but to be honest, my game will be much more story based than fight based, and I feel like I can still make exploration interesting without those mechanics.

There will still be combat, a skill tree, artifacts, and powers that you can collect, along with other mechanics like cooking and interacting with NPCs, but a lot of the quests will be more about exploration and the story of the game than about killing bosses.

I feel like I can still make the game interesting with cool bosses and mechanics without it being the 2D platform style, but what do yall think?

Looking for interesting slavic magic artifacts to add to my game

Getting artifacts will be a very important part of the game, as it can affect the course of the player's story, and I want them to be collectable either by completing optional quests for mythological creatures or by being bought from two different merchants.

I already added a couple objects to the list, such as The Clew (owned by Baba Yaga), The Seven league boots, The apple of youth, and the live and dead water. I know of some other objects, like the flying carpet, The Kladenets Sword, or the  Self-served tablecloth, but I feel like those objects would be too OP and would make things too easy for the player.

If there's any other interesting objects that can help the main character but aren't going to make things too easy, I'd love to hear about them :)

The Baba Yaga design I made for my indie game

This is the concept art I made of Baba Yaga so far! In my game she will be more of a symbol of wisdom than a villain who eats children, but I think you can still tell that she's no saint lol.

The game itself is pixelart, so this is just the idea I had for her design. When the main character interacts with her, players will be able to see her face in a higher resolution.

Any thoughts about the design?

What interesting unpopular creatures and tales should I add to my game?

I'm making a cozy horror game inspired by Slavic mythology, and although I already know of creatures such as Baba Yaga, Kikimora, Leshy etc, I'd like to add other interesting, not so popular creatures to the game so my main character can interact with them. If you know of nice (or not) creatures from the folklores pls lmk!

I'd also like to bring some traditional tales into the game, maybe having some optional quests where Nadia (main character) goes through situations based on those tales, I'd like to go with dramatic and moving stories for some of those quests.

as a disclaimer, I'm not descended from any slav countries myself. I'm actually Brazilian, but my boyfriend's family is from Ukraine and I'm deeply interested in traditional slav mythology and culture, so if I'm a bit ignorant about some stuff bare with me :)

I finished the basic walking animations for my main character (for now)

After some time, I finally finished all of the walk and idle animations for my girl Nadia!

I'll try to focus on creating the tile sets for her room now, since it's gonna be the first scene in the game, and eventually I want to make running and attack animations, as well as a little motion for when she collects items around the map :)

How can I make this walking animation better?

I recently graduated as a 2D animator, but I have zero experience with pixelart animation and I'm having a bit of a hard time trying to make the animation look fluid while working with a limited amount of pixels and frames. If anyone has any tips or see something that I could change, I appreciate the feedback!

I recorded my screen so you can see each frame in the video. This is going to be the front walking animation for the game I'm developing.

I changed my character's design a bit so it fit's my top down game better, any thoughts or tips?

I made a post here a couple of days ago asking about character sizes, and someone advised me to try making the character more top-down to fit my game better, and so I did!

Both versions are the same size, but the perspective of the second one makes me feel like she's much younger than she actually is (19yo).

I still like the second design a lot tho, so I wanted to drop them both here and see what people think!

Is it a problem if my game character's size is 33 x 68?

I've started developing my own pixel art game recently (just started learning pixel art), and although I've been watching tutorials and doing research on how to make tile sets, I'm still not sure if having these proportions for my main character would really affect the development. I keep seeing everywhere that I should have the same proportions that most characters do (32 x 64, 32 x 32, etc), but I feel like if I add or cut even 1 pixel it's gonna mess up the design's symmetry. I really like how everything is spaced now.

So, should I just keep the design the way it is, or do you think this size is gonna bring me problems later?
