My painting of simpler times when we were kids and knew no limits [OC]

I made this painting for an open call at the National Football Museum in Manchester. It wasn’t selected, and while I was a little disappointed, that’s just part of being an artist.

For me, football here is really about the memories that come with it: childhood, playing until sunset, first victories, first disappointments, friendship, and that feeling that the whole world was open to you.

With the World Cup going on, I hope this painting can bring back a few good memories for someone else too.

Giving you all a huge virtual hug!

Taking part in Liverpool Art Fair this year

Really happy to be part of Liverpool Art Fair this year 🩵 Three of my paintings were selected for the exhibition and two are on display in the Royal Liver Building. One of them features the building itself, so seeing it shown in the place it depicts feels especially meaningful.

The exhibition runs at the Royal Liver Building, Liverpool from 12th June to 26th July 2026. Open 12–5, seven days a week, free entry.

If you're in Liverpool, it's well worth a visit. Great mix of work from artists across the region 💙🩷!!

It's a real honour to be exhibiting at Liverpool Art Fair for a second year.

This year marks the fair's 10th anniversary. Three of my paintings were selected for the exhibition and two are on display in the Royal Liver Building. One of them features the Royal Liver Building itself so seeing that painting exhibited in the very building it depicts is something I'm particularly proud of.

If you're in Liverpool between 12 June and 26 July, do stop by 🩷 There’s a fantastic range of work on display from artists across the region.

Two of my paintings were selected for an exhibition

It’s the fair’s 10th anniversary this year and I’m happy to be back. Three of my paintings were selected for the exhibition and two ended up on display. Last year there was just one so that felt like a nice surprise. One thing that makes this exhibition extra rewarding for me is that my seagull painting features the Royal Liver Building in the background and now it's being exhibited inside that very building 🩵

My latest oil painting of two Shima Enaga birds

Two tiny fluffballs on a 30 × 30 cm (11.8 × 11.8 inches) canvas. I’m still experimenting with different palette knife shapes and solvents.

An oil painting I made as a birthday gift for my mum. Hope she likes it

I painted these two Shima Enaga birds as a birthday gift for my mum.

We live quite far apart these days and don’t get to see each other as often as we’d like, so these two tiny fluffballs felt a bit like us. A small reminder that distance doesn’t really change the important things.

My sketches vs the final results

While preparing for an upcoming exhibition, I was going through some old sketches and realized how different a lot of the finished paintings look from the original idea. Some of these started as quick little scribbles, so it was fun to put them side by side and see how they changed along the way 💜💙

Making these sketches is also how I plan my work. Every few months I sit down, brainstorm ideas and sketch out a rough pipeline for the next six months or so. I don’t really treat it as a strict plan because things always change, but it helps me keep track of what I want to make and where different ideas might lead. I keep all the sketches on the wall so they’re always visible instead of buried in a sketchbook somewhere.

For me that’s probably the best way to deal with procrastination. Seeing future projects every day makes it easier to stay excited about them and it also helps me see how individual pieces might fit together as a series or even a future exhibition. Curious how other people handle this. Do you plan creative work ahead, or do you mostly figure it out as you go?

I painted seagulls over the Liver Building

I just wanted to share a little success with you guys. My painting of seagulls over the Liverpool waterfront has been selected for Liverpool Art Fair and will be on display at the Royal Liver Building from 12 June to 26 July. Entry is free, so if you're in the city, feel free to stop by. The building is beautiful inside and definitely worth a visit if you haven't been before.

The painting was inspired by the feeling of freedom that comes with flight. I wanted it to feel a bit like you're up there soaring alongside the birds.

It was also influenced by recent visits to the Turner exhibitions in Liverpool and at Tate Britain. I loved the warmth, light and atmosphere in his paintings, and I think some of that found its way into this piece.

Although seagulls often have a reputation for being troublemakers, I've always found them beautiful and elegant in their own way. They are incredibly adaptable birds, and I don't think they can really be blamed for learning to live alongside us after humans transformed so much of their natural habitat. That resilience is part of what drew me to them as a subject.

I was also inspired by recent visits to the Turner exhibitions in Liverpool and at Tate Britain. I fell in love with the warmth and glow in his paintings and spent some time experimenting with thinner, varnish diluted layers of oil paint to get a similar atmosphere. Most of the texture was built with sgraffito and serrated palette knives.
