Minimum checked baggage weight?

Flying from Brussels to Barcelona, and my employer has bought me a ticket with a checked bag. However my bag only weighs 2.6kg.

It's not yet time for check-in but I went to the Vueling desk to ask if I could check it in immediately so I can go through security.

She asked how heavy the bag was and told me it was too light and might get lost. She wanted me to take it into the cabin but I can't do that because there is restricted stuff in it.

Is there actually a minimum weight? I can't see anything on Vueling's website. Is there a real risk of it getting lost?

If there is a minimum weight, what do I do? Any hints other than buying water?!

Getting nationality - parents' towns/places of birth

My parents' places of birth are both listed as Middlesex on my birth certificate. Cerfa 15277 asks for town of birth.

Do I ask my parents for their towns of birth and put them on the form, or do I put Middlesex? My guess is the officer handling my application won't care as long as they match...

(for those who don't know, Middlesex is an old county of England that is now either part of Greater London or other counties, ie it doesn't exist any more)

What dropping is this?

I found it on the floor of my kitchen, it was bone dry and stuck fast to the middle, northern France. 1cm long, flaky appearance (not smooth nor ribbed). When I finally dislodged it, a few crumbs came loose but it otherwise stayed intact. You can see the brown stain left on the floor. The floor is ceramic btw.

AI is telling me it's a "fly puparium" but I'm not 100% convinced. It was next to a bag of dry food shopping that had been left for a few days. No sign of damage to the bag nor the food, and this is the only one I've found. I'd say my kitchen was clean but perhaps a bit cluttered, if that helps!

Collecting someone in a campervan from Beauvais airport

I must collect someone from Beauvais airport, I'm driving a campervan. It's 2.4m tall, which suggests it won't fit in "dépose minute" - what are my options?

New signs at Dover

I crossed to France last night. There are new signs on the A2 as you descend Jubilee Way in Dover, I only got a photo of the gantry next to the roundabout at the bottom of the bridge.

When those grey squares are removed and the EU nationals are all turning right into the port while the Brits have to turn left to go to the Western Docks for 'processing', I think that's going to really make it hit home for a lot of Brits what has been lost...

Getting the 2For1 ticket for the Tower of London

I'll soon be staying in Elephant and Castle and am hoping to use the 2For1 offer to visit the Tower of London on Monday 13th July. We are two adults, a 16 year old and a 12 year old.

TfL's 2For1 offer is easier to use than the National Rail offer because AIUI you don't need to print a voucher, and obviously we'll already be well within the TfL system so getting a train ticket should be unnecessary.

However I'm not sure how to get the best of the offer; we have a single anonymous Oyster card and the original plan was for everyone else to use contactless to pay for our transport but I don't think contactless shows up on the TFL app until the next day.

Therefore I have a few questions about how to approach it and how 'helpful'/cooperative/strict the staff at the ticket office are likely to be:

  • Could we rely on the ticket office seeing "yesterday's" taps as proof that "today" we came by TFL?
  • in terms of "exploiting the offer", logically the best option is two purchases (adult+adult, 16yo+12yo), but I'm aware a child isn't allowed to go in on their own, so again it's down to a question of how picky the staff are, I think. Obviously we'd actually enter the Tower together.

Also, if the app delay is likely to cause a problem, is it better to buy a second Oyster card?

Tree cover in the Brecon Beacons?

I'm hoping to come to the Brecon Beacons next week, I'll be staying with my family near Monmouth (coming all the way from France!) and would like to see the landscapes and go on a few walks...

However the forecast is looking pretty hot to say the least!

I know there's not much tree cover in the Brecon Beacons, so am looking for a few ideas for us to get out and about without getting sunburn.

For example is the Four Waterfalls Walk basically in woodland? I've seen photos that suggest it is.

We'll be two adults, plus a 16 and a 12 yo.

Any experience of the Vexilar/Vactidy C8?

I'm looking for a cheap corded stick vacuum with LEDs on the head. I'm fed up with tugging my albeit good Moulinex around the house, and would prefer something lighter.

The house is exclusively tiled, no carpet at all (a mat by each door), and no pets. Therefore it's just dust balls and a few long hairs.

I've seen the Vexilar/Vactidy C8 for about £70 which looks like it would fill the bill but am a bit wary of brands I've never heard of!

Any thoughts or recommendations for another model?
