I was laid off for the third time in 3 years 7 months ago. I am done with tech startups but with this record I can’t even get an interview now. I am not a low performer, but I suppose that record does not look good in a super competitive market. It perhaps looks even worse that 2 of the companies went bankrupt, which is out of my control. I don’t know what to do at this point. I have not had a single interview in 4 months even after applying to probably 500 jobs and I physically want to throw up if I have to fill out another application. I have contacted anyone and everyone I know for referrals. Applied to roles a level or two lower. Removed the last 2 years and acted like I just did contract work during this time while looking. It has made no difference. This feels to hopeless and pointless…even waking up these days feels like a chore.

I was laid off some months ago and got an offer with a bigger company recently. Job is Director level and they offered me top of their salary band (not much better than my last salary though, maybe by 1%). I was excited for a few days until I read their very blanket employment contract which has a bizarrely written noncompete. I don’t feel like paying for a lawyer to review this and AI tells me this is unusually aggressive but is enforceable where I live. They also have some other weird terms that I don’t want to disclose here but I never saw on any other contract and don’t feel comfortable signing. Negotiations didn’t go anywhere. They didn’t budge on equity, they are giving me none, and no changes to any of the pre-written agreements. I don’t have a job but I have good experience and great pedigree and feel if I got one offer I can get more. With the noncompete the option of take and keep looking does not exist. Is walking away a mistake?

Update: thanks all for the support. I spoke to a few people in leadership levels in my network and we came to an agreement that it didn’t make sense to restrict my career if the company didn’t reduce the risk with pre-ipo stocks. Clarifying something else, it is not worth being a people leader without being compensated appropriately. I much prefer getting an IC role even if the pay is less over uncompensated leadership. The irony here is that considering the absence of shares from this company, many senior IC roles today pay significantly more than this in total comp.

After months of looking I got an offer better than my last job! Putting this out here to say there is a light at the end of this for anyone else looking. Issue is I am also mid-interviewing for even a better job. I am afraid if I tell the other company they might just cross me off the list instead of speeding things up since I don’t know if they can move this fast. But don’t want to drag my feet with these guys either and lose the offer in hand. Also logic says I should not lose this offer until the other company has already done reference and background checks. All of that is if they even give an offer. What should I do?
