Lesbian Icon

Maybe she’s not underrated but she is definitely under appreciated.
Her lyrics don’t have to be super deep, because the way she shifted pop culture speaks volumes to her talent.
The subject matter of good luck babe are you kidding????
How was there a mainstream song explicitly about a lesbian situationship that never got censored or anything.
She’s in my opinion one of the best vocalists of this generation and her resilience through the whole smear campaign against her was so admirable.
And she’s bringing unapologetically proud music about being a lesbian to pop, so even if you’re not super woke / clued into pop culture you’d know Chappell.
God I love her

George Daniel Appreciation Post

He’s possibly the best producer of all time. I’m happy he’s getting the opportunity to work on his solo project and also work with other artists.
The 1975 as a band works so well because their producer is George, him and Matty are so symbiotic that they can always execute their artistic intentions perfectly.
Not to mention he’s a fantastic drummer.
I hope he starts getting a lot more mainstream recognition as a producer.

Sex - Drive Like I Do

Sex is undoubtedly their most iconic song. The story telling is straight forward and blunt, and feels universally relatable.
The song existed before the 1975 band title, it established them in their sound and identity before they knew the bands’ trajectory.
This specific performance is raw, they’re so young and are just having fun.
They don’t even particularly sound good in this, but it’s so intriguing seeing that the soul of ‘sex’ is heavily present, and they knew they were making something special.
One thing I love about the band is that they play their instruments/vocals with emotion rather than an overly technical approach. This video is the best example of this, which is what I really love about it.

“They don’t have one song where they need to be doing all that” - Are we discrediting the artistic expression of performance?

This saying is a very common joke that is told pretty much any time an artist has any form of stage presence. Whenever an artist tries to push the boundaries of live performances they’re met with that criticism. I mean, imagine if people said similar about vocalists: “they shouldn’t be trying so hard”.
This very specifically applies to the 1975 as Matty’s ‘consumption’ performance trended, and people didn’t know what to do about it.
I don’t know where the idea comes from that it’s cool to not care for artistic expression.
Live shows are supposed to be engaging and memorable, doesn’t the artist to some extent owe that to their fans?
For The 1975, it makes perfect sense why they give their all to the concerts. They’re all best friends who share extreme talent and who all deeply care about their art, so it adds up that they’d also care about the art of performing.
Matty had always been creatively clued in, sensitive, and genuinely interested in expanding his art across different forms.
The 1975 live are unmatched, because of the effort Matty puts into everything he does on stage. Caring for your art in the way that he does is what keeps people feeling inspired.
It’s cool to care.

If You’re Too Shy Let Me Know is the greatest pop song

This song is perfect in every sense. It’s a modern classic, sounds familiar but still feels original. The intro is heaven sent, lyrics thought provoking but not taking itself too seriously, and obviously it’s incredibly catchy. The saxophone plays a big part in this song, giving it The 1975 flair, it is such an underutilised instrument in modern pop music, and it’s given the chance to shine on the best sax solo ever on this song. It follows the formula of a perfect pop song and executes itself stunningly.
I really hope there’s at least one hit like she’s american, it’s not living, or too shy on the forthcoming album. I would adore another song similar to the sound, where everybody is fully engaged at their shows.

Live at The O2, London

The most mesmerising live show ever. The stage production, the live electronic based songs, and crowd are simply perfect. Watching the band all play so passionately together really feels like you’re watching something bigger than themselves happening.
Every song they play is either booming or incredibly moving. Can’t really watch it without getting emotional.
This being their first arena tour is beyond impressive, the way they can take full control of the atmosphere is so impressive.
They completely give themselves to their performances and it really helps you feel connected to the band.
Seeing them live was honestly one of the best things I have ever experienced.
They are very talented at making fans feel like they’re a part of the band.
The 1975 aren’t just Matty, George, Ross, Adam, and the fans, I think they have touched something divine and they brought it to fruition.

Box tattoo

Does anybody know how long it takes to tattoo the box? I’m getting it as my first tattoo so I really have no idea what to expect. The size i’ll be getting is the picture.

Rock Music & Pop Music

This song is the exact thing she should be doing after brat. She’s making “rock music” to point out how it’s a more respected genre than pop. Pop is an incredibly interesting genre and will continue to morph into something new over time. She’s also acknowledging the belief that good art only comes from suffering: “hurt yourself”. This idea is spread across across all art forms - the best and most well-known example being Van Gogh. Did Van Gogh make good art due to his suffering? No, he made good art despite his suffering.
Now that she’s a lot more mainstream post-brat she’s reaching a particular audience that doesn’t tend to look past the surface of lyrics. To them she’s coming across as a sellout, which is honestly so BRAT.
I love the ending of the song, it feels like Charli is literally cutting herself off to make a statement about her career, if she doesn’t make another album just like brat, people won’t want it. She’s enforcing the new era even if it risks losing popularity.
She’s an extremely talented artist and lyricist, which people tend to downplay by bringing up songs like ‘Club Classics’- which by the way is a masterpiece.
Her art gets undermined because it’s pop music so now she’s making “rock music”.

Public Perception of The 1975

Matty Healy sort of makes the band feel like an inside joke. Majority of people that know the band but aren’t fans think that his persona he plays is actually what he’s like. When people say they “can’t stand the 1975” 90% of the time they’re actually just talking about Matty Healy.
I think they’re a pretty palatable band, at least with their singles/most popular songs. What makes them slightly more niche than they should be is Matty’s character that he plays. I really love this about the band, it makes them feel more exclusive. A lot of people I know had claimed to not like The 1975, but when they actually gave the music a chance they enjoyed it.
For me, I got into them after their Madison Square Garden show because of ‘Consumption’. I was like “Who is this guy? Why the hell are people choosing to see this?” So naturally I was curious and listened to some of their stuff and I’ve been hooked since.
There’s not a lot of artists from this generation that give you more to think about other than the music. Their performance pieces in their live shows, Matty’s ‘act’, and how the public perceives them ultimately make the band 10 times more interesting.
Especially after Taylor Matty got so much publicity from people who don’t quite understand what he’s about. Not even trying to defend him but after their relationship hatred for the band was blown way out of proportion.

A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships

Whenever I listen to this album, I’m really surprised it’s not the fan favourite. I adore iliwys, but I think it’s missing the accountability and self-awareness that abiior and onwards has - mainly due to Matty’s sobriety. ‘Give Yourself A Try’ and ‘It’s Not Living If It’s Not With You’ are the first time Matty acknowledges his addiction with the clarity of having been through it.
‘Give Yourself A Try’ has a repetitive nature with the chorus and instrumental that continues to beg you to forgive and love yourself, this only being possible due to Matty’s own experience of deciding to reflect on his own life.
This album is also where we see George’s best production, ‘How To Draw’ is an attentive and genius showcase of his talent.
‘Love It If We Made It’ has bold and aggressive instrumentals and almost screams the lyrics to you. The lyrics are objective, they cannot be questioned or argued with. The chorus is filled with determination with a glimmer of hope. The tracks loudness is also present in ‘I Like America & America Likes Me’ where the momentum of being forced to be a witness to the political outrage is continued - “please listen”. But these two tracks still provide the comfort of not being alone with your own anger.
With ‘The Man Who Married A Robot’ we are forced to look at ourselves through an uncomfortable lens. The story described is objective truth, only that the internet has been personified. It makes you feel the weight of being in a dystopian society, where human connection seems to be becoming out of reach. This track is where a lot of people are deterred by the siri voice, but I think the best art explores the duality of comfort and unfamiliarity - A lot of people skip this song, which is unfair to the albums overall message, the track is completely necessary to fully understand the album.
The rawness of ‘Inside Your Mind’ is breathtaking. The mix of romantic and violent visuals are mesmerising, perfectly encapsulating the desperation of being completely in love with someone and wanting to know their entire being.
A quite melancholic part of the album is abruptly put to an end with ‘Its Not Living If It’s Not With You’. Matty is painfully honest about his experience with drugs, describing it like a romantic relationship. He acknowledges the complicated nature of addiction , he’s sober but he was relying on substances for a big part of his life.
The personal nature of ‘Surrounded By Heads And Bodies’ feels so vulnerable you almost want to look away. Through experiencing empathy for Angela, I think Matty was fully able to forgive himself and come to terms with his addiction, which is integral to the album.
The album offers a solution after the dread it showcased with ‘I Always Wanna Die (Sometimes)’, with the lyric “if you can’t survive, just try” The bold outro offers you the unique opportunity to reflect on the listening experience, while the album is still playing. The album dares you to personally connect to it.
This is what I’ve always admired about The 1975, they want you to be emotionally invested and intertwine the music with your life. A brief inquiry is my favourite album of all time and after every listen I’m still discovering more about it.
I truly think it’s the bands’ masterpiece.
