Canister vacuum for hardwood floors/area rugs/pets?

Hi all, I am sorely in need of a new vacuum cleaner. I have all hardwood floors with just a few area rugs, and I have a large dog that sheds an insane amount. I vacuum pretty much daily. I currently have an upright Shark that I absolutely loathe, and I definitely want to switch to a bagged canister vacuum. In the limited research that I’ve done, I’ve seen repeated recommendations for the Miele Classic C1 Pure Suction, but I’ve also seen some pretty negative reviews specifically about its floorhead. Anybody have any insight on this? Or other recommendations that would meet my needs? I’m honestly looking to spend as little as possible while still getting something quality that will hopefully last a good while. The Miele is just over $300 on amazon right now, which feels doable. I could maybe go $400 but really don’t want to go any higher if at all possible. Thanks!

Indoor air quality survey for thesis research

Hi, I'm Max, an italian university student.
I'm writing my thesis and I need your help.

I'm researching air quality in domestic spaces — a topic that's rarely discussed, but affects us every day. This questionnaire will help me understand how people experience and perceive the air in their homes.
It only takes 6 minutes: little for you, everything for my research.

Should I get a robot vacuum or a wet-dry mop? (Hard floors + kitchen, budget ~$300, USA)

Budget: $300 | Flooring: All hard floors (vinyl plank), 2-bedroom apt | No pets | USA

Moving into a 2-bedroom apartment, all hard floors. Kitchen gets messy. No pets. Budget around $300.

Trying to decide between:

  • Robot vacuum for daily automatic cleaning
  • Wet-dry vac mop for deeper manual cleaning
  • Or both if I can afford it

I keep reading that robots just smear kitchen messes, and wet-dry vacs collect dust if you don't use them daily. Is the "both" setup overkill for an apartment?

If you had $300 to spend and all hard floors, what would you get?

New Vac 🇦🇺

Hi People

I am an Aussie after a new vacuum cleaner. I had a dyson DC20 - the clunkiness and cord annoyed me. I was going to get a dyson stick. A salesman said Shark or Samsung is better.

This sub seems to say no shark, no sticks; get a bagged vacuum.

Sebo is mentioned a lot, I wonder about parts etc in Australia. The Miele C1 turbo got a lot of love. I was thinking of getting one of the Miele guards? At least it’s not huge.

My house is 100m squared (328 feet squared / 109 yards sq.)

It is 75% low pile (my fingers don’t sink?) carpet and 25% tile.

Are there any recommendations? Whether it be for one of the guards or whatever

I am tall and using a short vacuum stick hurts my back after a while

I don’t have a dog but will in future and I do dog sit for a friend now and then

Thank you kindly.

PS no sales rep or bots please

To appease moderator post:

Stores; Jbhifi, Harvey Norman, The Good Guys

Budget: Flexible, $500 AU would go up to $750 if it was worth it

Cordless Vacuum Recommendations

My wife is looking to add a quality cordless vacuum to the arsenal and as a good husband I want to help her out. So I’m turning to Reddit 😂 cause I don’t know vacuums.

She’s done some research and has narrowed it down to Dyson, Shark, or Bissell. Looking for something with good battery life, strong suction, be good on carpeted floors, and be functional. Hoping to stay at or below $400.

Please let me know if you have a favorite brand or specific model that blew you away or you can’t live without. TYIA!!

End of an era

After almost 40 years my local vac shop is closing its doors. Unfortunately, it's not an uncommon occurrence. Spent a lot of time and well, money there. Learned a lot and it's going to be sad to see it go. Did offer to sell it to me but yeah, not sure that's the best idea.

As a parting gift he left me this behemoth. Why? He raved about Riccar and Tandem Air being great. I raved about how useless IMO it is. So as gesture of goodwill and well let's face it, a good test to see if he would win the debate, he gifted me this Simplicity s30d. I've never owned a Tandem Air or cared to ever really buy one to test out. It was a floor model so it was somewhat taken care of, but it was his last day before literally moving out so he said it might need a quick over. Has all new filters, bags, brushroll, and hose. Any tips on what to check or replace? Any tips on ownership do's and dont's.

Also, is this pretty much a Riccar r30d? Like if I needed a part, would they cross fit? And are riccar bags or filters any different than simplicity.

Thank you!

Help Me Decide

I can't decide between a Sebo E1 or a Miele C3/Guard M1

I'm leaning towards the Sebo, it's "repair friendly" and has a good spare parts supply. I like to look after things and keep them for as long as possible.

Open to any advice that may be a deal breaker either way.

Small house, all hardwood floors.

I would prefer a quiet machine

Thanks

Acquired!

Aquired! Don’t plan on keeping or using just merely a baby collector wanting to pass it along to someone else! Only issue is the box is aged and the lady who sold it too me opened it just to verify it’s NIB but other than that it’s still in its OG packaging! Best guess from anywhere between 2000-2007?? I remember these at Fred’s and Walmart as a kid meaning it probably sucked but so weird seeing these boxes again!

What is happening with NIB 20 year old shampooers right now? This is the third one in 24 hours and weirdly enough we had one of these as a kid and it was good just bulky

Sebo Customer Service

About a month ago I made a post regarding some shocks I received from my Sebo E3 Premium in my first week of purchasing.

I contacted Sebo right after and they asked me to wipe down the machine again and try again in which I received another shock.

Sebo arranged a collection for the item to do some checks on it. However, they found no faults.

Now they are charging me handling fees which were never explained to me when they first asked me to do a collection. The alternative is that they send the item back to me which I don't feel comfortable with since I'm around children and pets and I do believe there is an issue with the machine.

I live in a normal house with standard carpeting and they're attributing the shocks to humidity or my carpet being the issue.

No fees were ever explained to me prior. The agent herself said on call, which was recorded, that she never explained handling fees to me over the phone as she herself believed they would find a fault and fix it. I don't want to pay any extra fees which were never explained to me prior to arranging a collection.

Has anyone ever had similar experiences or dealt with customer service before? I'm not sure how to proceed.

Many thanks to any replies.

[Makita XGT/40v] - Is a powered brush head necessary if you don't plan on vacuuming carpet?

Looking to purchase a Makita XGT (40v) vacuum and looking for recommendations. Have a bunch of their batteries ranging from 4ah to 8ah.

Their newest model (CL004) has a brushed/powered head.

If we have hard floors and no carpet really other than a couple small entry rugs, is it necessary to get a powered/brushed head?

Any recommendations from this community on the best XGT vacuum to get? Is HEPA filtration worth it?

Commercial Cleaner Looking for a Professional Vacuum

I own my own janitorial business and have started taking on commercial clients and my current vacuum isn’t cutting it. I’m looking to purchase a professional vacuum that is durable, reliable, and does an excellent job. My budget is $1000. I’d love to pick up a 2nd one for my employee. I’m curious what this subreddit would recommend. I’ve been told to look into Windows Versamatic 14s but it sounds like there might be some issues with the bags?

This area is far from my realm of expertise and I’d be unbelievably grateful for some guidance!!! Thank you to anyone who can help!

Edit:
Will be used on a wide range of carpets and hard wood flooring. Transported to different jobs regularly. I’d prefer a upright vacuum

New carpet, new vacuum so hard to push, too much suction?

Just had new carpet installed, per the product description is Medium Pile (0.301 in to 0.550 in). Also purchased a new Shark Navigator Lift Away to care for the new carpet better since we previously used a Dyson V8.

Using the new Shark on the carpet, it is so hard to push, even with the suction bypass on the handle opened up for less suction, and it feels like it is pulling the carpet up and hard to maneuver.

Any suggestions on a fix, different vacuum, or just keep using the Dyson?

Cleaning after pets is hard! The vacuum then mop debate makes it harder.

I’m not trying to start a holy war in here, but I think I accidentally became one of those people who has opinions about floor order. I have pets, mixed hard floors, one rug that should probably be retired, and a vacuum that is “fine” in the very Reddit sense where half of you will tell me it’s garbage and half will say use it until it dies. My old routine was mop whenever the floor felt gross. No real vacuuming first unless there was visible hair. Then I wondered why the mop pad looked like I dragged it through a raccoon den. So I started vacuuming slowly first, especially edges and under food bowls, then doing a damp mop with a fresh pad. It absolutely looks cleaner. Smells cleaner too. But I keep seeing people make huge claims about mopping after vacuuming and pet bacteria, and tbh I don’t know where the line is between “less debris for the mop to smear around” and “actual hygiene improvement.”

My gut says dry pickup first matters more than fancy solution. Also bagged people, I hear you, I know, I know. But for pet homes, is the real win airflow and agitation before moisture, or am I overthinking a floor my dog is going to drool on again in 12 minutes?

Most Iconic Roomba Of All Time?

hello Roomba enthusiasts! I have actually had to make a Reddit account to talk to people. On that note I truly do appreciate your interest in Roombas and I think it’s bad ass to be passionate anyways I am working on an art project and I want to coat a Roomba in a material I’m not gonna get into the details because my art is so secretive and so hidden (I’m joking. It’s one of my first pieces) but anyways, I want to know if you guys what is the most iconic Roomba like whether it be OG or just the best version of a Roomba I’m curious what you guys decide is the proper item that you would turn into Roomba art! I don’t really care about the technology of its vacuuming, more just iconic silhouettes. I appreciate all feedback and I love you guys’s community! thanks for reading.

Advice on what I should get as a growing family with lots of pets?

Hi there! I’m expecting my first child with my partner and we’re looking at important buy it for life items. We’re in the process of buying a house and so we don’t know yet what our house will look like, but it’ll probably be a mix of hardwood and carpets. My floors right now are COVERED in fur with 4 cats (and we eventually want to add dogs into the mix) plus the cat litter that gets tracked everywhere. The idea of my baby getting litter and fur all over them just by crawling…I’d like to mitigate that as much as possible. We also have really bad allergies, and one of the cats has asthma so the best filters are important. Should we also look into a robot vacuum as well for day to day maintenance? If so, any recommendations there? Money isn’t the concern. I’ve heard Sebo is better than Miele. If so, which model? Thank you for help and suggestions!

Sturdy, maneuverable vacuum on a limited budget

Hello! So my Dyson Ball Multi Floor 2 just died, the wand function anyway. I got it in 2020 so I really got a good life out of it, for these newer flimsier Dyson uprights. (Before that I had a Dyson DC15 for 12 years, amazing machine.)

Anyway, I am not sure what to replace it with. I definitely want a bagged vacuum. There are excessive amounts of cat hair and dust in here, as well as a wool carpet that sheds insanely (one vacuuming can fill up almost fill up the canister, STILL, and I've had it for five years).

So I need a good vacuum that will take abuse and be easy to unclog. Cat toys are everywhere and can get sucked up - the Dyson was simple to unclog whenever this happened. It will have to vacuum up cat litter particles in addition to all the dust, wool, and cat hair previously mentioned.

Next thing: I live in a tiny apartment, 600 square feet, unfortunately crammed with furniture. Mix of hardwood floors and area rugs of varying pile height. So it needs to be easily maneuverable.

It either needs to be an upright with a wand function, or a canister. I've never had a canister before so im not sure about it. Def corded and not a stick.

My budget is about $400 in reality but I would love to see your recommendations up to about $800 in case I choose the buy it for life option. Thanks if you read all this and have any advice.

Robot schedules are hard! Family schedules make them worse.

I swear every time I look up robot vacuums I end up more confused than when I started. One group says run it at 9am every day and your floors will never get bad. Another group says robots are toys and you still need a real vacuum. Both are probably right and both are making me tired lol. My house does not have a “normal” schedule. Some days the baby naps at 10, some days my partner works nights, some days the dog decides the hallway is his emotional support runway. So when people say “just schedule it daily” I’m like ok but daily when? I’m not expecting deep carpet cleaning from a little robot. I still get that a proper vacuum matters when dust is packed into rugs and filters get clogged and suction drops.

But for the everyday layer of hair, crumbs, dirt near the door, and whatever the kids tracked in, I’m wondering if room based scheduling and quiet cleaning are actually the real features to pay for, not maximum suction numbers. Anyone here actually made one work around a changing family schedule without it becoming another chore? Or is the honest answer that the robot helps only if your house is already kinda organized?
