At our place, a weekday off is usually easy enough to work around. A full weekend is harder, especially when it falls on the same people who are already covering the busy shifts.

Do you rotate weekends, use seniority, or go first come, first served?

What rule do you actually use, not the one that sounds best on paper?

Curious about this one. What’s one job in your restaurant or café that you still keep on paper, a whiteboard, or a basic spreadsheet because the software made it more complicated?

Could be prep lists, ordering, staff notes, schedules, closing checks, waste logs—anything.

Sometimes the old way is still faster. What have you tried replacing, only to end up going back to paper?

Every time a holiday comes up, the schedule gets a little messy at our restaurant.

A few people ask for the day off, someone can only work part of the day, and the people who are available are usually the same ones who covered the last holiday too. I’m trying to keep it fair without leaving the shift short or always leaning on the same reliable staff.

How do you handle it at your place? Do you ask for holiday availability weeks ahead, rotate who gets the day off, or just deal with each holiday as it comes?

Curious what actually works for smaller teams.

Not an allergy swap or sauce on the side. I mean the kind of order that makes the kitchen read the ticket twice.

Last night an older gentleman came in. He said he was from PEI, really enjoyed his meal, and told us he'd stop by after we open this morning with a homemade oyster cake he made for us.

It was such a kind gesture, and I want to thank him without making it awkward. I was thinking of giving him a dish on the house when he comes back. Would that be a nice way to thank him, or is that too much? What would you do?

I was comparing these two for a small-business SEO stack and eventually stopped looking at the feature tables.

Using Semrush Pro’s annual rate ($117.33/month equivalent) and Ahrefs Lite at $129/month, keeping both works out to about US$2,956/year before tax.

My current thinking:

- Semrush makes more sense when one person is handling local SEO, content planning, reporting, and some PPC.

- Ahrefs makes more sense when most of the work is competitor research, backlinks, and technical SEO.

I wouldn’t pay for both by default.

GSC, GA4, GBP, and lead data already tell me what happened. A paid tool needs to help me decide what to do next. Otherwise, it is just another dashboard.

For solo operators and small teams, which task actually makes Semrush or Ahrefs worth the monthly cost?

I’m also curious which features looked useful when you subscribed but ended up being ignored.

Have you found a way to reduce it without creating more work for yourself? I'd appreciate any advice, especially from other independent restaurant owners in Canada.
