Thermador KBUDT4850A02 48” built-in not cooling
Over the span of about 2 months, my Thermador KBUDT4850A02 (from 2005, same as Kitchen Aid models from that era) has gone from working fine, to kinda working, to not working at all. I thought I had an ice dam because of a door open event, but taking the cover off tonight… no.
The compressor runs, discharge side is hot, but the evaporator is barely cold with just a tiny bit of frost at the top.
Worth getting repaired?
What is even the point?
The whole “Net Worth Gallery” is the most pointless thing in the whole game.
Oh, for the first little bit it’s great - you get actual dice rewards, boosts to your regen rate, boosts to your daily treat rewards, and so forth.
And then once you reach 400 dice regen… there ain’t nothing to see here. It’s the old bait and switch. Nothing but piddly cash boosts to features that could be easily automated silently in the background (ie. it never advertises when the jail and tax penalties increase, but they always do). There is zero excitement. Zero to look forward to. Just a reminder that it used to be useful.
Why don’t they have actual dice rewards? Sticker packs? Boosts? Yeah I know “because they want you to pay money”, but this is the most anti-climatic waste of time next to Rent Frenzy or the “Big Win” Chance cards, and I would be happy if the whole thing was turned off and handled automatically.
From Rogers IDV: best option for 5 lines?
About a year ago I moved my 5 lines to a BYOD Rogers IDV plan in Ontario. $50 for 150gb US+Can shared data. It was fine. Within 2 months the price bumped to $54/month, needless to say I was ticked. At any rate, now my discounts are ending and the cheapest plan I can get is $65/month for 250gb which I just don’t need. Nobody is going through the data.
What other options are there for a basic Canada wide plan with 75+ gigs? I’m in a rural area so only Bell and Rogers networks are available to me.

It really is a never ending process…
A shift to 2.5g fiber internet prompted a desire to upgrade my old 1g network (see photo 3) to something better… and a month or so ago I finished my first-ever rack (salvage APC open frame) with some shiny new Ubiquiti gear, and a bunch of museum pieces.
Literally a week after it was all running, my already problematic Synology DS1815+ (C2000 bug affected) decided to become a bigger problem, so I went looking for a solution. No way I wanted to buy 8 x 12gb drives at today’s prices to move to a new platform, so luckily enough I managed to get a used RS2418+ for cheap and migrated my array.
So now, it’s rack v1.1! Ever a work in progress, I guess!
- APC 44U Open Frame Rack (salvage, I mounted on a plywood base with casters)
- Zeuslap Z16Lite Monitor (AliExpress)
- Ubiquiti Pro HD 24 Switch
- Ubiquiti Pro XG 10 POE Switch
- Ubiquiti Cloud Gateway Fiber
- Hitron NOVA-2002 ONT
- APC AP9537AV PDU (front)
- APC AP7930 PDU (rear)
- Dahua NVR16CH-16P-2AI NVR
- ThinkPad X1 6th (i7-8650U/16G)
- Synology RS2418+
- Netgear ReadyNAS Pro 6
- HP MediaSmart EX470 Windows Home Server (seriously)
- APC SURTA3000RMXL + battery pack
Having trouble picking a starter system for my in-laws…
Mostly want to be able to manage it remotely, do a wireguard link to my network, have isolated networks for them and their basement tenant. 1200sq foot bungalow, almost all wifi, very minimal wired needs (like 2), only has 300mbit cable and will likely never exceed gigabit service. Tight budget, since we’re replacing free ISP equipment.
System 1:
Dream Router 7
Basically all in one, catch is it has to either be installed in the furnace room where cable comes in, or an upstairs bedroom, the latter of which I worry about basement wifi coverage. There is a desire to move most equipment out the tenant’s space, but that’s not necessarily viable.
System 2:
Cloud Gateway Ultra
2 x U7 Lite (I have unused Unifi POE injectors I can use)
Better wifi, but I’m unable to do new wiring and there’s no way to ceiling mount on the main level so I’m iffy on how to mount it. I’m also uncertain of the Ultra’s gateway capabilities.
System 3:
Unifi Express 7
Flex Mini 2.5g
U7 Lite
Basically the Express would go in the basement as gateway/wifi and the U7 upstairs. I kind of like the Express’ power vs the Ultra, but having to add a mini switch is a tad annoying… and I know its wifi isn’t as powerful as the DR7, thus the expectation to need to fill in upstairs.
I suppose the main question is: would the DR7 serve my needs, and if not, which other system is the better bet? Or something else?
RS2418+ & Noctua NF-A8 FLX… so much better!
The stock fans on the RS2418+ (and presumably most rackmount Synologies) are definitely designed for worst case heat scenarios, and IMHO even in “quiet” mode are insufferably loud. It’s not even just the noise level, as the unpleasant characteristic of the sound.
Anyways, after a bunch of research I chose the Noctua NF-A8 FLX due to its high static pressure performance, and can safely say it’s sooo much quieter, even at full speed, and the noise is now consistent and less annoying. I’ll be keeping an eye on drive temps, but this is located in an open rack in an over-airconditioned basement that’s normally quite cool, so I don’t anticipate any issues.
One catch - the fan caddies would not fit the Noctua fans as the frame is thicker than the stock ones, and I had to whittle down two spots on each to get them to seat properly.
If you’re going to hit me, at least let me return the favor!
I don’t get freaked out by people hitting me, even repeatedly. That’s the game, and if my shields are down then they’re down.
But what irks me is when people routinely hit me, and then always keep their own board blank. It’s not that I’m going to go take your shields down in retaliation. But maybe one day your shields will be down and I’ll get a few hits in too. But if you never let anyone hit you, then why should I keep you as a friend so I keep helping you while you never help me?
Tim Hortons, Peterborough ON, $4.99
Normally I get my TGTG boxes from Lindsay, but was in Peterborough today and decided to give a fairly highly rated store a shot. 4 muffins, 2 bagels, 2 donuts and about 5 timbits. Pretty happy with getting muffins!
New to me RS2418+!
My long-suffering DS1815+ is starting to develop problems beyond the C2000 bug, so I’ve been looking at replacing it… and after checking out the price of a new DS1825+, opted to check Marketplace… and picked up this puppy yesterday for $360.
I already have a rack so that works out… going to add a 10g card, do some fan tweaks, migrate my existing 8x12gb array, and maybe in future upgrade the memory to get past that 108TB limit.
First rack buildout! Got rid of the rat’s nest…
New rack - plus a history of ancient NAS systems…
After moving into my new home, I got a salvage rack but never built it out properly - and have been living with what you see in the first two pics for 2 years. A couple weeks ago I upgraded to 2.5G/2.5G fiber internet and decided my old gigabit equipment would not do.
Enter new gear and finally a finished rack! Now that I have the backbone, next up is upgrading my old AP AC HDs to something faster, and get a NAS with proper 10g. Plus some new 2.5g mini switches for rooms… ugh, does it ever end?
Pretty happy with today’s box. Wanted donuts, got donuts!
