A country should never be afraid of its own students. Students are not asking for privilege. They are asking for accountability. For answers. For justice. The response to peaceful voices should be dialogue…. not fear, not force. When those who are unarmed are treated as enemies, pointed guns at, lathi charged, every citizen should ask themselves a simple question:

Who is the State protecting, and who is it protecting itself from?

Patriotism has never meant blind obedience. Patriotism is loving your country enough to demand that it lives up to its own Constitution. It is believing that no government is above criticism. The Republic is not.
A nation that begins to see students as anti-national simply because they ask difficult questions is not becoming stronger. It is becoming afraid. Democracy doesn't die the day people stop voting. It begins to die the day people become afraid to question power. Today it was students.
Tomorrow it could be journalists. Teachers. Doctors. Workers. Or you.
History has never remembered those who demanded silence. It has remembered those who had the courage to speak despite it.

If Bhagat Singh were alive today, would we celebrate his courage or would we first call him anti-national for daring to question those in power?

That question should make every patriot uncomfortable.

Can a democracy truly function when its citizens no longer feel compelled to pay attention? Somewhere along the way, we've become spectators to our own country's problems. We consume politics like endless content, debate for a few hours, choose a side, and then scroll to the next headline. The outrage fades long before the consequences do.

A hunger strike is among the oldest forms of peaceful protest because it asks the public one simple thing: to stop, notice, and question. Whether you agree with Sonam Wangchuk is secondary. The real question is why concerns over the integrity of an examination system affecting millions of students struggle to command sustained public attention.

Instead of asking what went wrong, who should be held accountable, or how trust in public institutions can be restored, we spend more time debating the credibility of the person speaking than the issue being raised. It's a pattern that repeats itself every time someone protests.

Support for an issue shouldn't depend on complete agreement with the individual behind it. But we’ve somehow managed to convince ourselves that unless a messenger clears every ideological purity test, their message itself deserves to be ignored. It’s an impossible standard that only serves those already in power.

The most worrying trend isn't disagreement, it's indifference. Democracies can survive fierce arguments. They struggle when people stop caring enough to ask difficult questions.

Maybe the greatest threat isn't a single scandal or a single institution failing. Maybe it's a society that has become so accustomed to crisis that it no longer feels shocked by it.

A democracy isn't weakened only by those who abuse power. It's weakened when the rest of us slowly stop demanding better.

Today I went to Mumbai after a long time. I've always had a habit of walking around and exploring cities instead of just going from one place to another.
What struck me was how little some things seem to have changed.
The rich seem richer. The poor seem just as poor. People are still living in unhygienic conditions. The population keeps rising. It stirred emotions I've had since childhood about a country I genuinely love.
India has grown tremendously. We've gone from being a developing economy to one of the world's largest economies. There is innovation, ambition, talent, and progress everywhere. But at the same time, I still see people without proper homes, food security, or dignity.
Sometimes I feel most people don't want to judge these things too deeply. They just want to stay happy, safe, and get on with their lives. And maybe that's understandable.
People might say I only feel this way because I'm privileged. Maybe that's partly true. But when you see people living in conditions most of us would never accept for ourselves, can we really understand their suffering? Can we honestly say everything is fine?
I work in healthcare, and if I'm being honest, a large reason I chose this path comes from these emotions. Since childhood, I've wanted my work to contribute, however little, to improving people's lives in this country.
What makes a country "great"?
Is it GDP? Military strength? Ancient history? Culture? Global influence?
Or is it whether a child goes to sleep hungry? Whether a family has access to healthcare? Whether people can live with dignity?

A thought keeps coming back to me:* *

Mai nahi manta mera desh duniya ka sabse mahaan desh hai

And I don't think saying that means I love it any less.
Because my view is simple: This is my country. I love it. I am proud of many things about it. I am ashamed of some things about it. And because it is mine, I want it to become better.
